Abstract

A system to deliver therapeutic energy to a patient, the system including a storage capacitor configured to store and release the therapeutic energy, a boost converter circuit coupled to the storage capacitor, and a current flow control circuit coupled to the boost converter circuit and including a plurality of control circuits configured to control a current output from the current flow control circuit in a therapeutic biphasic voltage waveform upon release of the therapeutic energy from the storage capacitor, wherein the therapeutic biphasic voltage waveform includes a ramped increase in voltage from approximately zero volts to a desired therapeutic voltage level over a time interval greater than 1 millisecond and less than a time associated with a phase switch.

Claims

1. A system to deliver therapeutic energy to a patient, the system comprising:

a storage capacitor configured to store and release the therapeutic energy;

a h-bridge circuit boost converter circuit coupled to the storage capacitor; and

a current flow control circuit coupled to the boost converter circuit and comprising a plurality of control circuits configured to control a current output from the current flow control circuit in a therapeutic biphasic voltage waveform upon release of the therapeutic energy from the storage capacitor,

wherein the therapeutic biphasic voltage waveform comprises a ramped increase in voltage from approximately zero volts to a desired therapeutic voltage level over a time interval greater than 1 millisecond and less than a time associated with a phase switch of the therapeutic biphasic voltage waveform.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the time interval is at least 2 milliseconds.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the time associated with the phase switch is approximately 6 milliseconds.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein a duration of the therapeutic biphasic voltage waveform is approximately 10 milliseconds.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein the desired therapeutic voltage level is based on a patient impedance.

6. The system of claim 5 wherein the desired therapeutic voltage level is 2000 volts and the patient impedance is approximately 200 ohms.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the boost converter circuit comprises:

an inductor,

a current sensing network, coupled to the inductor, to sense a magnitude of current in the inductor,

a switch coupled between the inductor and the current sensing network, and

a comparator configured to compare the magnitude of current in the inductor with a current profile.

8. The system of claim 7 wherein the boost converter circuit comprises a smoothing capacitor set to a value of zero, wherein the smoothing capacitor is coupled to the inductor and the current sensing network.

9. The system of claim 7 wherein the boost converter circuit excludes a smoothing capacitor.

10. The system of claim 7 wherein the comparator comprises an operational amplifier.

11. The system of claim 7 wherein the boost converter circuit is constructed to control a state of the switch based on the comparison.

12. The system of claim 1, wherein the current flow control circuit comprises a plurality of transistors arranged as an H-bridge circuit.

13. The system of claim 12 wherein each control circuit of the plurality of control circuits is configured to control a gate voltage of a respective transistor of the plurality of transistors to linearly control the current output from the current flow control circuit.

14. The system of claim 12 wherein the plurality of transistors comprise one of insulated-gate bipolar transistors, metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors, and silicon-controlled rectifiers.

15. The system of claim 12 wherein the plurality of control circuits is configured to control each transistor of the plurality of transistors such that each transistor provides a voltage controlled current source.

16. The system of claim 1 wherein the plurality of control circuits is configured to linearly control the current output from the current flow control circuit.

17. The system of claim 1 wherein the current flow control circuit is configured to control the therapeutic energy delivered to the patient without providing a current path through dissipation resistors.

18. The system of claim 1 wherein the storage capacitor is a single capacitor.

19. The system of claim 18 wherein the single capacitor has a minimum energy rating of approximately 305 Joules.
