Abstract

The invention concerns a stylus for use with a digitizing tablet. The stylus stores information which identifies characteristics of a user'"'"'s handwriting. These characteristics are transmitted to a computer when the user interfaces with the computer, and are used by the computer to recognize the user'"'"'s handwriting.

Claims

1. In a hand-held stylus which delivers signals to a digitizing tablet, the improvement comprising:

a) stored data which can be used to interpret a user'"'"'s handwriting.

2. In a hand-held stylus which is used to transfer data to a digitizing tablet, the improvement comprising:

a) memory for storing characteristics of a user'"'"'s handwriting; and

b) means for transferring said characteristics to a receiver.

3. For a signature verification system, the improvement comprising:

a) means for parameterizing a signature; and

b) means for loading the parameterized signature into a stylus.

4. A stylus for writing upon a digitizing tablet, comprising:

a) means for producing a position signal to be received by the tablet;

b) memory for storing signature data within the stylus; and

c) telemetry means for transmitting the stored signature data.

5. A signature verification system, comprising:

a) a portable hand-held stylus which contains

i) memory for storing reference data indicative of a user'"'"'s signature; and

ii) transmission means for transmitting the reference data; and

b) a stationary system, for

i) receiving the transmitted reference data,

ii) allowing the user to write a sample signature, and

iii) comparing the reference data with the sample signature.

6. A system according to

, and further comprising:

c) a stationary power source, for delivery of power to the stylus.

7. A system according to

, in which the stationary power source comprises a power cord connectable to the stylus.

, in which the power cord comprises a data channel for delivering the reference data to the digitizing system.

9. A system according to

claim 5

, in which the stylus contains no power source.

10. In a system which detects position of a stylus on a tablet, the improvement comprising the step of:

a) transmitting stored data, indicative of characteristics of human'"'"'s handwriting, from the stylus.

11. A method of loading data into a stylus, which produces a position signal for use by a digitizing tablet, comprising:

a) generating digitized data, based on a word written by the stylus; and

then

b) loading the digitized data into the stylus.

12. A method of storing indicia of a signature, comprising the following steps:

a) using a stylus, drawing the signature;

b) deriving indicia of the signature; and

c) storing the indicia into the stylus.

13. A method of verifying the signature of a user of a communication device, comprising the following steps:

a) transmitting reference data, which describes the user'"'"'s signature, to the communication device from a stylus held by the user;

b) deriving sample data from a signature written by the user; and

c) comparing the reference data with the sample data.
