Abstract

The present invention provides aneurysm occlusion devices 60, 160 formed from a resilient metal fabric and a method for reliably and effectively occluding aneurysms. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, the aneurysm devices include a body portion 80 which is sized to be received within an aneurysm and an anchor 70 which is sized, and may also be preformed into a specific shape, to engage the lumen of a vessel having the aneurysm thereon. The aneurysm occluder 60 may also include a generally tubular central portion 62 extending between the body portion and the anchor, the central portion being sized and shaped to be received within the neck of the aneurysm. The present invention has particular advantages over prior minimally invasive techniques for occluding aneurysms in that it can both fill the aneurysm and occlude or “stent” the neck of the aneurysm in one step. It also minimizes damage to healthy vessel tissue by localizing contact with the interior of the vessel.

Claims

1. An aneurysm occlusion device for occluding an aneurysm in a vessel of a patient'"'"'s body, comprising a bulbous body portion sized to be received within the aneurism and an anchor sized and shaped to engage an interior surface of the vessel'"'"'s wall, the body portion and the anchor being integrally formed of a resilient fabric permitting the occlusion device to be collapsed for deployment and resiliently self-expand to occlude the aneurysm.

2. The aneurysm occlusion device of

claim 1

further comprising a pair of clamps for securing ends of wire strands defining the resilient fabric, one of said clamps being carried by the anchor, the other of said clamps being carried by the body portion.

3. The aneurysm occlusion device of

claim 2

wherein the fabric of the body portion further comprises a recess adjacent a top of the body portion, the recess being sized to receive the clamp carried by the body portion to provide the body portion with an atraumatic surface.

4. The aneurysm occlusion device of

claim 2

wherein the clamp carried by the body portion is enclosed within an interior of the body portion.

5. The aneurysm occlusion device of

claim 1

further comprising a generally tubular central portion disposed between and connecting the body portion and the anchor, the central portion being sized and shaped to be received within a neck of the aneurysm.

6. A method of forming an aneurysm occlusion device comprising the steps of

a) providing a length of a generally tubular fabric formed of a resilient metal and a mold comprising an upper recess and a lower recess;

b) clamping a first end of the length of fabric with a clamp;

c) inverting the fabric to position the clamp within an interior of the length of fabric;

d) clamping a second end of the length of fabric with a second clamp;

e) deforming the fabric to conform to a molding surface of the mold; and

f) heat treating the fabric in contact with the molding surface to substantially set the fabric in its deformed state.

7. The method of

claim 6

wherein the second end is clamped prior to inverting the fabric, the second clamp being generally annular in shape to permit the first clamp to be passed therethrough.
