Abstract

A portable hand-held computer device comprises a base (10) and a hinged support (12A,12B,34) pivotal between a closed position lying against the base, and an open position extending perpendicularly from the base. A microdisplay (16) attached to the distal end of the support provides a virtual display measuring between, for example, 9 inches and 19 inches diagonally. The base unit (10) houses a microcomputer (90), which drives the microdisplay (16), and a mobile telephone unit (92). Controls (42,46) and a touch-sensitive pad (48) for operating the microcomputer (90) are provided on an upper face of the base (10). The touch-sensitive pad (48) may be an overlay upon a second display which is used to display mobile telephone information. Part (34) of the support carries a set of mobile telephone controls (36) for use when the device is closed and the part (34) obscures the microcomputer controls (42,46). The device may be used with a docking station (13) in a vehicle.

Claims

1. A portable personal computer device comprising:

a base unit (10);

an input device (38-48) on the base unit;

a microdisplay unit (16); and

a microcomputer unit (90) for receiving signals from the input device and controlling images displayed by the microdisplay unit.

2. A device according to

claim 1

, further comprising an elongate support (12A,12B,34) pivotally attached to the base unit, the microdisplay unit being mounted upon a distal end portion of the elongate support, the support being pivotal between a closed position alongside the base unit and an open position extending away from the base unit such that, with the base unit held in one hand and the elongate support in the open position, a user may provide input via the input device while viewing an image displayed by the microdisplay unit.

, wherein the input device comprises a touch-sensitive pad (48) for inputting data and commands to the microcomputer unit.

, wherein the base unit houses parts of a wireless access device (92) and a second display unit (26) is provided on said base unit, the second display being viewable when the support is in the closed position.

, wherein the input device comprises a touch-sensitive pad (48) overlying a viewing surface of the second display unit (26).

, further comprising switch means for switching the the touch-sensitive pad (48) and the microdisplay (16) on when the device is opened.

, wherein the switch means is operable automatically in dependence upon opening and closing of the support.

, wherein the support has an opening through which the second display (26) is visible when the support is in the closed position.

, wherein the input device comprises a set of controls (42) for operation of the microcomputer unit, a second set of controls (36) for operation of mobile telephone unit being provided on a part (34) of the support (12A, 12B,34) so as to be accessible alongside the viewing surface of the second display (26) when the support is in the closed position, at least some of the first set of controls being so positioned as to be obscured by the support when the support is in the closed position.

10. In combination, a device according to

) for connecting the device to a docking unit (130) in a vehicle and means for providing data related to vehicle location (132,134,136) and supplying said data to the microcomputer unit (90), the microcomputer unit having software for operation of the combination as a navigational system.

11. A combination according to

, wherein a separate display is provided in the vehicle and connected to the microcomputer unit via the connecting means, and the microcomputer unit is operable to disable said separate display when vehicle speed exceeds a predetermined speed.

13. A computer device according to

claim 1

, having an interface for connection to a global positioning system receiver and software for computing from data supplied by the a current vehicle speed, comparing the current speed with a reference speed, and disabling an in-vehicle display when the current speed exceeds said reference speed.

In combination, a global positioning system receiver installed in a vehicle and connected to a computer, the receiver periodically supplying to the computer data as to the position of the vehicle, the computer having software for computing from the data a current vehicle speed, comparing the current speed with a reference speed, and disabling an in-vehicle display when the current speed exceeds said reference speed.
