1. A device for removal of material from the body, comprising:
- an elongate shaft for insertion into a body, said shaft having a distal end, an expandable channel mechanism on the distal end of said shaft, said expandable channel mechanism having a radially compressed state for insertion into the body and a radially expanded state extending near to the diameter of the material to be removed near the distal end of said shaft where the expandable channel mechanism entraps said material to be removed.

18. A device for removing material from the body, comprising
a support wire having a distal end, an trapping element having a retracted insertion state and an expanded material removal state, said support wire including user operable means for moving said trapping element from said retracted state to said expanded state. expansion of said trapping element when positioned distally of material to be removed.

20. A catheter for use in receiving material from the body into which the catheter is placed, the improvement comprising:
-
a expandable channel mechanism on the distal end of said catheter, said trapping mechanism having a radially retracted insertion state and a radially expanded trapping state. an actuator associated with said trapping element to move said trap from said retracted state to said expanded trapping state, expansion of said expandable channel mechanism when said catheter is inserted into a body passageway assuring that material being removed in a proximal direction from a position in said passageway that is distal of said catheter will enter the lumen of said expandable catheter and will be blocked from the body passageway external of said catheter or to act as a seal for aspiration.

21. A method of removing material from the body, comprising the steps of:
-
inserting a support wire into the body, said wire having a distal end and having an material trapping engaging element supported on said distal end of said wire, said trapping element having a radially compressed state for insertion of said wire into the body, said trapping element in the radially compressed state to pass through or around whatever material is to be engaged, radially expanding said trapping elements to a radially expanded state when said engaging element is positioned distally of said material to be removed and inserting a shaft into the body over said support wire wherein, said shaft is an expandable channel that accepts material to be removed. - View Dependent Claims (22, 23, 24, 25)
