Abstract

A vehicle display unit is designed to be carried by an automotive vehicle. Some such units are designed for mounting on the roof of a car, bus, or other vehicle. Others are designed to be mounted in other locations on or in a vehicle, such as, for example, on the side of a car, truck, or bus. Such a display unit can include components such as an one or more electronic displays; display drive circuitry, which can include a computer; a connection for receiving power from the electrical system of a vehicle; an enclosure around the one or more displays and their drive circuitry which has ventilation openings; and a ventilation fan for moving cooling air through the enclosure. The electronic displays can have 640×480 or greater resolution. Some roof-mounted embodiments have three electronic displays arranged in a triangle, with two displays each visible from the front and one side of the vehicle, and the third display visible from the behind the vehicle. Some roof-mounted embodiments include an enclosure for their display(s) and drive circuitry; one or more roof protectors having a weight distributing surface shaped to fit the curved roof of a vehicle on which they are mounted; and a plurality of mountings supported by the one or more roof protectors for suspending the enclosure in a position spaced above the roof, which mounting includes vibration isolators, for at least partially isolating the enclosure from vibration of the vehicle roof.

Claims

1. A rooftop unit, for being carried on the roof of an automotive vehicle, comprising:

an electronic display having at least 640×

480 pixel resolution;

a computer, having a video interface, for controlling the images shown on said display; and

an electrical connection for receiving power from the electrical system of said vehicle.

2. A rooftop unit as in claim 1 further including a radio connected to said computer for conveying digital information to the computer about which messages it should cause to be shown on said display.

3. A rooftop unit as in claim 2:

further including a GPS device connected to said computer, for providing said computer information about the location of said vehicle; and

wherein said computer is programmed to use said location information, in conjunction with information received over said radio, in determining which messages to show on said display.

4. A rooftop unit as in claim 1:

further including a GPS device connected to said computer, for providing said computer information about the location of said vehicle; and

said computer is programmed to use said location information in determining which messages to show on said display.

5. A rooftop unit as in claim 1 wherein said computer contains programming to generate animated bitmapped images on the display from vector-based animation representations

6. A rooftop unit as in claim 5:

further including a radio connected to said computer for conveying digital data to the computer; and

said computer is programmed to generate said animated images from vector-based animation data received over said radio.

7. A rooftop unit as in claim 5:

further including a memory device; and

wherein said computer includes programming for enabling it to generate said animated image from vector-based animation files stored on said mass storage device.

8. A rooftop unit as in claim 1 further including:

an enclosure in which the display and computer are enclosed;

mountings for suspending said enclosure in a position spaced above the roof of said vehicle, which mounting includes vibration isolators, for at least partially isolating the enclosure from vibration of said vehicle roof.

9. A rooftop unit as in claim 8 wherein said enclosure includes top, side, and bottom external surfaces and is substantially waterproof over said top and sides surfaces, with holes for ventilation in said bottom surface, which is spaced above the vehicle roof for ventilation.

10. A rooftop unit as in claim 9 further including one or more ventilation fans placed near one or more of said ventilation holes.

11. A rooftop unit as in claim 10 further including:

a heat sensor for measuring the temperature inside said enclosure; and

circuitry for controlling the operation of said fans as a function of the temperature measured by said heat sensor.

12. A rooftop unit as in claim 9 wherein a portion of the external surfaces of said enclosure extends down below the portion of bottom surface containing said ventilation holes on at least substantially three sides, to reduce the tendency of rain water to enter said ventilation holes

13. A rooftop unit as in claim 9:

further including a radio connected to said computer for conveying digital information to the computer about which messages it should cause to be shown on said display; and

wherein said radio is also enclosed in said enclosure.

14. A rooftop unit as in claim 13:

further including a geographical location system connected to said computer, for providing said computer information about the location of said vehicle; and

wherein;

said computer is programmed to use said location information, in conjunction with information received over said radio, in determining which messages to show on said display; and

said geographical location system is also enclosed in said enclosure.

15. A rooftop unit as in claim 1:

further including a connection for receiving an input from an emergency switch that can be operated by an occupant of the vehicle;

wherein said computer contains programming to cause it to respond to operation of said emergency switch by causing a predefined emergency message to be shown on said display.

16. A rooftop unit as in claim 15

further including a radio connected to said computer for conveying digital information to the computer about which messages it should cause to be shown on said display and for communicating information from said computer to a remote electronic system;

and

said computer further contains programming to cause it to respond to operation of said emergency switch by causing a predefined emergency message to be sent by said radio to said remote electronic system.

17. A vehicle display unit, for being carried on an automotive vehicle, comprising:

an electronic display;

display drive circuitry for controlling the images shown on said display;

an electrical connection for receiving power from the electrical system of said vehicle;

an enclosure around said display and said drive circuitry having ventilation openings; and

a ventilation fan located near one of said ventilation openings for moving cooling air through said enclosure.

18. A vehicle display unit as in claim 17 further including:

a heat sensor for measuring the temperature inside said enclosure; and

circuitry for controlling the operation of said fan as a function of the temperature measured by said heat sensor.

19. A vehicle display unit as in claim 17 wherein:

said display includes a top, a front side, which is the display surface on which displayed information is to be viewed, and a back side facing in the opposite direction from said front side;

said enclosure includes a cover over both the top and the front and back sides of the display; and

one or more fans are positioned to move air in said enclosure up one of said sides, across said top, and down the opposite side.

20. A vehicle display unit as in claim 19 wherein a cross-flow fan is used to propel air up one side of said display.

A vehicle display unit as in claim 19 wherein said enclosure includes a transparent surface that extends over and is generally parallel to said display surface, to enable images generated by said display to be viewed from outside said enclosure, said transparent surface having a mat finish to reduce glare.

22. A vehicle display unit as in claim 19 wherein:

said enclosure includes top, side, and bottom external surfaces and is substantially waterproof over said top and sides surfaces, with holes for ventilation in said bottom surface; and

one or more ventilation fans are placed near one or more of said ventilation holes.

23. A vehicle display unit as in claim 22:

wherein one of said fans is positioned to suck air into one of said ventilation holes in the bottom of said enclosure; and

further including a filter positioned to filter water and dirt out of the air sucked in by said fan before it reaches said fan.

24. A vehicle display unit as in claim 22

wherein one of said fans is positioned to suck air in one of said ventilation holes in the bottom of said enclosure;

and

further including an air verticalizing grating shaped to verticalize air flow in the vertical direction located over said ventilation hole to increase the verticality of air sucked up into said hole, so as to reduce the amount of rain which will enter said ventilation hole.

25. A vehicle display unit as in claim 22 wherein a portion of the external surfaces of said enclosure extends down below the portion of bottom surface containing said ventilation holes on at least substantially three sides, to reduce the tendency of rain water to enter said ventilation holes

26. A vehicle display unit as in claim 17 further including:

a heater positioned to heat the interior of said enclosure;

a heat sensor for measuring the temperature inside said enclosure; and

circuitry for controlling the operation of said heater as a function of the temperature measured by said heat sensor.

27. A rooftop unit, for being carried on the roof of an automotive vehicle, comprising:

three electronic displays;

display drive circuitry for driving images on each such display;

wherein;

said three displays are arranged in a triangle having a first corner near the front of the rooftop unit, and two corners nearer the back of the rooftop unit;

two of said displays are side displays, which form the sides of the triangle which join at said front corner, each of which is position to be visible from the front and one side of the vehicle; and

a third of the displays is a back display, which forms the third side of the triangle and is positioned to be visible from the behind the vehicle.

28. A rooftop unit as in claim 27 wherein said drive circuitry is capable of driving different images on said side displays than are driven on said back display.

29. A rooftop unit as in claim 28 wherein said drive circuitry is capable of driving both side displays with the same video output.

30. A rooftop unit, for being carried on the roof of an automotive vehicle, comprising:

an electronic display;

display drive circuitry for driving images on said display;

an enclosure in which said display and drive circuitry are enclosed;

one or more roof protectors having a total of over two square feet of weight distributing surface shaped to fit the three dimensional curved surface of the roof of a vehicle on which said rooftop unit it is to be mounted;

a plurality of mountings supported by said one or more roof protectors for suspending said enclosure in a position spaced above said roof, which mounting includes vibration isolators, for at least partially isolating the enclosure from vibration of said vehicle roof.

31. A rooftop unit as in claim 30 wherein:

said mountings include a plurality of rigid mounting elements including shafts extending upward from said roof protectors and rigid mounting surfaces above and below said shaft;

said enclosure includes a mounting hole for receiving each shaft; and

said vibration isolators include elastic material placed around each shaft below, above, and in each such mounting hole, so that said enclosure has elastic material to isolated it from said rigid mounting elements in each of three dimensions.
