Abstract

A system and method for generating a gas-supersaturated fluid and delivering the fluid at high delivery pressures to thereby prevent bubble nucleation is disclosed. The system comprises a housing for containing a removable fluid assembly for housing a fluid to be gas-supersaturated and a drive assembly for delivering the fluid to a delivery site. The housing assembly comprises a cylinder and a piston which may be advanced along the inner surface of the cylinder to pressurize and to deliver the fluid. To generate a gas-supersaturated fluid, the housing assembly is removed from the system housing, filled with a fluid, and gas is introduced at or slightly above the desired gas partial pressure into the cylinder. To deliver the gas-supersaturated fluid, the fluid assembly is returned to the system housing and the drive assembly advances the piston to increase the hydrostatic pressure to the desired delivery pressure and, after opening a valve, to deliver the gas-supersaturated fluid at the desired high delivery pressure to a delivery site.

Claims

1. A apparatus for generating or delivering a gas-supersaturated fluid to a delivery site, comprising:

a fluid assembly comprising a cylinder for containing fluid and gas and a piston adapted to travel within said cylinder for pressurizing contents of said cylinder and for delivering the gas-supersaturated fluid at predetermined fluid delivery pressures, said cylinder having one or more ports for input and output of fluid and gas;

a drive assembly comprising a piston pusher for advancing said piston within the cylinder and a drive system for advancing said piston pusher;

a system housing for housing the fluid assembly and the drive assembly;

wherein the fluid assembly is removable from the system housing for said generating of the gas-supersaturated fluid.

The apparatus according to claim 1, said fluid assembly further comprises a disposable fluid container within said cylinder for containing said fluid and gas, said disposable fluid container having one or more ports in fluid and gaseous communication with the one or more ports of said cylinder for input and output of fluid and gas.

3. The apparatus according to claim 2, said disposable fluid container having fold lines such that when compressed by the piston, said disposable fluid container collapses in a predetermined manner.

The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said drive assembly further comprises a ball screw rotated by said drive system, wherein rotation of said ball screw in a first direction advances the piston pusher toward said fluid assembly and rotation in a second direction advances the piston pusher away said fluid assembly.

The apparatus according to claim 4, wherein said drive assembly further comprises a first bearing and a second bearing supporting said ball screw wherein said first bearing is located near an end of the ball screw between said piston pusher and said drive system and said second bearing is located at an opposite end of the ball screw.

The apparatus according to claim 5, wherein said piston pusher comprises an engagement portion which engages said ball screw and a split portion which contacts the piston to advance said piston, said split portion comprising at least two sections extending from said engagement portion to allow said split portion of the piston pusher to travel past said second bearing.

The apparatus according to claim 6, wherein said drive assembly further comprises a piston pusher anti-rotation plate fixably attached to said system housing, said anti-rotation plate having at least two apertures adapted for receiving said at least two sections of the split portion of the piston pusher, wherein said anti-rotation plate prevents rotation of said piston pusher such that rotation of ball screw advances said piston pusher.

The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said fluid assembly includes a manifold which comprises a flow-flush valve in fluid communication with said cylinder port and having an output for connection to a system delivery apparatus for delivering the fluid to the delivery site, said valve having a first position for providing fluid flow from the cylinder to the delivery site, a second position for providing a low-velocity flow of a flush fluid from a flush fluid source and a closed position for preventing fluid flow from said system.

9. The apparatus according to claim 8, wherein said manifold includes a rupture disc in fluid communication with said cylinder port, said rupture disc adapted to rupture when fluid pressure of said fluid exceeds a predetermined safety pressure thereby terminating fluid flow from said system.

10. An apparatus for generation and delivery of a gas-supersaturated fluid, comprising:

a power screw having first and second ends supported by bearings;

a piston pusher travelling on the power screw in response to rotation thereof, said piston pusher comprising a collar portion engaging the power screw and at least two depending portions extending from the collar portion along the power screw;

a support plate adjacent one end of the power screw to support a bearing and said one end of the power screw, said support plate defining at least to apertures to permit said depending portions of the piston pusher to pass therethrough;

a fluid receiving cylinder disposed on an opposite side of the support plate from the power screw; and

a piston sealingly and slidably received in the cylinder and acted on by the depending portions of the piston pusher to pressurize fluid received in said cylinder.

11. The apparatus according to claim 10, wherein said power screw and support plate are mounted in a housing and said piston and cylinder are removably receivable in said housing to be acted on by said piston pusher.

The apparatus of claim 12, wherein said fluid assembly further comprises a fluid container removable from said cylinder for containing fluid and gas, said fluid container having one or more ports in fluid and gaseous communication with the one or more ports of said cylinder for input and output of fluid and gas.

14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein said fluid container is made of a flexible material comprising fold lines.

15. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein said fluid container is made of a rigid material and wherein said piston is adapted to travel within said fluid container.

16. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein said drive mechanism comprises a screw for advancing said piston pusher, said screw having two ends, each end supported by a bearing.

17. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein said piston pusher comprises a coupling for engaging with said screw and a split portion comprising at least two sections disposed around one of said bearings such that the pusher may pass beyond the bearing, said split portion engaging with said piston.

18. The apparatus of claim 17, further comprising a split portion plate comprising at least two orifices adapted to receive said at least two sections of the split portion for preventing rotation of said piston pusher.

19. The apparatus according to claim 12, wherein said cylinder further comprises at least one thermistor for monitoring temperature of fluid and gas in the cylinder.

20. The apparatus according to claim 12, wherein said cylinder further comprises at least one pressure gauge in fluid and gaseous communication with fluid and gas in the cylinder for monitoring pressure of the fluid and gas in the cylinder.

The method according to claim 20, further comprising the step of providing a disposable fluid container for containing said fluid and gas within said cylinder, said disposable fluid container having one or more ports in fluid and gaseous communication with the one or more ports of said cylinder for input and output of fluid and gas.

23. The method according to claim 22, said disposable fluid container having premolded fold lines such that when compressed by said piston, said disposable fluid container collapses in a predetermined manner.

25. The method according to claim 24, wherein said step of advancing said piston pusher further comprises the step of providing said piston pusher with an engagement portion for engaging with said ball screw and a split portion extending from said engagement portion for engaging with said piston to advance said piston, said split portion comprising at least two sections to allow said split portion of the piston pusher to travel past said second bearing.

29. The method according to claim 28, wherein said filling step, after advancing the piston step, further comprises the additional step of introducing additional fluid to increase the hydrostatic pressure of said fluid.

12. An apparatus for generation and delivery of a gas-supersaturated fluid, comprising:

a support structure;

a drive mechanism supported by the support structure for advancing a piston pusher; and

a fluid assembly mounted on the support structure comprising a cylinder and a piston disposed therein and adapted to travel within said cylinder, said cylinder having one or more ports for input and output of fluid and gas, said piston in cooperation with the piston pusher for advancement of said piston, wherein said fluid assembly is removable from the support structure in order to charge said cylinder with fluid and gas to create the gas-supersaturated fluid.

21. A method for generating and delivering a gas supersaturated fluid to a delivery site, comprising the steps of:

providing a fluid assembly comprising a cylinder, a piston adapted to travel within said cylinder and one or more ports for input and output of fluid and gas;

filling said cylinder with a fluid and introducing a gas under pressure to thereby gas-supersaturate said fluid;

placing said fluid assembly in a system housing containing a drive mechanism assembly, said drive mechanism comprising a piston pusher adapted to advance said piston within said cylinder;

advancing said piston pusher until hydrostatic pressure of the gas-supersaturated fluid in said cylinder is at a desired predetermined delivery pressure;

selecting a flow position of a flow-flush valve for delivery of the gas-supersaturated fluid from said system to the delivery site, said valve being in fluid communication with said cylinder port; and

advancing said piston pusher at a predetermined rate to deliver the gas-supersaturated fluid at said desired predetermined delivery pressure.

24. The method according to claim 21, wherein said step of advancing said piston pusher comprises the steps of:

providing a ball screw rotated by said drive system, wherein rotation of said ball screw in a first direction advances the piston pusher toward the fluid assembly and rotation of said ball screw in a second direction advances the piston pusher away the fluid assembly; and

providing said drive mechanism assembly with a first and a second bearing for supporting said ball screw and for ensuring concentric and low frictional rotation of said ball screw, wherein said first bearing is located between the piston pusher and the drive system and said second bearing is located between the drive system and the removable fluid assembly.

The method according to claim 21, further comprising the step of providing a piston pusher anti-rotation plate fixably attached to the system housing, said anti-rotation plate having at least two apertures adapted for receiving the at least two sections of the split portion of the piston pusher, wherein said anti-rotation plate prevents rotation of the piston pusher such that rotation of the ball screw advances the piston pusher.

27. The method according to claim 21, further comprising the steps of:

monitoring and controlling temperature, pressure and fluid flow velocity of the fluid from said cylinder; and

providing a rupture disc, wherein said disc ruptures when pressure of the fluid exceeds a predetermined safety pressure to thereby terminate fluid flow from said system to the delivery site.

28. The method according to claim 21, wherein said filling step comprises the additional steps of:

providing a small volume of gas within said cylinder to facilitate gas-supersaturation of said fluid;

advancing the piston to remove said small volume of gas after gas-supersaturating said fluid; and

attaching a piston cap to said fluid assembly to retain said piston within said cylinder.

30. A method for delivering a gas-supersaturated fluid to a delivery site, comprising the steps of:

providing a fluid assembly comprising a cylinder containing the gas-supersaturated fluid, a piston adapted to travel within said cylinder and one or more ports for input and output of fluid and gas;

placing said fluid assembly in a system housing containing a drive mechanism assembly, said drive mechanism comprising a piston pusher adapted to advance said piston within said cylinder;

advancing said piston pusher until hydrostatic pressure of the gas-supersaturated fluid in said cylinder is at a desired predetermined delivery pressure;

selecting a flow position of a flow-flush valve for delivery of the gas-supersaturated fluid from said system to the delivery site, said valve being in fluid communication with said cylinder port; and

advancing said piston pusher at a predetermined rate to deliver the gas-supersaturated fluid at said desired predetermined delivery pressure.
