Abstract

A system and method for providing access to a server by a wireless computing device is described. A server and a wireless computing device and a communications link between the wireless computing device and the server are provided. The wireless computing device includes a hardware component including a processor and a memory. The server generates instructions and converted data based on data requested by the wireless computing device. The wireless computing device also includes an identification module. The identification module can provide identification data to the server.

Claims

1. A server system comprising:

a processor;

a memory for storing instructions which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to;

forward a request for data on behalf of a wireless computing device;

receive said data on behalf of the wireless computing device;

convert the requested data to a format which the wireless computing device can interpret to produce converted data; and

transmit the converted data to the wireless computing device;

a wireless link between the server and the wireless computing device and wherein the wireless computing device includes an identification module.

2. The server system as recited in claim 1, wherein the wireless link includes a Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) compliant wireless link.

3. The server system as recited in claim 2, wherein the GSM system provides user identification data to the server.

4. The server system as recited in claim 2, wherein the identification module includes a subscriber identification module (SIM).

5. The server system as recited in claim 4, wherein wireless computing device transmits SIM data from the SIM and wherein the memory further includes instructions that cause the processor to:

receive the SIM data;

validate the SIM data; and

provide converted data to the wireless computing device if the SIM data is valid.

6. The server system as recited in claim 1, wherein the server identifies the wireless computing device by the identification data from the identification module.

7. The server system as recited in claim 1, wherein wireless computing device transmits identification data from the identification module and wherein the memory further includes instructions that cause the processor to:

receive the identification data;

validate the identification data; and

provide converted data to the wireless computing device if the identification data is valid.

8. The server system as recited in claim 1, wherein the identification module is removable from the wireless computing device and wherein the identification module can be installed in a second wireless computing device and wherein the second wireless computing device transmits identification data from the identification module and wherein the memory further includes instructions that cause the processor to:

receive the identification data;

validate the identification data; and

provide converted data to the second wireless computing device if the identification data is valid.

9. The server system as recited in claim 1, wherein the forwarded request for data on behalf of a wireless computing device includes data from an Internet site.

10. A method for providing access to a server by a wireless computing device comprising:

providing a server;

providing a wireless computing device including;

a hardware component comprised of a processor and a memory;

an interpreter module for interpreting instructions and converted data transmitted from a server, the instructions and converted data generated by the server based on data requested by the wireless computing device; and

an identification module; and

providing a communications link between the server and the wireless computing device.

11. The method as recited in claim 10, wherein the server identifies the wireless computing device from identification data from the identification module.

12. The method as recited in claim 10, further comprising:

transmitting identification data from the identification module;

receiving the identification data in the server;

validating the identification data; and

providing the data from the server to the wireless computing device if the identification data is valid.

13. The method as recited in claim 10, wherein the wireless link includes a Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) compliant wireless link.

14. The method as recited in claim 13, wherein the identification module includes a subscriber identification module (SIM).

15. The method as recited in claim 13, wherein the GSM system includes an identification data link to the server wherein the GSM provides user identification data to the portal.

17. The wireless computing device as recited in claim 16, wherein the radio includes a GSM radio and wherein the identification module includes a subscriber identification module (SIM).

18. The wireless computing device as recited in claim 16, wherein identification data derived from the identification module identifies the wireless computing device user to the server.

16. A wireless computing device comprising:

a hardware component comprised of a processor and a memory;

an interpreter module for interpreting instructions and data transmitted from a server, the instructions and data generated by the server based on data requested by the wireless computing device; and

a radio, wherein the radio includes an identification module.
