Abstract

A network assembly and associated method for assigning an identification code to an electronic file includes a reference repository, an indexing unit linked with the reference repository, and an editing unit linked with the reference repository and the indexing unit. The reference repository receives the electronic file from a communications network, such as the Internet, and stores characteristic information associated with the electronic file. The indexing unit assigns and stores an identification code with respect to the characteristic information. The editing unit inserts the identification code to the electronic file in a format suitable for the electronic file. The network assembly further includes a review unit linked with the editing unit for reviewing the inserted identification code before dispatching the electronic file from the network assembly.

Claims

1. A network assembly for assigning an identification code to an electronic file from a communications network, comprising:

(a) a reference repository;

(b) an indexing unit linked with the reference repository; and

(c) an editing unit linked with the reference repository and the indexing unit.

2. The network assembly according to claim 1 wherein the reference repository receives the electronic file from the communications network.

3. The network assembly according to claim 1 wherein the communications network comprises the Internet.

4. The network assembly according to claim 1 wherein the electronic file comprises published material.

5. The network assembly according to claim 1 wherein the reference repository stores characteristic information associated with the electronic file.

6. The network assembly according to claim 1 wherein the indexing unit assigns an identification code to the electronic file.

7. The network assembly according to claim 1 wherein the indexing unit assigns the identification code to the electronic file with respect to the characteristic information.

8. The network assembly according to claim 7 wherein the indexing unit stores the identification code with respect to the characteristic information.

9. The network assembly according to claim 7 wherein the identification code comprises a library specific identification code.

10. The network assembly according to claim 7 wherein the editing unit inserts the identification code to the electronic file.

11. The network assembly according to claim 10 wherein the editing unit formats the identification code with respect to the electronic file.

12. The network assembly according to claim 1 further comprising a review unit linked with the indexing unit.

13. The network assembly according to claim 12 wherein the review unit dispatches the formatted electronic file from the network assembly.

14. The network assembly according to claim 12 wherein the review unit dispatches the formatted electronic file to a book on demand machine.

16. The computer program code according to claim 15 wherein the second computer program code stores the identification code with respect to the characteristic information.

17. The computer program code according to claim 15 wherein the third computer program code formats the identification code with respect to the electronic file.

18. The computer program code according to claim 15 further comprising a fourth computer program code linked with the second computer program code for forwarding the formatted electronic file.

19. The computer program code according to claim 18 wherein the fourth computer program code dispatches the formatted electronic file to a book on demand machine.

15. Computer program code on a computer readable media for assigning an identification code to an electronic file, comprising:

(a) a first computer program code for storing characteristic information associated with the electronic file;

(b) a second computer program code linked with the first computer program code for assigning an identification code to the electronic file with respect to the characteristic information; and

(c) a third computer program code linked with the first and the second computer program codes for inserting the identification code to the electronic file.

20. In a communications network environment, a method for assigning an identification code to an electronic file, comprising the steps of:

(a) storing characteristic information associated with the electronic file;

(b) assigning an identification code to the electronic file with respect to the characteristic information; and

(c) inserting the identification code to the electronic file.
