Abstract

A cellular system utilizes transmission diversity by transmitting a plurality time slotted signals for communicating data. A transmitting station including a transmitter configured to transmit a plurality of data signals corresponding to the data in different time slots. The time slot occurring at different times so that transmitted data signals are not simultaneously transmitted. A receiving station includes a receiver for sequentially receiving the data signals and a combiner for reconstructing the data from the received data signals. Preferably, the transmitting station has a plurality of spaced apart antennas from which the respective data signals are transmitted. Preferably, the system is a CDMA system where the data signals are transmitted from the transmitting station as a plurality of PN spread spectrum signals which are formed by spreading and modulating the data with different PN codes. The receiving station then reconstructs the data by first despreading and demodulating the received data signals. The receiving station may be configured to measure the respective time of arrival of the transmitted data signals and compute its location from said respective measured time of arrival of the data signals. The transmitting station may be a combined base station and transfer station.

Claims

1. In a cellular system that utilizes transmission diversity by transmitting a plurality of time slotted data signals, a method for communicating data from a transmitting station to a receiving station comprising:

transmitting a first data signal corresponding to the data from the transmitting station is in a first time slot;

transmitting a second data signal corresponding to the data from the transmitting station is in a second time slot, said second time slot occurring after said first time slot wherein said first and second time slots are selected so that said first transmitted data signal and said second transmitted data signal are not simultaneously transmitted;

receiving said first and second data signals at said receiving station; and

reconstructing the data from the received first and second data signals.

2. A method in accordance with claim 1, wherein the transmitting said first data signal from the transmitting station is from a first antenna and the transmitting said second data signal from the transmitting station is from a second antenna spaced apart from said first antenna.

3. A method in accordance with claim 2, wherein said transmitting station is a combined base station and transfer station.

4. A method for a CDMA system in accordance with claim 1, wherein the transmitting said data signals from the transmitting station is by transmitting a plurality of time slotted PN spread spectrum signals.

A method in accordance with claim 4, wherein the transmitting said first data signal from the transmitting station in a first time slot includes spreading and modulating the data with a first PN code to form the first data signal as a PN spread spectrum modulated data signal and the transmitting said second data signal from the transmitting station in a second time slot includes spreading and modulating the data with a second PN code which is different than said first PN code to form the second data signal as a PN spread spectrum modulated data signal and reconstructing the data includes despreading and demodulating the received first and second data signals.

6. A method in accordance with claim 5, wherein the transmitting said first data signal from the transmitting station is from a first antenna and the transmitting said second signal from the transmitting station is from a second antenna spaced apart from said first antenna.

7. A method in accordance with claim 6, further comprising:

spreading and modulating the data with a third PN code which is different than said first and second PN codes to form a third data signal as a PN spread spectrum modulated data signal;

transmitting said third data signal from the transmitting station in a third time slot different from said first and second time slots from a third antenna spaced apart from said first and second antennas;

receiving said third data signal at said receiving station;

despreading and demodulating the received third data signal; and

reconstructing the data from the received first, second and third data signals after despreading and demodulating.

8. A method in accordance with claim 7, further comprising:

measuring the respective time of arrival of said first, second and third transmitted data signals at said receiving station; and

computing the location of said receiving station from said respective measured time of arrival of said first, second and third transmitted data signals.

9. A method in accordance with claim 8, wherein the despreading and demodulating discriminates against all other PN spread spectrum modulated data signals.

10. A method in accordance with claim 7, wherein said first, second and third PN codes are part of a PN code sequence produced by a PN code generator without resetting.

11. A method in accordance with claim 5, wherein said first and second PN codes are part of a PN code sequence produced by a PN code generator without resetting.

12. A method in accordance with claim 1, further comprising:

transmitting a third data signal corresponding to the data from the transmitting station in a third time slot different from said first and second time slots;

receiving said third data signal at said receiving station; and

reconstructing the data from the received first, second and third data signals.

A method in accordance with claim 12, wherein the transmitting said first data signal from the transmitting station is from a first antenna, the transmitting said second data signal from the transmitting station is from a second antenna spaced apart from said first antenna and the transmitting said third data signal from the transmitting station is from a third antenna spaced apart from said first and second antennas.

14. A method in accordance with claim 13, further comprising:

measuring the respective time of arrival of said first, second and third transmitted data signals at said receiving station; and

computing the location of said receiving station from said respective measured time of arrival of said first, second and third transmitted data signals.

15. A method in accordance with claim 14, wherein said transmitting station is a combined base station and transfer station.

16. A cellular system that utilizes transmission diversity by transmitting a plurality time slotted signals for communicating data comprising:

a transmitting station including a transmitter configured to transmit a first data signal corresponding to the data in a first time slot and to transmit a second data signal corresponding to the data in a second time slot, said second time slot occurring after said first time slot wherein said first and second time slots are selected so that said first transmitted data signal and said second transmitted data signal are not simultaneously transmitted; and

a receiving station including;

a receiver for sequentially receiving said first and second data signals; and

a combiner for reconstructing the data from the received data signals.
