Method and system for providing animal health histories and tracking inventory of related drug usage
First Claim
1. A system for providing health histories of animals, comprising:
- computer means for recording the identity of each animal observed and treatment data associated with the animal;
indicia means associated with each animal for identifying the animal; and
data entry means for identifying the animal from the indicia means and for communicating to said computer means the identity of the animal and treatment data associated with the animal at the time of each observation, the computer means adapted to collect treatment data from each observation to produce an accumulation of data associated with each animal, said data accumulation comprising the health history of the animal.

Abstract
A computer-based system for providing up-to-date health histories of animals, for example, in a feedlot. The system includes indicia means associated with each animal for identifying the animal and data entry means coupled to a computer for reading the indicia means to identify the animal to the computer. The data entry means also communicates to the computer treatment data comprising the animal'"'"'s physical condition and any treatment administered to the animal. The computer is programmed to record the identity and associated treatment data and collect the data with previous data to provide the animal'"'"'s health history. The system also displays the identified animal'"'"'s prior health history at the animal'"'"'s location for the operator'"'"'s benefit, which location is typically an animal hospital remote from the computer'"'"'s location. The system may include a second data entry means for determining the net amount of drugs taken for animal treatment from an inventory. The computer is programmed to compare the net amount taken against the amount administered in treatment as communicated by the first data entry means to determine a difference in the amounts.

12. A system for providing health histories of animals, comprising:
-
computer means for recording the identity of each animal and treatment data associated with the animal, said data including the physical condition of the animal and treatment administered to the animal;
indicia means associated with each animal for identifying the animal;
menu means for providing a plurality of optical characters corresponding to possible conditions of the animal and to treatments to be administered to the animal;
an optical character reader for scanning the indicia means of an animal to identify the animal to the computer means and for scanning selectively optical characters of the menu means to communicate to the computer means the physical condition of the animal and the treatment administered; and
display means coupled to the computer means for displaying at the animal'"'"'s location the prior health history of the identified animal.

13. A system for tracking over a predetermined time usage of drugs in the treatment of animals, comprising:
-
computer means for recording an inventory of drugs to be used in the treatment of animals, such recording including the identity and the amount of each drug in the inventory;
first data entry means for communicating to the computer means the identity and amount of each drug used each time an animal is treated; and
second data entry means for communicating to the computer means the identity and amount of each drug removed from and restocked in the inventory, the computer means adapted to compare the net amount of each drug taken from the inventory as communicated by the second data entry means against the amount of each drug used in treatment as communicated by the first data entry means to track the usage of such drugs and the difference in the amounts.

17. A method of providing the health history of an animal, comprising:
-
providing a data terminal at the location of the animal;
identifying the animal to the data terminal; and
displaying at the animal'"'"'s location the prior health history of the animal in response to its identification.

24. A method of providing a health history of an animal, comprising:
-
providing a data terminal at the location of the animal;
electronically identifying the animal to the terminal;
displaying at the animal'"'"'s location the prior health history of the animal;
entering treatment data comprising a drug treatment to be administered to the animal; and
accumulating the treatment data with previously entered data to update the health history of the animal.
