Abstract

A system for sensing the position of a vehicle foot pedal (1), comprises a non-contact sensor (8) associated with a displaceable element (2, 7) of the pedal (1).

Another aspect of the invention is directed to a control system for a motor vehicle, having a driver operable clutch pedal (1), characterised in that a non-contact sensor (8) is associated with an actuating element (2, 7) of the clutch pedal (1), with an electronic control circuit receiving positional information from the sensor (8) in order to effect automatic release of the vehicle'"'"'s parking brake upon a predetermined position of the clutch pedal (1) being attained.

The invention also includes a motor vehicle provided with the sensing system and/or the control system.

Claims

1. A system for sensing the position of a vehicle foot pedal, comprising a non-contact sensor associated with a displaceable element of said pedal.

2. A system as claimed in claim 1, wherein said pedal is a clutch pedal.

3. A system as claimed in claim 1, wherein said pedal is a brake pedal.

4. A system as claimed in claim 1, wherein said pedal is an accelerator pedal.

5. A system as claimed in claim 1, wherein the non-contact sensor is a linear variable differential sensor (LVDT).

6. A system as claimed in claim 1, wherein the non-contact sensor is a Hall effect sensor

7. A system as claimed in claim 1, wherein the non-contact sensor is an inductive distance sensor.

8. A system as claimed in claim 1, wherein said displaceable element of said pedal is a linearly displaceable element.

9. A system as claimed in claim 8, wherein said displaceable element is a main actuating control element of said pedal.

10. A system as claimed in claim 9, wherein said main actuating control element is a clutch master cylinder, thereby permitting measurement of the position of said pedal direct in line with said master cylinder.

11. A system as claimed in claim 5, wherein

(i) an electronic control circuit provides a suitable electrical waveform to drive the LVDT;

(ii) the output signal from the LVDT (phase and/or amplitude) is then conditioned by amplification and/or buffering circuitry;

(iii) the output of this amplification and/or buffering circuitry is then either output as an analogue voltage representing the position of the foot-pedal or is further conditioned and output digitally; and

(iv) this analogue voltage, or digital output signal is then used to control actuators to provide relevant real-time control.

12. A system as claimed in claim 11, wherein said analogue voltage, or digital output signal is also used to provide instrumentation information to the driver of a vehicle (for example as a warning tone or visual display).

14. A control system as claimed in claim 13, wherein said non-contact sensor is a linear variable differential sensor (LVDT).

15. A control system as claimed in claim 13, wherein said non-contact sensor is a Hall effect sensor.

16. A control system as claimed in claim 13, wherein said non-contact sensor is an inductive distance sensor.

17. A control system as claimed in claim 14, wherein:

(i) an electronic control circuit provides a suitable electrical waveform to drive said LVDT;

(ii) the output signal fromsaid LVDT (phase and/or amplitude) is then conditioned by amplification and/or buffering circuitry;

(iii) the output of this buffering circuitry is then either output as an analogue voltage representing the position of the foot-pedal or is further conditioned and output digitally; and

(iv) this analogue voltage, or digital output signal is then used to control actuators to provide relevant real-time control.

18. A control system as claimed in claim 17, wherein said analogue voltage, or digital output signal is also used to provide instrumentation information to the driver of a vehicle (for example as a warning tone or visual display).

A control system for a motor vehicle, having a parking brake and a driver operable clutch pedal, wherein a non-contact sensor is associated with an actuating element of the clutch pedal, and an electronic control circuit receives positional information from said sensor in order to effect automatic release of said parking brake upon a predetermined position of said clutch pedal being attained.

19. A motor vehicle provided with a sensing system comprising a non-contact sensor associated with a displaceable element of said pedal.

20. A motor vehicle provided with a control system wherein a non-contact sensor is associated with an actuating element of the clutch pedal, and an electronic control circuit receives positional information from said sensor in order to effect automatic release of said parking brake upon a predetermined position of said clutch pedal being attained.
