Abstract

An electromagnetic immune tissue invasive system includes a primary device housing. The primary device housing having a control circuit therein. A shielding is formed around the primary device housing to shield the primary device housing and any circuits therein from electromagnetic interference. A lead system transmits and receives signals between the primary device housing. The lead system is either a fiber optic system or an electrically shielded electrical lead system.

Claims

1. A cardiac assist system, comprising:

a primary device housing;

said primary device housing having a control circuit therein;

a lead system to transmit and receive signals between a heart and said primary device housing;

a shielding formed around said lead system to shield said lead system from electromagnetic interference; and

a biocompatible material formed around said shielding.

2. The cardiac assist system as claimed in claim 1, wherein said shielding is a metallic sheath to shield said lead system from electromagnetic interference.

3. The cardiac assist system as claimed in claim 1, wherein said shielding is a carbon composite sheath to shield said lead system from electromagnetic interference.

4. The cardiac assist system as claimed in claim 1, wherein said shielding is a polymer composite sheath to shield said lead system from electromagnetic interference.

5. The cardiac assist system as claimed in claim 1, wherein said biocompatible material is a non-permeable diffusion resistant biocompatible material.

6. A cardiac assist system, comprising:

a primary device housing;

said primary device housing having a control circuit therein;

a fiber optic EMI-immune lead system to transmit and receive signals between a heart and said primary device housing; and

a biocompatible material formed around said fiber optic EMI-immune lead system.

7. The cardiac assist system as claimed in claim 6, wherein said fiber optic EMI-immune system comprises a fiber optic based communication system.

8. The cardiac assist system as claimed in claim 7, wherein said fiber optic communication system contains at least one channel within a multi-fiber optic bundle.

9. The cardiac assist system as claimed in claim 6, wherein said biocompatible material is a non-permeable diffusion resistant biocompatible material.

10. The cardiac assist system as claimed in claim 7, wherein said biocompatible material is a non-permeable diffusion resistant biocompatible material.

11. A cardiac assist system, comprising:

a primary device housing;

said primary device housing having a control circuit therein;

an optical-electrical lead system to transmit and receive signals between a heart and said primary device housing;

a shielding formed around said optical-electrical lead system to shield said optical-electrical lead system from electromagnetic interference; and

a biocompatible material formed around said shielding.

12. The cardiac assist system as claimed in claim 11, wherein said shielding is a metallic sheath to shield said optical-electrical lead system from electromagnetic interference.

13. The cardiac assist system as claimed in claim 11, wherein said shielding is a carbon composite sheath to shield said optical-electrical lead system from electromagnetic interference.

14. The cardiac assist system as claimed in claim 11, wherein said shielding is a polymer composite sheath to shield said optical-electrical lead system from electromagnetic interference.

15. The cardiac assist system as claimed in claim 11, wherein said biocompatible material is a non-permeable diffusion resistant biocompatible material.

16. The cardiac assist system as claimed in claim 11, wherein said optical-electrical lead system includes a fiber optic based communication system.

17. The cardiac assist system as claimed in claim 16, wherein said fiber optic communication system contains at least one channel within a multi-fiber optic bundle.

18. The cardiac assist system as claimed in claim 11, wherein said optical-electrical lead system includes a plurality of electrical leads.

19. The cardiac assist system as claimed in claim 18, wherein an electrode located on an end of an electrical lead has an anti-antenna geometrical shape, said anti-antenna geometrical shape preventing said electrode from picking up and conducting stray electromagnetic interference.

20. The cardiac assist system as claimed in claim 18, wherein said electrical leads are unipolar leads.

21. The cardiac assist system as claimed in claim 18, wherein said electrical leads are bipolar leads.

22. The cardiac assist system as claimed in claim 18, wherein said electrical leads are a combination of unipolar and bipolar leads.

24. The tissue invasive device as claimed in claim 23, wherein said shielding is a metallic sheath to shield said lead system from electromagnetic interference.

25. The tissue invasive device as claimed in claim 23, wherein said shielding is a carbon composite sheath to shield said lead system from electromagnetic interference.

26. The tissue invasive device as claimed in claim 23, wherein said shielding is a polymer composite sheath to shield said lead system from electromagnetic interference.

27. The tissue invasive device as claimed in claim 23, wherein said biocompatible material is a non-permeable diffusion resistant biocompatible material.

29. The tissue invasive device as claimed in claim 28, wherein said fiber optic EMI-immune system comprises a fiber optic based communication system.

30. The tissue invasive device as claimed in claim 29, wherein said fiber optic communication system contains at least one channel within a multi-fiber optic bundle.

31. The tissue invasive device as claimed in claim 28, wherein said biocompatible material is a non-permeable diffusion resistant biocompatible material.

32. The tissue invasive device as claimed in claim 29, wherein said biocompatible material is a non-permeable diffusion resistant biocompatible material.

23. A tissue invasive device, comprising:

a primary device housing;

said primary device housing having a control circuit therein;

a lead system to transmit and receive signals between a selected tissue region and said primary device housing;

a shielding formed around said lead system to shield said lead system from electromagnetic interference; and

a biocompatible material formed around said shielding.

28. A tissue invasive device, comprising:

a primary device housing;

said primary device housing having a control circuit therein;

a fiber optic EMI-immune lead system to transmit and receive signals between a selected tissue region and said primary device housing; and

a biocompatible material formed around said fiber optic EMI-immune lead system.

33. A tissue invasive device, comprising:

a primary device housing;

said primary device housing having a control circuit therein;

an optical-electrical lead system to transmit and receive signals between a selected tissue region and said primary device housing;

shielding formed around said optical-electrical lead system to shield said optical-electrical lead system from electromagnetic interference; and

a biocompatible material formed around said shielding.

34. The tissue invasive device as claimed in claim 33, wherein said shielding is a metallic sheath to shield said optical-electrical lead system from electromagnetic interference.

35. The tissue invasive device as claimed in claim 33, wherein said shielding is a carbon composite sheath to shield said optical-electrical lead system from electromagnetic interference.

36. The tissue invasive device as claimed in claim 33, wherein said shielding is a polymer composite sheath to shield said optical-electrical lead system from electromagnetic interference.

37. The tissue invasive device as claimed in claim 33, wherein said biocompatible material is a non-permeable diffusion resistant biocompatible material.

38. The tissue invasive device as claimed in claim 33, wherein said optical-electrical lead system includes a fiber optic based communication system.

39. The tissue invasive device as claimed in claim 38, wherein said fiber optic communication system contains at least one channel within a multi-fiber optic bundle.

40. The tissue invasive device as claimed in claim 33, wherein said optical-electrical lead system includes a plurality of electrical leads.

41. The tissue invasive device as claimed in claim 40, wherein an electrode located on an end of an electrical lead has an anti-antenna geometrical shape, said anti-antenna geometrical shape preventing said electrode from picking up and conducting stray electromagnetic interference.

42. The tissue invasive device as claimed in claim 40, wherein said electrical leads are unipolar leads.
