Abstract

An advertising terminal (12) and a network of advertising terminals are described. The advertising terminal may be an ATM (12b). The ATM (12b) comprises a transceiver (80) for wireless communication with portable devices (26,28) in the vicinity of the ATM (12b). The ATM (12b) is operable to create a profile of persons in the vicinity of the ATM (12b) by detecting portable devices such as PDAs (26) and cellphones (28) that have a wireless communications facility (26a,28a) and identifying the owners of the portable devices. The ATM is also operable to display an advertisement appropriate for the created profile of persons.

Claims

1. An advertising terminal comprising:

a transceiver for wireless communication with portable devices in the vicinity of the terminal;

means for creating a profile of persons in the vicinity of the terminal by detecting portable devices; and

a display for displaying an advertisement appropriate for the created profile of persons.

2. A terminal according to claim 1, wherein the means for creating a profile of persons in the vicinity of the terminal includes means for identifying the owners of the portable devices.

3. A terminal according to claim 1, wherein the means for creating a profile of persons in the vicinity of the terminal includes means for accessing an anonymized database using an identifier associated with each detected portable device.

4. A terminal according to claim 1, wherein the profile of persons comprises demographic groups.

5. A terminal according to claim 1, wherein a profile of persons in the vicinity of the terminal is created over an extended period such that an advertisement is selected on the basis of the most common type of demographic group in the vicinity of the terminal.

6. A terminal according to claim 1, wherein a profile of persons in the vicinity of the terminal is created such that an advertisement is targeted at a person within the vicinity of the terminal.

7. A terminal according to claim 1, further comprising an additional display for presenting advertisements to passers by.

8. A self-service terminal comprising:

a transceiver for wireless communication with portable devices in the vicinity of the terminal;

means for detecting portable devices carried by persons in the vicinity of the terminal;

means for creating a profile of the persons carrying the detected portable devices;

means for selecting an advertisement based upon the created profile of persons; and

means including a display for displaying the selected advertisement.

9. A terminal according to claim 8, wherein the means for creating a profile of persons includes means for identifying the owners of the portable devices.

10. A terminal according to claim 8, wherein the means for creating a profile of persons includes means for accessing an anonymized database using an identifier associated with each detected portable device.

11. A terminal according to claim 8, wherein the profile of persons comprises demographic groups.

12. A terminal according to claim 8, wherein a profile of persons in the vicinity of the terminal is created over an extended period such that an advertisement is selected on the basis of the most common type of demographic group in the vicinity of the terminal.

13. A terminal according to claim 8, wherein a profile of persons in the vicinity of the terminal is created such that an advertisement is targeted at a person within the vicinity of the terminal.

14. A terminal according to claim 8, further comprising an additional display for presenting advertisements to passers by.

19. A method according to claim 18, wherein the step of creating a profile of persons includes the step of identifying the owners of the portable devices.

20. A method according to claim 18, wherein the step of creating a profile of persons includes the step of accessing an anonymized database using an identifier associated with each detected portable device.

15. An advertising terminal comprising:

a transceiver for wireless communication with portable devices in the vicinity of the terminal; and

means for transmitting information relating to goods and/or services available locally to the terminal to portable devices carried by passers by.

16. An advertising terminal network comprising:

at least one advertising terminal having a transceiver for wireless communication with portable devices in the vicinity of the terminal;

a data store in communication with the at least one advertising terminal;

means for (i) detecting portable devices in the vicinity of the terminal, (ii) communicating with the data store to identify the owners of the portable devices, (iii) creating a profile of the identified owners, and (iv) displaying an advertisement targeted at the identified owners.

17. A method of operating a self service terminal, the method comprising the steps of:

detecting one or more characteristics of a portable device in the vicinity of the terminal;

selecting an advertisement to be presented based on the detected one or more characteristics; and

displaying the selected advertisement.

18. A method of operating an automated teller machine (ATM), the method comprising the steps of:

detecting at least one characteristic of portable devices carried by persons in the vicinity of the ATM;

creating a profile of persons in the vicinity of the ATM based upon the at least one characteristic of portable devices;

selecting an advertisement to be presented on a display based upon the created profile of persons; and

displaying the selected advertisement.

21. A method of operating an advertising terminal, the method comprising the steps of:

wireless communicating with portable devices in the vicinity of the advertising terminal; and

transmitting information relating to goods and/or services available locally to the advertising terminal to portable devices carried by passers by.
