Abstract

This invention is a device for removing occlusive fatty plaque from vascular blood of humans. The action of fatty plaque removal occurs by pumping vascular blood through the device.

The device consists of a super-absorbent melt-blown microfiber oleophilic material, structural support for this absorbent material and an outer containment vessel in which the cleansing of blood is performed. Patient blood is directed from the circulatory system to a catheter and then to a pump and the device. After having been cleansed of fatty plaque, blood is directed back through a second catheter to the patient'"'"'s circulatory system.

Claims

1. A vascular occlusion plaque and fatty blood components removal device comprising:

oleophilic super-absorbent polymeric microfibers;

a porous support structure for said oleophilic super-absorbent polymeric microfibers;

a pump which forces patient blood through the oleophilic super-absorbent polymeric microfibers of this device

and a containment vessel which holds said oleophilic super-absorbent polymeric microfibers and said porous support structure

that, connected to a blood vessel, removes fatty blood components and plaque debris by absorption from vascular blood, simultaneous with or subsequent to a common vascular occlusion removal procedure.

2. The device of claim 1 wherein said containment vessel possesses an inlet port and an outlet port both of which are for connection of the device to a blood vessel.

3. The device of claim 1 wherein said containment vessel possesses an inlet chamber, an outlet chamber and said oleophilic super-absorbent polymeric microfibers and said porous support structure are located between the two chambers.

4. The device of claim 1 wherein said containment vessel contains said oleophilic super-absorbent polymeric microfibers and wherein said oleophilic super-absorbent polymeric microfibers are

comprised of meltblown oleophilic microfibers such that said microfibers are characterized as having a composition of polymeric oleophilic material;

have an extremely high surface area to volume ratio;

have a great affinity for fatty deposits inside blood vessels;

are composed of halogen substituted polyoleofinic polymer;

or are composed of non-substituted polyoleofinic polymer

and very good examples of said microfibers are the commercial product manufactured and sold by the 3M Company, Type 156 and Type 159 “

pads, mats, and sheets.

5. The device of claim 1 wherein said containment vessel contains a support structure for said oleophilic super-absorbent polymeric microfibers and which is composed of porous material.

6. The device of claim 1 wherein said oleophilic super-absorbent polymeric microfibers are contained within a permeable envelope of woven or non-woven material which acts to hold the structurally weak microfibers in place, inside the containing sock.

7. The device of claim 1 wherein all components are medically sterilizable.

8. The device of claim 1 which is useful for the removal of vascular debris, resident inside blood vessels after said blood vessels have been acted upon by other common medical vascular occlusion removal devices.

9. The device of claim 1 is useful to a vascular surgeon by removing of unwanted fatty vascular material, resident inside a blood vessel from the place of residency inside the blood vessel and then out of said blood vessel.

10. The device of claim 1 effectively collects oleophilic type debris, originating from inside a blood vessel and completely removes those obstructions and oleophilic type debris from a blood vessel as blood is forced to transit through the device.

11. The device of claim 1, when used simultaneous with an accompanying vascular surgery procedure, does cleanse the whole of a patient'"'"'s blood external to the patient.

12. The device of claim 1, which utilizes a pump which may be either the patient'"'"'s own heart or which may be an external, mechanical, manufactured pump.

14. One example of procedures utilizing said common industry vascular occlusion removal devices of claims 1 and 13 is angioplasty.

15. The device of claim 13 is effective for both elimination of unwanted vascular obstructions out of blood vessels and for removal of debris remaining in blood vessels after a common vascular occlusion removal procedure has been performed.

16. The device of claim 13 is effective for both elimination of unwanted vascular obstructions out of blood vessels and for removal of debris remaining in blood vessels as blood is forced through the device.

18. One example of a common medical device, implanted for the purpose of supporting the inside wall of a blood vessel of claim 17, is a stent.

19. The device of claim 17 is effective for both elimination of unwanted vascular obstructions out of blood vessels and for removal of debris remaining in blood vessels after a common vascular occlusion removal procedure has been performed.

20. The device of claim 17 is effective for both elimination of unwanted vascular debris out of blood vessels and for removal of debris remaining in blood vessels as blood is forced through the device.

13. A vascular occlusion plaque and fatty blood components removal device which removes fatty substances by absorption from vascular blood, comprising:

oleophilic super-absorbent polymeric microfibers;

a porous support structure for said oleophilic super-absorbent polymeric microfibers;

a pump which forces patient blood through the oleophilic super-absorbent polymeric microfibers of this device

and a containment vessel which holds said oleophilic super-absorbent polymeric microfibers

while connected to a blood vessel and as blood is forced to transit through the device, which is effective for both transportation of unwanted vascular obstructions out of blood vessels and for removal of debris remaining in blood vessels after a common vascular occlusion removal procedure has been performed.

17. A vascular occlusion plaque and fatty blood components removal device which removes by absorption from vascular blood, comprising:

oleophilic super-absorbent polymeric microfibers;

a porous support structure for said oleophilic super-absorbent polymeric microfibers

a pump which forces patient blood through the oleophilic super-absorbent polymeric microfibers of this device

and a containment vessel which holds said oleophilic super-absorbent polymeric microfibers and said support structure

that removes fatty vascular debris, resident inside blood vessels after the implantation of a common medical device intended to increase and support the inside wall of a blood vessel.
