Abstract

An optical biodisc has a substrate, a first reflective layer over the substrate, an opening in the first reflective layer for receiving an investigational feature, and a second reflective layer over the opening for reflecting light transmitted through the substrate.

Claims

1. An optical biodisc comprising:

a light transmissive substrate;

a first reflective layer over the substrate having at least one opening for receiving an investigational feature;

a second reflective layer at least over the opening; and

a cap over the second reflective layer.

2. The biodisc of claim 1, wherein the substrate is substantially circular with a diameter and thickness substantially similar to those of a compact disc.

3. The biodisc of claim 1, wherein the substrate and cap each include polycarbonate.

4. The biodisc of claim 1, wherein the substrate has one or more grooves formed therein.

5. The biodisc of claim 4, wherein the grooves are used to encode data that can be read independently of the investigational feature.

6. The biodisc of claim 1, wherein the first reflective layer has encoded information being readable by an optical disc drive system.

7. The biodisc of claim 1, further comprising an adhesive layer between the substrate and the cap, the adhesive layer having at least one cut-out portion to define a fluidic circuit, the fluidic circuit including the viewing window.

8. The biodisc of claim 7, wherein the fluidic circuit is substantially U-shaped.

9. The biodisc of claim 7, wherein the fluidic circuit includes at least three chambers connected by passages therebetween.

10. The biodisc of claim 7, wherein the cap has a port for providing access to the fluidics circuit.

11. The biodisc of claim 1, wherein a dye layer is between the substrate and the first reflective layer, the dye layer allowing information to be written to the disc.

12. The biodisc of claim 11, wherein the substrate has grooves, the dye layer extending into the grooves.

13. The biodisc of claim 1, wherein the first reflective layer is selected from the group consisting of aluminum and gold.

14. The biodisc of claim 1, wherein the substrate has grooves and the first reflective layer includes a metal layer extending into the grooves

15. The biodisc of claim 1, wherein the bottom of the viewing window is coplanar with the top of the substrate.

16. The biodisc of claim 1, wherein the bottom of the viewing window extends into the substrate.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein the first reflective layer encodes operational information.

19. The system of claim 18, further comprising a motor for rotating the disc and a controller for controlling the rotation by the motor, the encoded operational information being read and used to control the rotation by the motor.

20. The system of claim 17, the substrate having grooves formed therein and filled with dye.

21. The system of claim 17, the substrate having grooves formed therein and filled with the first reflective layer.

17. A biodisc system comprising:

a biodisc having first and second reflective layers spaced apart from each other;

a light source for directing light to the biodisc; and

a detector for detecting light reflected from the first reflective layer of the biodisc, and for detecting light from the second reflective layer when the light is directed to the opening.

22. A method for forming an optical disc, comprising:

forming a first reflective layer over a substrate such that there is at least a first portion without the first reflective layer;

forming a second reflective layer on a second portion of a cap; and

assembling the substrate and cap so that the substrate and cap are parallel along a first direction and the first portion and second portion are aligned along a second direction perpendicular to the first direction.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the first reflective layer is formed over the substrate and a portion is removed.

24. The method of claim 22, wherein the first reflective layer is patterned over the substrate so that it is provided on the substrate with the first portion lacking.

25. The method of claim 22, further comprising forming a capture layer over the first portion, the capture layer adapted to receive a biological material for capturing a reporter introduced into a volume between the first and second portions.

26. The method of claim 22, further comprising providing a channel layer between the substrate and cap, the channel layer having a pattern cut out, such that when the substrate, cap, and channel layer are assembled, the pattern in the channel layer defining a fluidic channel in the biodisc.

27. The method of claim 26, further comprising forming an opening in the cap over a portion of the fluidic channel.

28. An optical disc having a substrate and a wobble groove in the substrate, the wobble groove being filled with a metal.
