Abstract

An assembly, and an associated method, for controlling the granularity at which a content provider is able to access positional indicia associated with the positioning of a mobile station. A profile database is created which is selectably accessible by a content provider. Positional indicia associated with the positioning of the mobile station is maintained at the profile database. The content provider requests access to the positional indicia stored at the profile database. And, positional indicia associated with the mobile station is selectably permitted to be provided to the content provider at a granularity level at which the content provider is permitted to access the positional indicia.

Claims

1. In a radio communication system having a network portion and a mobile station moveable throughout a geographical area, positioning of the mobile station identifiable at a first level of precision, an improvement of an assembly for selectably permitting indicia associated with the positioning of the mobile station at a selected level of precision to be accessed by at least a first correspondent node, said assembly comprising:

a profile storage element coupled to the network portion of the radio communication system, said profile storage element for storing a profile database in which indicia identifying the at least the first correspondent node together with the selected level of precision by which the positioning of the mobile station is permitted to be accessed by the at least the first correspondent node.

The assembly of claim 1 wherein said profile storage element is further coupled to receive indications of the positioning of the mobile station identified at the first level of precision, said profile storage element further for storing at the database positional indicia identifying the positioning of the mobile station.

The assembly of claim 2 wherein the database stored at said profile storage element is selectably accessible by the at least the first correspondent node to access, at the selected level of precision associated with the at least the first correspondent node, the positional indicia identifying the positioning of the mobile station.

The assembly of claim 3 further comprising a granularity selection coupled to said profile storage element and coupled to receive indicia of a request by the at least the first correspondent node to access the positional indicia identifying the positioning of the mobile station, said granularity selector for indicating the selected level of precision by which the positioning of the mobile station is permitted to be accessed by the at least the first correspondent node.

The assembly of claim 4 wherein the indications of the positioning of the mobile station identified at the first level of precision are maintained at the database stored at said profile storage element and wherein said granularity selector granularizes the indications of the positioning of the mobile station to permit the at least the first correspondent node to access the positional indicia at the selected level of precision associated with the at least the first correspondent node maintained at the database.

6. The assembly of claim 5 wherein said granularity selector further includes a translation for translating the positional indicia, maintained at the database at the first level of precision, into positional indicia at the selected level of precision.

The assembly of claim 1 wherein the at least the first correspondent node comprises the first correspondent node and at least a second correspondent node and wherein the profile database stored at the said profile storage element includes indicia identifying the first correspondent node together with the selected level of precision permitted thereof and indicia identifying the at least the second correspondent node together with the selected level of precision permitted thereof.

8. The assembly of claim 1 further comprising a profile creator positioned at the mobile station, said profile creator for creating the indicia stored at the profile database maintained at said profile storage element.

9. The assembly of claim 8 wherein the mobile station comprises a user actuator and wherein the indicia created by said profile creator is created responsive to user actuation of the user actuator.

The assembly of claim 1 wherein the at least the first correspondent node comprises the first correspondent node and at least a second correspondent node, wherein the first correspondent node forms a member of a first correspondent-node set and the second correspondent node forms a member of a second correspondent-node set and wherein the indicia stored at the profile database maintained by said profile storage element comprises indicia identifying the first and at least second correspondent nodes, respectively, stored in terms of the first correspondent-node set and the at least the second correspondent-node set.

11. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the at least the first correspondent node is selectably permitted access to the indicia associated with the first correspondent node set through generation of an access request therefor.

12. The assembly of claim 11 further comprising an access request detector coupled to said profile storage element, said access request detector for detecting the access request generated by the at least the first correspondent node.

13. The assembly of claim 12 wherein said access request detector further selectably permits access of the at least the first correspondent node to the indicia stored at the database maintained at said profile storage element.

The assembly of claim 13 wherein the access to the indicia stored at the database selectably permitted by said access request detector is made responsive to values of the selected level of precision stored at the database which identifies the selected level of precision by which the positioning of the mobile station is permitted to be accessed.

15. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the selected level of precision by which the positioning of the mobile station is permitted to be accessed is a lesser level of precision than the first level of precision.

18. The method of claim 17 comprising the additional operation of translating the positional indicia, maintained at the first level of precision, in to positional indicia at the selected level of precision.

19. The method of claim 18 further comprising the operation of generating, at the at least the first correspondent node, a request to access the positional indicia associated with the mobile station.

The method of claim 19 further comprising the operation, responsive to access by the at least the first correspondent node of the positional indicia, of generating, at the first correspondent node, a message for communication to the mobile station, the message of values responsive to the positional indicia.

In a radio communication system having a network portion and a mobile station moveable throughout the geographical area, positioning of the mobile station identifiable at a first level of precision, a combination with the mobile station of apparatus for initiating creation of a profile database, said apparatus comprising:

a user actuator actuable to select indicia to be maintained at the profile database, the indicia including identification of at least a first correspondent node together with a selected level of precision by which the positioning of the mobile station is permitted to be accessed by the at least the first correspondent node; and

a profile creation signal generator coupled to said user actuator, said profile creation signal generator for generating a profile creation signal for communication to the network infrastructure, the profile creation signal of values representative of the indicia selected by actuation of said user actuator.

In a method for communicating in a radio communication system having a network portion and a mobile station moveable throughout a geographical area, positioning of the mobile station identifiable at a first level of precision, an improvement of a method for selectably permitting indicia associated with the positioning of the mobile station at a selected level of precision to be accessed by at least a first correspondent node, said method comprising:

Storing, at a profile database, indicia identifying the at least the first correspondent node together with the selected level of precision by which the positioning of the mobile station is permitted to be accessed by the at least the first correspondent node;

maintaining positional indicia identifying the positioning of the mobile station at the first level of precision; and

selectably permitting access to the positional indicia by the at least the first correspondent node, access permitted at the selected level of precision identified in the profile database to be associated with the at least the first correspondent node.
