Abstract

A method and apparatus to calibrate an LED matrix display such that a driver will provide a proper precharge voltage to LED elements within the display during a scan period. A current is driven through a calibration element, and a voltage reflecting the steady-state element voltage is measured and stored as a calibration value. A processor controls whether to precharge during the calibration cycle, and determines when the calibration cycle is completed. During subsequent normal scans, a driver applies a voltage based on the stored calibration value to rapidly precharge parasitic capacitance associated with a display element to a proper value, and also drives a selected current through the device.

Claims

1. A method of charging an element in a display, the method comprising:

determining a steady state voltage of at least one of a plurality of elements in a display;

applying a precharge voltage across one of the elements in the display, wherein the precharge voltage is based at least in part upon the determined steady state voltage; and

driving a current through the element, wherein driving current causes the illumination of at least a portion of the display.

2. The method of claim 1, additionally comprising applying a second voltage to one end of the element thereby preventing the conduction of current across the element.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the element is an organic light emitting diode.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein determining the steady state comprises determining when a rate of change of the voltage across the display element falls below a selected threshold.

5. The method of claim 1, determining the steady state comprises determining when the voltage across the display element does not vary significantly.

6. The method of claim 1, determining the steady state comprises determining the difference of successive sensed values of the voltage across the display element.

7. A method of charging an element in a display, the method comprising:

determining a first voltage;

applying a second voltage across an element in the display, wherein the second voltage is based at least in part upon the determined first voltage; and

driving a current through the element.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein determining the first voltage comprises measuring a voltage across the element when the element is conducting a current.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein determining the first voltage comprises measuring a voltage across at least an element, a row connection and a column connection.

10. The method of claim 7, wherein determining the first voltage comprises determining a steady state voltage of at least an element in the display.

11. The method of claim 7, additionally comprising applying a third voltage to one end of the element thereby preventing the conduction of current across the element.

12. The method of claim 7, wherein the element is an organic light emitting diode.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein the means for determining the voltage comprises means for measuring a voltage across the element when the element is conducting a current.

15. The system of claim 13, wherein the means for determining the voltage comprises means for measuring a voltage across at least an element, a row connection and a column connection.

16. The system of claim 13, wherein determining the voltage comprises means for determining a steady state voltage of an element.

17. The system of claim 13, wherein the means for applying the determined voltage comprises means for applying a second voltage to one end of the element thereby preventing the conduction of current across the element.

18. The system of claim 13, wherein the element is an organic light emitting diode.

20. The method of claim 19, further comprising electrically connecting a precharge circuit to the first terminal region of the display element, the precharging circuit configured to output a precharge voltage to the display element based upon the representation of the conduction voltage.

21. The method of claim 19, further comprising electrically connecting a controller to the sensing circuit, the controller configured to direct the sensing circuit to sample the display element voltage.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the controller is further configured to determine a corresponding steady-state voltage representation.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the controller is further configured to coordinate transfer to the storage device of the steady-state voltage representation and is configured to direct retrieval of the steady-state voltage representation during a non-calibration mode of operation.

24. The method of claim 19, wherein the steady state voltage is reached when a rate of change of the voltage across the display element falls below a selected threshold.

25. The method of claim 19, wherein the steady state is reached when the voltage across the display element does not vary significantly.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein determining whether the voltage across the display element does not vary significantly is determined by determining the difference of successive sensed values of the voltage across the display element.

27. The method of claim 19, wherein the display element is an organic light emitting diode (OLED).

28. The method of claim 27, wherein the OLED is a polymer OLED.

29. The method of claim 27, wherein the OLED is a small-molecule OLED.

30. The method of claim 19, wherein the storage device is a memory.

13. A system for charging an element in a display, the method comprising:

means for determining a voltage;

means for applying the determined voltage across at least an element in the display; and

means for driving a current through the element.

19. A method of manufacturing a display device having at least one display element which includes first and second terminal regions, the method comprising:

electrically connecting a driver circuit to the first terminal region of the display element, the driver circuit configured to cause a current to flow through the display element and generate a steady state voltage;

electrically connecting a sensing circuit to the first terminal region, the sensing circuit configured to generate a representation of a conduction voltage created when the display device conducts a known current; and

electrically connecting a storage device to the sensing circuit, the storage device configured to store the steady state voltage representation and retrieve the steady state voltage representation during the non-calibration mode of operation.
