Abstract

An adaptive interactive preceptored teaching system for the remote education of a student provides lessons, obtains the student'"'"'s profile, uses the profile to select one of the lessons to be sent to the student, and sends that lesson to the student. A method for remote care of a diabetic patient involves providing lessons, obtaining the patient'"'"'s profile, using the profile to select a lesson to be sent to the patient, sending that lesson to the patient, offering the patient information reflecting the patient'"'"'s health, and offering the patient'"'"'s healthcare provider information regarding at least one of the patient'"'"'s study of the lesson, the patient'"'"'s health, and the patient'"'"'s medical appointments. Communication can take place via the Internet, and can be effected in a secure manner.

Claims

1. A method for remote education of a student, comprising the steps of:

providing a plurality of lessons;

obtaining a profile for the student, the profile including at least one value describing an attribute of the student;

using the profile to select one of the lessons to be sent to the student; and

sending the lesson selected to the student.

2. A method according to claim 1, further comprising the step of updating the profile after the student has completed the lesson.

3. A method according to claim 1, wherein information is exchanged over the Internet.

4. A method according to claim 3, wherein information is exchanged in a secure manner.

5. A computer-readable storage medium comprising a program for performing the method of claim 1.

6. Method for remote education of a student, comprising the steps of:

providing a plurality of lessons;

obtaining a profile for the student, the profile including at least one value describing an attribute of the student;

using the profile to select one of the lessons to be sent to the student;

sending the lesson selected to the student;

administering a quiz based on the lesson selected to the student;

grading the quiz to obtain a quiz result;

offering to inform the student of the quiz result; and

offering to inform a preceptor of at least one of a time spent by the student studying the lesson and the quiz result.

7. A method according to claim 6, further comprising the step of updating the profile based upon the quiz result

8. A method according to claim 6, wherein information is exchanged over the Internet.

9. A method according to claim 8, wherein information is exchanged in a secure manner.

10. A method according to claim 6, further comprising the step of statistically analyzing student performance.

11. A computer-readable storage medium comprising a program for performing the method of claim 6.

A method according to claim 12, wherein the profile comprises a value of at least one of an a1c level, a urine albumin level, a cholesterol profile, a body weight, a body mass index, a blood pressure, a foot sensitivity assessment, an upcoming medical appointment, and a number of lessons that have been completed for the diabetic patient.

14. A method according to claim 13, further comprising the step of updating the profile to reflect a change in the value.

15. A method according to claim 12, further comprising the step of alerting the healthcare provider when the value crosses a predetermined level.

16. A method according to claim 12, wherein information is exchanged over the Internet.

17. A method according to claim 16, wherein information is exchanged in a secure manner.

18. A method according to claim 12, further comprising the steps of

administering a quiz based on the lesson selected to the diabetes patient;

grading the quiz to obtain a quiz result;

offering to inform the diabetes patient of the quiz result; and

offering to inform the healthcare provider of at least one of a time spent by the diabetes patient studying the lesson and the quiz result.

19. A method according to claim 18, further comprising the step of updating the profile to reflect the quiz result.

20. A method according to claim 12, further comprising the step of effecting a communication between the diabetic patient and the healthcare provider.

21. A method according to claim 12, wherein the healthcare provider administers initially creates the profile.

12. A method for remote care of a diabetic patient under the supervision of a healthcare provider, comprising the steps of:

providing a plurality of lessons;

obtaining a profile for diabetic patient, the profile including at least one value describing an attribute of the diabetic patient;

using the profile to select one of the lessons to be sent to the diabetic patient;

sending the lesson selected to the diabetic patient for study;

offering the diabetic patient information reflecting the diabetic patient'"'"'s health; and

offering the healthcare provider information regarding at least one of the diabetic patient'"'"'s study of the lesson, the diabetic patient'"'"'s health, and the diabetic patient'"'"'s medical appointments.
