Abstract

The present invention includes a method, apparatus and system for STANDARD VOICE USER INTERFACE AND VOICE CONTROLLED DEVICES as described in the claims. Briefly, a standard voice user interface is provided to control various devices by using standard speech commands. The standard VUI provides a set of standard VUI commands and syntax for the interface between a user and the voice controlled device. The standard VUI commands include an identification phrase to determine if voice controlled devices are available in an environment. Other standard VUI commands provide for determining the names of the voice controlled devices and altering them.

Voice controlled devices are disclosed. A voice controlled device is defined herein as any device that is controlled by speech, which is either audible or non-audible. A voice controlled device may also be referred to herein as an appliance, a machine, a voice controlled appliance a voice controlled electronic device, a name activated electronic device, a speech controlled device, a voice activated electronic appliance, a voice activated appliance, a voice controlled electronic device, or a self-identifying voice controlled electronic device.

Claims

1. A method of determining if voice controlled devices are within a communication environment, the method comprising:

providing at least one voice controlled device having a speech recognition system for recognizing speech in the communication environment;

receiving an identification phrase associated with the at least one voice controlled device in the communication environment; and

the at least one voice controlled device communicating a response if the identification phrase is recognized.

2. The method of claim 1 for determining if voice controlled devices are within a communication environment, further comprisingwherein:

an additional condition that must be met for communication of the response is that prior to receiving an identification phrase associated with the voice controlled device, a first period of relative silence in the communication environment must be detected.

3. The method of claim 1 for determining if voice controlled devices are within a communication environment wherein,

the response is at least one appliance name communicated into the communication environment.

4. The method of claim 3 for determining if voice controlled devices are within a communication environment wherein,

the identification phrase is provided using audible speech.

5. The method of claim 3 for determining if voice controlled devices are within a communication environment wherein,

the identification phrase is provided using non-audible speech.

6. The method of claim 3 for determining if voice controlled devices are within a communication environment wherein,

the identification phrase is “

What is out there?”

.

7. A method of coordinating the identification of voice controlled devices within a communication environment, the method comprising:

providing at least one voice controlled device having a speech recognition system for recognizing speech in the communication environment;

receiving an identification phrase associated with the voice controlled device in the communication environment; and

if the identification phrase is recognized and if no standard signal is received by the at least one voice controlled device during a period of time before responding, the at least one voice controlled device communicates a response.

8. The method of claim 7 for coordinating the identification of voice controlled devices within a communication environment wherein,

the at least one voice controlled device responds by communicating first a standard signal and additional information thereafter into the communication environment.

9. The method of claim 8 for coordinating the identification of voice controlled devices within a communication environment wherein,

the additional information includes at least one appliance name.

10. The method of claim 7 for coordinating the identification of voice controlled devices within a communication environment, the method further comprisingwherein:

an additional condition that must be met for communication of the response is that prior to receiving an identification phrase associated with the voice controlled device, a period of relative silence in the communication environment must be detected.

11. The method of claim 8 for coordinating the identification of voice controlled devices within a communication environment wherein,

the identification phrase is provided using audible speech.

12. The method of claim 8 for coordinating the identification of voice controlled devices within a communication environment wherein,

the identification phrase is provided using non-audible speech.

13. The method of claim 8 for coordinating the identification of voice controlled devices within a communication environment wherein,

the identification phrase is “

What is out there?”

14. The method of claim 7 for coordinating the identification of voice controlled devices within a communication environment wherein,

an additional condition that must be met for communication of the response is that if the identification phrase includes an appliance name, those voice controlled devices associated with the appliance name respond and all others do not.

15. The method of claim 7 for coordinating the identification of voice controlled devices within a communication environment, the method further comprising:

d) if the identification phrase is recognized and if the standard signal is received by the at least one voice controlled device during the period of time before responding, the device modifies its behavior so as to decrease the likelihood that its response will overlap with another voice controlled device'"'"'s response.

16. The method of claim 15 for coordinating the identification of voice controlled devices within a communication environment wherein,

the behavior is modified to extend out the period of time before responding by a selected extension.

17. The method of claim 16 for coordinating the identification of voice controlled devices within a communication environment wherein,

the extension is selected in a manner which makes it unlikely to be the same as the extension selected by any other voice controlled device.

18. The method of claim 15 for coordinating the identification of voice controlled devices within a communication environment wherein,

the at least one voice controlled device responds by communicating at least one appliance name into the communication environment.

19. The method of claim 7 for coordinating the identification of voice controlled devices within a communication environment wherein,

the standard signal is a momentary tone communicated into the communication environment.

20. A method of coordinating the identification of a plurality of voice controlled devices within a communication environment, the method comprising:

providing at least two voice controlled device having a speech recognition system for recognizing speech and a standard signal;

receiving an identification phrase associated with one of the plurality of voice controlled devices in the communication environment; and

if the identification phrase is recognized by the at least two of the plurality of voice controlled devices, and if standard signals are communicated by at least two of the plurality of voice controlled devices such that their standard signals overlap in time in the communication environment, each of the voice controlled devices selects a period of time before responding and at least one of the plurality of voice controlled devices responds accordingly to its selection of the period of time.

21. The method of claim 20 for coordinating the identification of a plurality of voice controlled devices within a communication environment wherein,

the selection of the period of time before responding used by each voice controlled device is unlikely to be the same as that used by another voice controlled device.

22. A method of coordinating the identification of a plurality of voice controlled devices within a communication environment, the method comprising:

providing at least two voice controlled devices having a speech recognition system for recognizing speech and a standard signal, the at least two voice controlled devices having the same appliance name;

receiving the same appliance name and an identification phrase associated with the at least two voice controlled devices in the communication environment; and

if the same appliance name and the identification phrase is recognized by the at least two voice controlled devices and if the standard signals are communicated by the at least two voice controlled devices such that their standard signals overlap in time in the communication environment, each of the voice controlled devices selects a period of time before responding and at least one of the plurality of voice controlled devices responds accordingly to its selection of the period of time.

23. The method of claim 22 for coordinating the identification of a plurality of voice controlled devices within a communication environment wherein,

the selection of the period of time before responding used by each voice controlled device is unlikely to be the same as that used by another voice controlled device.

25. The voice controlled device of claim 24, wherein,

the identification phrase is provided using audible speech.

26. The voice controlled device of claim 24, wherein,

the identification phrase is provided using non-audible speech.

27. The voice controlled device of claim 24, wherein,

the identification phrase is “

What is out there?”

28. The voice controlled device of claim 24, wherein,

the response is the default appliance name communicated into the communication environment.

29. The voice controlled device of claim 24 further comprising:

code recorded in the processor readable storage medium to cause the voice controlled device before responding to listen for a first period of time for another voice controlled device to respond with a standard signal; and

wherein

an additional condition that must be met for communication of the response is that if no other voice controlled device responds with the standard signal in the first period, code recorded in the processor readable storage medium to cause it to respond.

30. The voice controlled device of claim 24 further comprising:

code recorded in the processor readable storage medium to cause the voice controlled device before responding to listen for a first period of time for another voice controlled device to respond with a standard signal; and

wherein

an additional condition that must be met for communication of the response is that if another voice controlled device responds with the standard signal in the first period, code recorded in the processor readable storage medium to cause the voice controlled device to modify its behavior so as to decrease the likelihood that its response will overlap with the another voice controlled device'"'"'s response.

31. The voice controlled device of claim 30, wherein,

the behavior is modified to extend out the first period before responding by a selected extension.

32. The voice controlled device of claim 31, wherein,

the extension is selected in a manner which makes it unlikely to be the same as the extension selected by any other voice controlled device.

24. A voice controlled device, comprising:

a processor;

a processor readable storage medium coupled to the processor;

code recorded in the processor readable storage medium to recognize an identification phrase associated with the voice controlled electronic device communicated in the communication environment; and

code recorded in the processor readable storage medium to communicate a response from the voice controlled electronic device if the identification phrase is recognized.

33. A plurality of voice controlled devices within a communication environment, each voice controlled device comprising:

a processor;

a processor readable storage medium coupled to the processor;

code recorded in the processor readable storage medium to recognize an identification phrase associated with the voice controlled electronic device communicated to the voice controlled electronic device in the communication environment after recognizing a period of relative silence; and

code recorded in the processor readable storage medium to communicate a response if the identification phrase is recognized.

34. The plurality of voice controlled devices of claim 33, wherein,

the identification phrase is provided using audible speech.

35. The plurality of voice controlled devices of claim 33, wherein,

the identification phrase is provided using non-audible speech.

36. The plurality of voice controlled devices of claim 33, wherein,

the identification phrase is “

What is out there?”

37. The plurality of voice controlled devices of claim 33, wherein,

the response is at least one appliance name communicated into the communication environment.

38. The plurality of voice controlled devices of claim 33, wherein,

an additional condition that must be met for communication of the response is that the identification phrase includes at least one appliance name and the voice controlled device associated with the at least one appliance name responds and any other of the plurality of controlled devices in the communication environment do not respond.

39. The plurality of voice controlled devices of claim 33, each further comprising:

code recorded in the processor readable storage medium to cause the voice controlled device before responding to listen for a first period of time for another voice controlled device to respond with a standard signal; and

wherein

an additional condition that must be met for communication of the response is that if no other voice controlled device responds with the standard signal in the first period, code recorded in the processor readable storage medium to cause it to respond.

40. The plurality of voice controlled devices of claim 33, each further comprising:

code recorded in the processor readable storage medium to cause the voice controlled device before responding to listen for a first period of time for another voice controlled device to respond with a standard signal for a first period; and

wherein

if another voice controlled device responds with the standard signal in the first period, code recorded in the processor readable storage medium to cause the voice controlled device to modify its behavior so as to decrease the likelihood that its response will overlap with the another voice controlled device'"'"'s response.

41. The plurality of voice controlled devices of claim 40, wherein,

the behavior is modified to extend out the first period before responding by a selected extension.

42. The plurality of voice controlled devices of claim 41, wherein,

the extension is selected in a manner which makes it unlikely to be the same as the extension selected by any other voice controlled device.
