Abstract

A stereoscopic media player is implemented by a software application loaded onto a PC having a DVD player and a video monitor interconnected therewith. The software application includes program instructions for mapping stereoscopic images stored in a side-by-side format on the DVD into an above-and-below format for display on the monitor.

Claims

1. A method for providing stereoscopic DVD movies, comprising:

providing a DVD that has been encoded with compressed stereoscopic images in a first format;

decoding the compressed images;

transforming the decoded images into a second format; and

providing the transformed images for display on a monitor.

2. A method as in claim 1, wherein the transforming step comprises mapping a plurality of pixels from the first format to the second format.

3. A method as in claim 2, wherein the mapping step comprises creating an index for each pixel for use in rendering the pixels on the monitor.

4. A method as in claim 3, wherein the second format includes a first image portion and a second image portion separated by a blanking portion, and wherein for a pixel (i,j) located in the first portion, the index is set equal to j*W*H/(h−

b)+i/2; and

wherein for a pixel (i,j) located in the second portion, the index is set equal to;

5. A method as in claim 1, wherein the first format is a side-by-side format.

6. A method as in claim 1, wherein the second format is an above-and-below format.

7. A method as in claim 1, wherein the second format is a page-flipping format.

8. A method for providing stereoscopic DVD movies, comprising:

encoding a DVD with video images in a conventional manner using stereoscopic images in a side-by-side format;

decoding the video images;

transforming the decoded images from a side-to-side format into a second format; and

providing the transformed images for display on a monitor.

9. A method as in claim 8, wherein the second format is an above-and-below format.

10. A method as in claim 8, wherein the second format is a page-flipping format.

11. A method as in claim 9, wherein the above-and-below format includes a left image portion and a right image portion separated by a blanking portion, and wherein the transforming step comprises mapping a plurality of pixels from the side-by-side format to the above-and-below format by creating an index for each pixel for use in rendering the pixels on the monitor.

12. A method as in claim 11, wherein for a pixel (i,j) located in the left image portion, the index is set equal to j*W*H/(h−

wherein for a pixel (i,j) located in the right image portion, the index is set equal to;

14. A stereoscopic media player as in claim 13, wherein the first format is a side-by-side format and the second format is an above-and-below format.

A stereoscopic media player as in claim 14, wherein the above-and-below format includes a left image portion and a right image portion separated by a blanking portion, and wherein the program instructions include steps for mapping a plurality of pixels from the side-by-side format to the above-and-below format by creating an index for each pixel for use in rendering the pixels on the monitor.

16. A method as in claim 11, wherein for a pixel (i,j) located in the left image portion, the index is set equal to j*W*H/(h−

A stereoscopic media player, comprising a software application for loading onto a PC having a DVD player and a video monitor interconnected therewith, said software application including program instructions for mapping stereoscopic images stored in a first format on a DVD into a second format for display on the monitor.

A stereoscopic media player, comprising a software application for loading onto a PC having a DVD player and a video monitor interconnected therewith, wherein a DVD encoded with video images in a conventional manner using stereoscopic images in a side-by-side format is played in the DVD player under the control of program instructions defining a filter graph, comprising:

a source filter adapted to receive a DVD signal having video and audio components from the DVD;

a splitter adapted to receive the DVD signal from the source filter and to divide the signal into a video component and an audio component;

a video decoder adapted to receive the video component from the splitter and to decode the video component; and

a transform renderer adapted to convert the video component from a side-by-side format to an above-and-below format and to render the converted video component on the monitor.

18. A stereoscopic media player, comprising a software application for loading onto a PC having a DVD player and a video monitor interconnected therewith, wherein a DVD encoded with video images in a conventional manner using stereoscopic images in a side-by-side format is played in the DVD player under the control of program instructions defining a filter graph, comprising:

a source filter adapted to receive a DVD signal having video and audio components from the DVD;

a splitter adapted to receive the DVD signal from the source filter and to divide the signal into a video component and an audio component;

a video decoder adapted to receive the video component from the splitter and to decode the video component;

a transform filter adapted to convert the video component from a side-by-side format to an above-and-below format; and

a video renderer adapted to render the converted video component on the monitor.
