Abstract

A semiotic analysis system, computer readable medium and method are described. The system has a computer and a searchable database in communication with the computer. The database has a piece of media, a portion of which is associated with a semiotic describer. The computer readable medium has pieces of media, at least one of which has a portion identified by a semiotic describer.

The method includes providing a database of pieces of media, portions of which are associated with a semiotic describer. A query having a semiotic signifier is provided, and the query is used to search for and retrieve possibly relevant media corresponding to the query.

Claims

1. A semiotic analysis system, comprising:

a computer having software thereon that is capable of causing the computer to accept a query, and to search a database for entries in the database corresponding to the query; and

a database in communication with the computer, the database having an entry that corresponds to a piece of media wherein a portion of the piece of media is identified by a describer that indicates a semiotic property of the portion.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the semiotic property is a relation between a representamen in the portion and an immediate object in the portion.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the describer further indicates whether the relation is descriptive.

4. The system of claim 2, wherein the describer further indicates whether the relation is denominative.

5. The system of claim 2, wherein the describer further indicates whether the relation is distributive.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the semiotic property is a relation between a representamen in the portion and a dynamic object in the portion.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein the describer further indicates whether the relation between the representamen and the object is iconic.

8. The system of claim 6, wherein the describer further indicates whether the relation between the representamen and the object is indexic.

9. The system of claim 6, wherein the describer further indicates whether the relation between the representamen and the object is symbolic.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein the semiotic property is a relation between a representamen in the portion and a mode of being of an object in the portion.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein the describer further indicates whether the relation is abstractive.

12. The system of claim 10, wherein the describer further indicates whether the relation is concretive.

13. The system of claim 10, wherein the describer further indicates whether the relation is collective.

14. The system of claim 1, wherein the semiotic property is a relation between a representamen in the portion and an immediate interpretant of the representamen.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein the describer further indicates whether the relation is hypothetical.

16. The system of claim 14, wherein the describer further indicates whether the relation is categorical.

17. The system of claim 14, wherein the describer further indicates whether the relation is relative.

18. The system of claim 1, wherein the semiotic property is a relation between a representamen in the portion and a dynamic interpretant in the portion.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein the describer further indicates whether the relation is sympathetic.

20. The system of claim 18, wherein the describer further indicates whether the relation is percussive.

43. The computer readable medium of claim 42, wherein the describer further indicates whether the relation is descriptive.

81. A method of identifying a relevant piece of media, comprising:

providing a database having a describer corresponding to a portion of a piece of media, the describer indicating a semiotic property of the portion;

providing a query having a signifier indicating a semiotic property of the query;

searching the database to determine whether the query matches the portion of the piece of media, and to determine whether the signifier matches the describer;

providing a first indication if a match between the query and the portion of the piece of media is determined; and

if a match between the query and the portion of the piece of media is determined, then providing a second indication if a match between the signifier and the describer is determined.

82. The method of claim 81, wherein the second indication is a high priority.

83. The method of claim 81, wherein providing the database includes selecting the describer from a set of describers corresponding to a semiotic division that has at least two dimensions wherein each of the two dimensions is further divided into a set of three elements.
