Abstract

The invention relates to a light emitting treatment device including one or more light members which are configured to emit energy for photodynamic therapy at a treatment field. The treatment device may be made of a polymeric material configured to conform to a body surface. The light members may be disposed in a substantially uniform array and be configured to emit energy in a substantially uniform pattern. The light emitting treatment device may provide light variable feedback to a control apparatus. The light emitting treatment device may further include a heat dissipating layer, a layer of gold or gold alloy, or a layer of adhesive disposed on at least one of the one or more surfaces. Methods of using the treatment device are also disclosed.

Claims

1. A light emitting treatment device comprising:

a flexible polymer substrate element adapted to be used in association with a treatment field;

one or more light members disposed upon the substrate element, said one or more light members providing a light dosage rate to the treatment field at a value between about 25 mw/cm² to about 150 mw/cm²; and

a heat dissipating element disposed in relation to the one or more light members and transferring heat generated by the one or more light members away from the treatment field.

2. The light emitting treatment device of claim 1 wherein the substrate element is provided in touching contact with a patient during a photodynamic therapy.

3. The light emitting treatment device of claim 2 wherein the substrate element is shaped to be received into a mouth during the photodynamic therapy.

4. The light emitting treatment device of claim 1 wherein the one ore more light members are disposed in a substantially uniform array.

5. The light emitting treatment device of claim 1 wherein the one or more light members include one or more light emitting members within the group including:

VCSEL'"'"'s, LED'"'"'s, and laser diodes.

6. The light emitting treatment device of claim 1 wherein the one or more light members are fiber optic elements fed from a light source remote from the treatment field.

7. The light emitting treatment device of claim 1 further comprising:

a light blocking layer disposed upon the substrate element for blocking light from the one or more light members.

8. The light emitting treatment device of claim 7 wherein the light blocking layer is disposed between the light emitting treatment device and the treatment field, said light blocking layer being selectively configured in relation to an area within the treatment field.

9. The light emitting treatment device of claim 7 wherein the light blocking layer is a light reflective element.

10. The light emitting treatment device of claim 7 wherein the light blocking layer is removable from the treatment device.

11. The light emitting treatment device of claim 10 wherein the light blocking layer is provided in a kit containing a plurality of differently configured elements which are adapted to be applied to the treatment field .

12. The light emitting treatment device of claim 1 further comprising:

an adhesive element for adhesively securing the treatment device at the treatment field during a photodynamic therapy.

13. The light emitting treatment device of claim 12 wherein the adhesive element is an adhesive layer disposed between the treatment device and the treatment field.

14. The light emitting treatment device of claim 1 wherein the one or more light members provide a light dosage rate to the treatment field at a value between about 50 mw/cm² to about 150 mw/cm².

15. The light emitting treatment device of claim 1 wherein the one or more light members provide a light dosage rate to the treatment field at a value between about 100 mw/cm² to about 150 mw/cm².

16. The light emitting treatment device of claim 1 wherein the one or more light members provide a light dosage rate to the treatment field of about 150 mw/cm² .

17. The light emitting treatment device of claim 1 wherein the one or more light members included two different light emitting devices for providing two or more different light parameters to the treatment field.

18. The light emitting treatment device of claim 17 wherein the two different light emitting devices provide two different light ranges during a photodynamic therapy.

19. The light emitting treatment device of claim 17 wherein the two different light emitting devices are controlled to provide combined or separate illumination.

20. The light emitting treatment device of claim 1 wherein the heat dissipating element is sufficiently sized to transfer heat away from the treatment field such that the treatment temperature is not significantly increased during a photodynamic therapy.

21. The light emitting treatment device of claim 1 wherein the heat dissipating element comprises a heat sink.

22. The light emitting treatment device of claim 21 wherein the heat dissipating element comprises a finned radiator element.

23. The light emitting treatment device of claim 1 wherein the heat dissipating element comprises a fan for moving air relative to the light emitting treatment device.

24. The light emitting treatment device of claim 1 wherein the flexible polymer substrate is optically diffusive.

26. The light emitting treatment system of claim 25 wherein the substrate element is shaped to be received into a mouth during a photodynamic therapy.

27. The light emitting treatment system of claim 25 wherein the one or more light members are VCSEL devices.

28. The light emitting treatment system of claim 25 wherein the one or more light members are fiber optic elements fed from a light source remote from the treatment field.

29. The light emitting treatment system of claim 25 further comprising:

a light reflective layer disposed upon the substrate element for reflecting light from the one or more light members.

30. The light emitting treatment system of claim 29, wherein the light reflective layer is configured in relation to an area upon the treatment field.

31. The light emitting treatment system of claim 30 wherein the light reflective layer is removable from the treatment device.

32. The light emitting treatment system of claim 31 wherein the light reflective layer is provided in a kit containing a plurality of differently configured elements.

33. The light emitting treatment system of claim 25 further comprising:

an adhesive element for adhesively securing the substrate element at the treatment field during a photodynamic therapy.

34. The light emitting treatment system of claim 33 wherein the adhesive element is an adhesive layer disposed between the substrate element and the treatment field.

35. The light emitting treatment system of claim 25 wherein the feedback signal is a related to at least one of light wavelength (mn), light dosage (joules/cm²), or light dosage rate (mw/cm²).

36. The light emitting treatment system of claim 35 wherein the light emitting treatment system provides light wavelengths ranging from about 450 nm to about 850 nm;

a light dosage rate ranging from about 100 mw/cm² to about 150 mw/cm²; and

a light dose ranging from 0 J/cm² to about 300 J/cm².

37. The light emitting treatment system of claim 25 wherein the one or more light members are utilized to provide a light dose rate between about 50 mw/cm² to 150 mw/cm².

38. The light emitting treatment system of claim 25 wherein the one or more light members are utilized to provide a light dose rate between about 100 mw/cm² to 150 mw/cm².

39. The light emitting treatment system of claim 25 wherein the one or more light members are utilized to provide a light dose rate of approximately 150 mw/cm².

40. The light emitting treatment device of claim 25 wherein the one or more light members includes two different light emitting devices for providing two or more different light parameters to the treatment field.

41. The light emitting treatment device of claim 40 wherein two different light emitting devices provide two different light ranges during a photodynamic therapy.

42. The light emitting treatment device of claim 40 wherein the two different light emitting devices are controlled to provide combined or separate illumination.

25. A light emitting treatment system comprising:

a flexible polymer substrate element having one or more light members disposed in relation thereto for emitting light at a selected light intensity, said one or more light members providing a light dosage rate to a treatment field at a value between about 25 mw/cm² to about 150 mw/cm², said substrate further having one or more light detector elements responsive to the light intensity and defining a feedback signal; and

a controller device operatively coupled to the one or more light members and the one or more light detector elements, said controller device selectively controlling the light intensity in response to the feedback signal from the one or more light detector elements.

43. A method of performing a photodynamic therapy at a treatment field, said method comprising the steps of:

providing a photosensitive material to the treatment field;

providing a flexible polymer substrate element in association with the treatment field; and

illuminating one or more light members disposed upon the substrate element, said one or more light members providing a light dosage rate to the treatment field at a value between about 25 mw/cm² to about 150 mw/cm².

44. The method of claim 43 further comprising the step of:

providing a heat dissipating element disposed in relation to the one or more light members and transferring heat generated by the one or more light members away from the treatment field.

45. The method of claim 43 wherein the step of providing the photosensitive material to the treatment field is achieved through one or more of the following administration approaches:

topical application, injection, inhalation, and ingestion.

46. The method of claim 43 wherein the step of illuminating the one or more light members provides a light dosage rate at a value between about 50 mw/cm² to about 150 mw/cm².

47. The method of claim 43 wherein the step of illuminating the one or more light members provides a light dosage rate at a value between about 100 mw/cm² to about 150 mw/cm².

48. The method of claim 43 wherein step of illuminating the one or more light members provides a light dosage rate at a value of about 150 mw/cm².

49. The method of claim 43 further comprising the steps of:

providing a light blocking element between the one or more light members and the treatment field.

50. The method of claim 49 wherein the light blocking element is a light blocking layer and the step of providing includes the step of configuring the light blocking layer in relation to an area within the treatment field.

51. The method of claim 49 wherein the light blocking element is a light blocking layer and the step of providing includes the step of selecting the light blocking layer from a kit containing a plurality of differently configured light blocking elements.
