Abstract

A system for measuring user feedback concerning a particular web page of a website includes a first icon. The first icon is viewable on the particular web page independent of input from a user subsequent to the user accessing the particular web page. The first icon solicits user feedback concerning the particular web page as a whole from the user independent of input from the user subsequent to the user accessing the particular web page. The first icon receives user input indicating a desire to provide user feedback concerning the particular web page as a whole, and the user input causes a second icon to become viewable on the particular web page for providing the user feedback concerning the particular web page as a whole. Software associated with the second icon receives the user feedback concerning the particular web page as a whole for reporting to a website owner.

Claims

1. A system for measuring a page-specific subjective user reaction concerning each of a plurality of particular web pages of a website, the system comprising:

an icon viewable on each of the plurality of particular web pages of the website independent of input from a user subsequent to the user accessing the particular web page, the icon soliciting a page-specific subjective user reaction to the particular web page as a whole from the user independent of input from the user subsequent to the user accessing the particular web page, the icon appearing identically and behaving consistently on each of the particular web pages; and

software associated with the icon and operable to receive the page-specific subjective user reaction to the particular web page as a whole for reporting to a website owner to allow the website owner to access page-specific subjective user reactions across the plurality of particular web pages of the website to identify one or more particular web pages of the website for which the page-specific subjective user reactions are notable relative to page-specific subjective user reactions for other particular web pages of the website.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the software associated with the icon is incorporated into software of each particular web page and the user need not download software separate from the particular web page to provide the page-specific subjective user reaction to the particular web page.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the software associated with the icon is incorporated into a web browser of the user.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the icon comprises a multi-level rating scale for receiving a page-specific rating of the particular web page as a whole, the multi-level rating scale including at least one positive rating, a neutral rating, and at least one negative rating.

5. The system of claim 4, wherein each rating comprises at least one symbol selected from the group consisting of a plus sign and a minus sign.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the page-specific subjective user reaction to the particular web page as a whole is selected from the group consisting of:

a general page-specific user reaction to the particular web page as a whole; and

a specific page-specific user reaction to at least one characteristic of the particular web page as a whole.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein the characteristic of the particular web page as a whole is selected from the group consisting of content, design, and usability.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the particular web page is not viewable in its entirety within a browser window of the user, the icon remaining viewable in the browser window in response to the user scrolling to a previously unviewable portion of the particular web page.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the software associated with the icon causes the icon to become unviewable in response to the page-specific subjective user reaction to the particular web page and to remain unviewable while the user remains on the particular web page.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein the software associated with the icon is operable to receive demographic information from the user, in response to the page-specific subjective user reaction to the particular web page as a whole, for reporting to the website owner in association with the page-specific subjective user reaction to the particular web page as a whole.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein the plurality of particular web pages of the website on which the icon is viewable comprises less than all web pages of the website.

12. The system of claim 1, further comprising a computer system operable to display the particular web page to the user.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the software associated with the icon is incorporated into software of each particular web page and the user need not download software separate from the particular web page to provide the page-specific subjective user reaction to the particular web page.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein the software associated with the icon is incorporated into a web browser of the user.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein the icon comprises a multi-level rating scale for receiving a page-specific rating of the particular web page as a whole, the multi-level rating scale including at least one positive rating, a neutral rating, and at least one negative rating.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein each rating comprises at least one symbol selected from the group consisting of a plus sign and a minus sign.

18. The method of claim 13, wherein the page-specific subjective user reaction to the particular web page as a whole is selected from the group consisting of:

a general page-specific user reaction to the particular web page as a whole; and

a specific page-specific user reaction to at least one characteristic of the particular web page as a whole.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the characteristic of the particular web page as a whole is selected from the group consisting of content, design, and usability.

20. The method of claim 13, wherein:

the particular web page is not viewable in its entirety within a browser window of a user; and

the method further comprises causing the icon to remain viewable within the browser window in response to the user scrolling to a previously unviewable portion of the particular web page.

21. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

causing the icon to become unviewable in response to the page-specific subjective user reaction to the particular web page; and

causing the icon to remain unviewable while the user remains on the particular web page.

22. The method of claim 13, further comprising using software associated with the icon to receive demographic information from a user, in response to the page-specific subjective user reaction to the particular web page as a whole, for reporting to the website owner in association with the page-specific subjective user reaction to the particular web page as a whole.

23. The method of claim 13, wherein the plurality of particular web pages of the website on which the icon is viewable comprises less than all web pages of the website.

25. The system of claim 24, wherein the software associated with the second icon is incorporated into software of the particular web page and the user need not download software separate from the particular web page to provide the user feedback concerning the particular web page.

26. The system of claim 24, wherein the software associated with the second icon is incorporated into a web browser of the user.

27. The system of claim 24, wherein the particular web page is not viewable in its entirety within a browser window of the user, the icon remaining viewable in the browser window in response to the user scrolling to a previously unviewable portion of the particular web page.

28. The system of claim 24, wherein the software associated with the second icon causes the second icon to become unviewable in response to the user feedback concerning the particular web page and to remain unviewable while the user remains on the particular web page.

29. The system of claim 24, wherein the software associated with the second icon is operable to receive demographic information from the user, in response to the user feedback concerning the particular web page, for reporting to the website owner in association with the user feedback concerning the particular web page as a whole.

30. The system of claim 24, further comprising a computer system operable to display the particular web page to the user.

13. A method for measuring a page-specific subjective user reaction concerning each of a plurality of particular web pages of a website, the system comprising:

using an icon viewable on each of the plurality of particular web pages of the web site independent of input from a user subsequent to the user accessing the particular web page to solicit a page-specific subjective user reaction to the particular web page as a whole from the user independent of input from the user subsequent to the user accessing the particular web page, the icon appearing identically and behaving consistently on each of the particular web pages; and

using software associated with the icon to receive the page-specific subjective user reaction to the particular web page as a whole for reporting to a website owner to allow the website owner to access page-specific subjective user reactions across the plurality of particular web pages of the website to identify one or more particular web pages of the website for which the page-specific subjective user reactions are notable relative to page-specific subjective user reactions for other particular web pages of the website.

24. A system for measuring user feedback concerning a particular web page of a website, the system comprising:

a first icon viewable on the particular web page independent of input from a user subsequent to the user accessing the particular web page, the first icon soliciting user feedback concerning the particular web page as a whole from the user independent of input from the user subsequent to the user accessing the particular web page, the first icon operable to receive user input indicating a desire to provide user feedback concerning the particular web page as a whole, the user input causing a second icon to become viewable on the particular web page for providing the user feedback concerning the particular web page as a whole; and

software associated with the second icon and operable to receive the user feedback concerning the particular web page as a whole for reporting to a website owner.

31. A method for measuring user feedback concerning a particular web page of a website, the method comprising:

using a first icon viewable on the particular web page independent of input from a user subsequent to the user accessing the particular web page to solicit user feedback concerning the particular web page as a whole from the user independent of input from the user subsequent to the user accessing the particular web page, the first icon operable to receive user input indicating a desire to provide user feedback concerning the particular web page as a whole;

causing, in response to receiving the user input indicating a desire to provide user feedback concerning the particular web page as a whole, a second icon to become viewable on the particular web page for providing the user feedback concerning the particular web page as a whole; and

using software associated with the second icon to receive the user feedback concerning the particular web page as a whole for reporting to a website owner.

32. The method of claim 31, wherein the software associated with the second icon is incorporated into software of the particular web page and the user need not download software separate from the particular web page to provide the user feedback concerning the particular web page.

33. The method of claim 31 wherein the software associated with the second icon is incorporated into a web browser of the user.

34. The method of claim 31, wherein the particular web page is not viewable in its entirety within a browser window of the user, the icon remaining viewable in the browser window in response to the user scrolling to a previously unviewable portion of the particular web page.

35. The method of claim 31, wherein the software associated with the second icon causes the second icon to become unviewable in response to the user feedback concerning the particular web page and to remain unviewable while the user remains on the particular web page.

36. The method of claim 31, wherein the software associated with the second icon is operable to receive demographic information from the user, in response to the user feedback concerning the particular web page, for reporting to the website owner in association with the user feedback concerning the particular web page.
