Abstract

A process for managing medical data in an active implantable medical device such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, cardiometer or multisite device for use of the medical data by a specialized follow-up practitioner such as a cardiologist. The process is characterized by reading by telemetry the memory data (12) of the device (10) in a patient by use of a programmer (14), memorizing in a database within the programmer the raw medical data thus read, the database having a memory field (24) containing an identifier of the patient (26), an address (28) of the follow-up practitioner such as a cardiologist or a regular practitioner ensuring the medical follow-up of the patient, as well as the aforementioned raw medical data (30), transmitting by a telematic way (36) to that follow-up practitioner, at the corresponding address, the medical data relating to the identified patient, and collecting, treating and presenting to the follow-up practitioner the medical data thus transmitted. A dedicated software (44) implemented on a microcomputer (40) at the disposal of the follow-up practitioner is used for the collection of the raw data and its treatment, processing and display for use by the follow-up practitioner.

Claims

1. A process for managing medical data contained in a memory of an active implantable medical device, comprising:

providing a programmer having a telemetry system to communicate with said active implantable medical device and a database containing at least one patient identifier and associated with each patient identifier, an address of a follow-up practitioner ensuring medical treatment of the patient, and said medical data;

establishing a telemetry link between said active implantable medical device and said programmer;

reading said medical data in said memory using said programmer;

memorizing in said programmer database said medical data thus read;

transmitting to a microcomputer associated with said follow-up practitioner, at the associated follow-up practitioner address, the medical data associated with the identified patient; and

collecting, treating and presenting to the follow-up practitioner the medical data thus transmitted.

2. The process of claim 1 further comprising providing a dedicated software routine implemented on said microcomputer for collecting, treating and presenting said medical data to said follow-up practitioner.

The process of claim 1 wherein the follow-up practitioner further comprises one of a cardiologist and a regular practitioner, said database comprises an address for said cardiologist and said regular practitioner, and the transmitting step further comprises transmitting to the cardiologist said medical data at the cardiologist'"'"'s associated address.

The process of claim 1 wherein the follow-up practitioner further comprises one of a cardiologist and a regular practitioner, said database comprises an address for said cardiologist and said regular practitioner, and the transmitting step further comprises transmitting to the regular practitioner said medical data at the regular practitioner'"'"'s associated address.

5. The process of claim 1 further comprising providing the follow-up practitioner with a microcomputer having a software instruction set dedicated to collecting, treating and presenting said medical data to said follow-up practitioner.

6. The process of claim 1 wherein transmitting said medical data to said follow-up practitioner'"'"'s microcomputer comprises:

connecting said follow-up practitioner'"'"'s computer to said programmer;

requesting access to said stored medical data; and

transmitting a copy of said stored medical data to said follow-up practitioner'"'"'s microcomputer.

7. The process of claim 1 wherein transmitting said medical data to said follow-up practitioner'"'"'s microcomputer further comprises:

generating at the programmer a data file containing a copy of said medical data; and

electronically transmitting said data file to said follow-up practitioner'"'"'s microcomputer.

The process of claim 7 further comprising providing a remote database wherein transmitting said medical data further comprises transmitting said data file from the programmer to said remote database, storing said data file in the remote database, generating an inquiry at said follow-up practitioner'"'"'s microcomputer, transmitting said inquiry to the remote database, and, in response to said inquiry, transmitting said data file from the remote database to said follow-up practitioner'"'"'s microcomputer.
