Abstract

A telephone switching network having a plurality of nodes interconnected through the network through channels having dynamically changeable capacity. The telephone switching network includes a plurality of switching nodes and a network manager responsive to each one of the nodes for allocating traffic capacity of the network among the nodes dynamically in accordance with the traffic requested at the plurality of nodes. Each one of the nodes is coupled to the network through an ATM ADM. Each one of the ATM ADMs is coupled to a narrowband switch through an ATM switch. The nodes are interconnected through an ATM SONET.

Claims

1. A telephone switching network comprising a plurality of nodes interconnected through the network through channels having dynamically changeable capacity.

5. The network recited in claims 1, 2, 3 or 4 wherein the nodes are interconnected through an ATM SONET.

2. A telephone switching network, comprising:

a plurality of switching nodes;

a network manager responsive to each one of the nodes for allocating traffic capacity of the network among the nodes dynamically in accordance with traffic requested at the plurality of nodes.

3. The switching network recited in claim 2 wherein each one of the nodes includes an ATM ADM for coupling such node to the network.

4. The network recited in claim 3 wherein each one of the ATM ADMs is coupled to a narrowband switch through an ATM switch.

6. A method of operating a telephone switching network comprising the steps of:

providing a plurality of nodes interconnected through the network through channels; and

dynamically changing the capacity of the channels.

7. The method recited in claim 6 including the steps of:

providing a network having a plurality of switching nodes; and

dynamically allocating traffic capacity of the network in response to traffic capacity requested at each one of the nodes.

8. The method recited in claim 7 including the step of coupling each one of the nodes to the network through an ATM ADM.

9. The method recited in claim 8 including the step of coupling one of the ATM ADMs to a narrowband switch through an ATM switch.

10. The method recited claims 6, 7, 8 or 9 including the step of interconnecting the nodes through an ATM SONET.
