1. A vascular protection system adapted to be implanted through an endoluminal access in a blood vessel having a vessel wall, the protection system comprising a blood filtering element which is permeable to blood but impermeable to embolic materials, the blood filtering element having an axis, proximal and distal ends along the axis and inlet openings for entering blood and embolic materials into the blood filtering elements, said blood filtering elements being radially expandable or radially shrinkable with respect to the axis and comprising a supporting structure connected to a membrane having a proximal edge, the supporting structure peripherally comprising a series of wires having a length between the proximal and distal ends, and locally defining a substantially continuous peripheral mouth maintaining the proximal edge of the membrane for engaging the vessel wall.
