Abstract

A dynamic voltage restorer circuit 14 comprises capacitive storage means 16, switch means 18 and control means 20. The switch means 18 includes an array of anti-parallel diodes 34 and switchable unidirectional devices 36. Appropriate control of the switchable devices 36 by a control 20 allows the capacitor 16 to be connected in series into the power line 24a,24b, with either polarity, to inject stored energy into the line, thereby restoring the voltage.

Claims

1. A dynamic voltage restorer circuit for connection in a power line, the circuit comprising capacitive storage means, switch means, and control means operable to detect the voltage of the power line and to control the setting of the switch means in dependence on the result, the switch means being operable selectively either to connect the storage means in series into the power line to restore voltage on the line by providing stored energy to the line, or to connect the power line to bypass the storage means.

2. A circuit according to claim 1, wherein the switch means is operable to connect the storage means with either polarity in series into the power line.

3. A circuit according to claim 1, wherein the switch means comprises pairs of unidirectional current conductors in anti-parallel arrangement, each pair comprising at least one switchable device.

4. A circuit according to claim 3, wherein each pair comprises a switchable device in anti-parallel with a non-switchable device.

5. A circuit according to claim 3, wherein the switch means comprises a first pair of devices in which the switchable device has a conduction direction from the positive terminal of the capacitive storage means to the input from the power line.

6. A circuit according to claim 3, wherein a second pair of devices has the switchable device with a conduction direction from the input from the power line to the negative terminal of the storage means.

7. A circuit according to claim 3, wherein a third pair of devices has the switchable device with a conduction direction from the positive terminal of the storage means to the output to the power line.

8. A circuit according to claim 3, wherein a fourth pair of devices has the switchable device with a conduction direction from the output to the power line to the negative terminal of the storage means.

9. A circuit according to claim 1, wherein the control means is operable to connect and disconnect the storage means cyclically into the power line when voltage restoring is required.

10. A circuit according to claim 9, wherein the connection cycle frequency is much greater than the supply frequency on the power line.

11. A circuit according to claim 10, wherein the connection cycle frequency is at least 1,000 times and preferably 10,000 or 20,000 times per second.

12. A circuit according to claim 9, wherein the control means is operable to determine a mark-space ratio for connection of the storage means to cause sufficient energy to be provided to the line from the storage means to restore the power line voltage.

13. A circuit according to claim 1, wherein the circuit is associated with filter means connected to the power line downstream of the switch means.

14. A circuit according to claim 1, wherein the circuit comprises multiple modules, each as aforesaid, and connected in series along the power line, whereby the storage means of one or more modules can be used, according to the amount of energy required to be provided to the power line.

15. A circuit according to claim 1, wherein the or each capacitive storage means is charged from the power line when the power line voltage is correct.

16. A circuit according to claim 1, wherein the or each capacitive storage means is chargeable in series from the power line by connection to the power line upstream or downstream of the restorer circuit.

17. A circuit according to claim 16, wherein charging is by means of a voltage regulator circuit.

19. A power distribution system for use in transport applications including a circuit as claimed in claim 1 or claim 18.

20. A power distribution system for use with land based utilities including a circuit as claimed in claim 1 or claim 18.

18. A dynamic voltage restorer circuit for connection in a power line, the circuit comprising capacitive storage means, switch means, and control means operable to detect the voltage of the power line and to control the setting of the switch means in dependence on the result, the switch means being operable selectively either to connect the storage means in series into the power line to restore voltage on the line by providing stored energy to the line, or to connect the power line to bypass the storage means, and wherein the switch means comprises at least four pairs of uni-directional current conductors in anti-parallel arrangement, each pair comprising at least one switchable device, the switchable device of the first pair of devices having a conduction direction from the positive terminal of the capacitive storage means to the input from the power line, and the switchable device of the second pair of devices having a conduction direction from the input from the power line to the negative terminal of the storage means, and the switchable device of the third pair of devices having a conduction direction from the positive terminal of the storage means to the output to the power line, and the switchable device of the fourth pair of devices having a conduction direction from the output to the power line to the negative terminal of the storage means.
