Abstract

Powder overspray that is extracted from a spray booth is recovered back to a powder supply that is used to supply powder to the spray guns inside the spray booth. The powder overspray extracted from the booth is separated from the high flow air stream by and then discharged to a feed center. By recovering overspray powder in this fashion, the time required for a color change operation in the powder spray system is greatly reduced.

Claims

1. A powder color change procedure for a powder spray system including a spray gun disposed proximate to a spray booth, a duct connecting the spray booth to a cyclone unit, and a vacuum line connecting the cyclone unit to a feed center, the feed center including a powder hopper containing powder of a first color, a suction tube leading from the powder hopper to a powder pump, and a spray gun tube leading from the powder pump to the spray gun, the procedure comprising the steps of:

removing powder from the spray gun, the spray booth, the duct, the cyclone unit, the vacuum line, the suction tube, the powder pump, and the spray gun tube; and

replacing the powder of a first color with powder of a second color.

2. The powder color change procedure of claim 1, wherein the feed center includes a vacuum receiver and the vacuum line leads from the cyclone unit to the vacuum receiver, further comprising the step of removing powder from the vacuum receiver.

3. The powder color change procedure of claim 2, wherein the feed center includes a sieve disposed between the vacuum receiver and the powder hopper, further comprising the step of removing powder from the sieve.

4. The powder color change procedure of claim 1, further comprising the step of removing substantially all powder of the first color from the powder hopper before powder of a second color is placed within the powder hopper.

5. The powder color change procedure of claim 1, further comprising the step of replacing the powder hopper containing powder of the first color with a different powder hopper containing powder of the second color.

6. The powder color change procedure of claim 1, wherein a transfer pan is disposed between the cyclone unit and the vacuum line, the procedure further comprising the step of removing powder from the transfer pan.

7. The powder color change procedure of claim 6, wherein one or more cleaning devices are inserted into the vacuum line and passed through the vacuum line from the transfer pan to the feed center.

8. The powder color change procedure of claim 1, wherein the procedure is performed by a first person and a second person different from the first person.

9. The powder color change procedure of claim 8, wherein the first person performs most of the steps in or around the spray booth and the cyclone, and the second person performs most of the steps in or around the feed center.

10. The powder color change procedure of claim 1, wherein a person performing the procedure wears shoe covers when entering the spray booth.

11. The powder color change procedure of claim 10, further comprising the step of disabling the spray gun before a person enters the spray booth to perform a step in the procedure.

12. The powder color change procedure of claim 1, wherein the spray booth is moved to an offline position for performing one or more steps of the procedure.

13. The powder color change procedure of claim 1, wherein one or more steps is performed automatically by a control system.

14. The powder color change procedure of claim 1, wherein some amount of the powder of the second color is sprayed to waste before the powder spray system is used to spray an article.

15. The powder color change procedure of claim 14, wherein the amount of powder is about one pound.
