Abstract

A draping system provides a continuous sterile field between a patient incision area and one or more medical practitioners. The draping system has a quick release system incorporated into the drape that enables a medical practitioner to separate from the continuous sterile field without disrupting the sterile field around the practitioner or the patient. The draping system may include an abbreviated practitioner gown, a drain and an integral patient incision area or a flap for extending the continuous sterile field around to one or more additional operating room tables. A modular drape and gown system extends the sterile field beyond the operating table allowing practitioners to couple to the extended field. A tent provides an enclosed sterile field useful in mobile or other non operating room surgical environments. Integral lighting and information displays facilitate field surgical procedures.

Claims

1. A drape coupled to a patient positioned upon an operating table and providing a continuous sterile field between a practitioner and the operating table, the drape comprising:

a fastening element for fastening the drape to the practitioner; and

a separating element for enabling the practitioner to separate from the continuous sterile field while at least a portion of the drape is still fastened to the practitioner and at least a second portion of the drape is still coupled to the patient.

2. The drape according to claim 1 wherein said separating element comprises a perforation within the drape allowing the practitioner to separate from the continuous sterile field by parting the drape along said perforation.

3. The drape according to claim 1 wherein said fastening element includes at least a hook, an adhesive, a snap, or a tie for fastening the drape to the practitioner.

4. The drape according to claim 1 further comprising

an integral practitioner gown portion for providing at least a portion of the continuous sterile field between the practitioner and the patient.

5. The drape according to claim 4 wherein said integral practitioner gown portion is worn upon at least a torso, head, arm, face or hand of the practitioner.

6. The drape according to claim 1 wherein the drape provides a continuous sterile field between the practitioner and the patient and further comprises

an integral incision region at least partially covering a patient surgical area wherein a patient incision is made by simultaneously cutting through said integral incision region and at least a portion of the patient.

7. The drape according to claim 6 further wherein said integral incision region comprises:

a transparent panel for placement of said integral incision region upon the patient surgical area; and

an adhesive attached to said transparent panel for adhesively attaching said transparent panel to the patient surgical area wherein the patient incision is made by simultaneously cutting through said transparent panel and at least a portion of the patient.

8. The drape according to claim 6 wherein at least a portion of said integral incision region contains an antibiotic or antimicrobial agent.

9. The drape according to claim 1 further comprising

a drain for collecting fluids accumulated in the continuous sterile field between the practitioner and the operating table.

10. The drape according to claim 9 wherein said drain is gravity fed or has active suction.

11. The drape according to claim 9 wherein said drain includes a filter for draining fluids while retaining tissue within the drape.

12. An operating room draping system comprising:

a drape for facilitating a continuous sterile field between a practitioner and an operating table having a patient positioned thereon; and

at least a portion of a gown integral to said drape and worn by the practitioner for extending the continuous sterile field to include a sterile field between the patient and the practitioner.

13. The draping system according to claim 12 wherein

said at least portion of the gown provides a substantial portion of the sterile field between patient and the practitioner'"'"'s torso.

14. The draping system according to claim 12 wherein

said at least portion of the gown provides a substantial portion of the sterile field between patient and the practitioner'"'"'s head.

15. The draping system according to claim 12 wherein

said at least portion of the gown provides a substantial portion of the sterile field between patient and the practitioner'"'"'s arm.

16. The draping system according to claim 12 wherein

said at least portion of the gown provides a substantial portion of the sterile field between patient and the practitioner'"'"'s hand.

17. The draping system according to claim 12 wherein the practitioner

said at least portion of the gown provides a substantial portion of the sterile field between patient and the practitioner'"'"'s face.

18. The draping system according to claim 12 wherein said drape further comprises

a separating element for enabling the practitioner to separate from the continuous sterile field without removing said at least portion of the gown worn by the practitioner.

19. The draping system according to claim 18 wherein said separating element comprises a perforation within said drape allowing the practitioner to separate from the continuous sterile field by parting said drape along said perforation without removing said at least portion of the gown worn by the practitioner.

20. The draping system according to claim 12 wherein the drape includes

an integral incision region for at least partially coupling said drape to a patient surgical area wherein a patient incision is made by simultaneously cutting through said integral incision region and at least a portion of the patient.

21. The draping system according to claim 20 wherein said integral incision region comprises:

a transparent panel for placement of said integral incision region upon the patient surgical area; and

an adhesive attached to said transparent panel for adhesively attaching said transparent panel to the patient surgical area wherein the patient incision is made by simultaneously cutting through said transparent panel and at least a portion of the patient.

22. The draping system according to claim 20 wherein at least a portion of said integral incision region contains an antibiotic or antimicrobial agent.

23. The draping system according to claim 12 further comprising

a drain for collecting fluids accumulated in the continuous sterile field between the practitioner and the operating table.

24. The draping system according to claim 23 wherein said drain is gravity fed or has active suction.

25. The draping system according to claim 23 wherein said drain includes a filter for draining fluids while retaining tissue within the drape.

26. A surgical drape comprising:

a first portion of the drape for facilitating a continuous sterile field between a practitioner and an operating table having a patient positioned thereon; and

a second portion of the drape for extending the continuous sterile field to a second table.

27. The surgical drape according to claim 26 wherein said first and second portions are integral components of the surgical drape.

28. The surgical drape according to claim 26 further comprising:

a first fastening element for fastening said first portion of the drape to the practitioner; and

a second fastening element for fastening said second portion of the drape to the second table.

29. The surgical drape according to claim 28 wherein said first portion of the drape further comprises

a separating element for enabling the practitioner to separate from the continuous sterile field with said first fastening element still fastened the practitioner.

30. The surgical drape according to claim 29 wherein said separating element comprises a perforation within said first portion of the drape allowing the practitioner to separate from the continuous sterile field by parting said first portion of the drape along said perforation with said first fastening element still fastened the practitioner.

31. The surgical drape according to claim 26 further comprising

an integral practitioner gown portion for providing the at least a portion of a continuous sterile field between the practitioner and the patient.

32. The surgical drape according to claim 31 wherein said integral practitioner gown portion is worn upon the at least the practitioner'"'"'s torso, head, arm, face or hand.

33. The surgical drape according to claim 26 further for facilitating a continuous sterile field between the practitioner and a patient surgical area comprising

an integral incision region for at least partially coupling the drape to the patient surgical area wherein a patient incision is made by simultaneously cutting through the said integral incision region and at least a portion of the patient.

34. The surgical drape according to claim 33 further wherein said integral incision region comprises:

a transparent panel for placement of said integral incision region upon the patient surgical area; and

an adhesive attached to said transparent panel for adhesively attaching said transparent panel to the patient surgical area wherein the patient incision is made by simultaneously cutting through said transparent panel and at least a portion of the patient.

35. The surgical drape according to claim 33 wherein at least a portion of said integral incision region includes an antibiotic or antimicrobial agent.

36. The surgical drape according to claim 26 further comprising

a drain located within said first portion of the drape for collecting fluids accumulated in the continuous sterile field between the practitioner and the operating table.

37. A drape for providing at least a portion of a continuous sterile field between a practitioner and a patient surgical area comprising:

a fastening element for fastening the drape to the practitioner; and

an integral incision region for at least partially coupling the drape to the patient surgical area wherein a patient incision is made by simultaneously cutting through said integral incision region and at least a portion of the patient.

38. The drape according to claim 37 further wherein said integral incision region comprises:

a transparent panel for placement of said integral incision region upon the patient surgical area; and

an adhesive attached to said transparent panel for adhesively attaching said transparent panel to the patient surgical area wherein the patient incision is made by simultaneously cutting through said transparent panel and at least a portion of the patient.

39. The drape according to claim 37 wherein at least a portion of said integral incision region contains an antibiotic or antimicrobial agent.

40. The drape according to claim 37 wherein said drape further comprises

a separating element for enabling the practitioner to separate from the continuous sterile field with said fastening element still fastened to the practitioner.

41. The drape according to claim 40 wherein said separating element comprises a perforation within the drape allowing the practitioner to separate from the continuous sterile field by parting the drape along said perforation.

42. The drape according to claim 37 wherein said fastening element further comprises

an integral practitioner gown portion for providing at least a portion of the continuous sterile field between the practitioner and the patient surgical area.

43. The drape according to claim 42 wherein said integral practitioner gown portion is worn upon the at least the practitioner'"'"'s torso, head, arm, face or hand.

44. The drape according to claim 37 further comprising

a drain for collecting fluids accumulated in the continuous sterile field between the practitioner and the patient surgical area.

45. A drape comprising:

a first portion of the drape for facilitating a continuous sterile field between a first practitioner and an operating table having a patient positioned thereon; and

a second portion of the drape for extending the continuous sterile field to a second practitioner.

46. The drape according to claim 45 further comprising:

a first fastening element for fastening said first portion of the drape to the practitioner; and

a second fastening element for fastening said second portion of the drape to the second practitioner.

47. The drape according to claim 46 wherein said first portion of the drape further comprises

a separating element for enabling the first practitioner to separate from the continuous sterile field with said first fastening element still fastened to the first practitioner.

48. The drape according to claim 47 wherein said separating element comprises a perforation within the drape allowing the first practitioner to separate from the continuous sterile field by parting said first portion of the drape along said perforation.

49. The drape according to claim 47 wherein said second portion of the drape further comprises

a second separating element for enabling the second practitioner to separate from the continuous sterile field with said second fastening element still fastened to the second practitioner.

50. The drape according to claim 49 wherein said second separating element comprises a perforation within the drape allowing the second practitioner to separate from the continuous sterile field by parting said second portion of the drape along said perforation.

51. The drape according to claim 46 wherein said first fastening element comprises

an integral practitioner gown portion for providing the at least a portion of a sterile field between the first practitioner and the patient.

52. The drape according to claim 51 wherein said integral practitioner gown portion is worn upon at least the practitioner'"'"'s torso, head, arm, face or hand.

53. The drape according to claim 51 wherein said second fastening element further comprises

a second integral practitioner gown portion for providing at least a portion of a continuous sterile field between the second practitioner and the patient.

54. The drape according to claim 53 wherein said second integral practitioner gown portion is worn upon at least the practitioner'"'"'s torso, head, arm, face or hand of the second.

55. The drape according to claim 45 further for facilitating a continuous sterile field between the first and second practitioners and a patient surgical area, the drape further comprising

an integral incision region for at least partially coupling the drape to the patient surgical area wherein a patient incision is made by simultaneously cutting through said integral incision region and at least a portion of the patient.

56. The drape according to claim 55 wherein said integral incision region comprises:

a transparent panel for placement of said integral incision region upon the patient surgical area; and

an adhesive attached to said transparent panel for adhesively attaching said transparent panel to the patient surgical area wherein the patient incision is made by simultaneously cutting through said transparent panel and at least a portion of the patient.

57. The drape according to claim 55 wherein at least a portion of said integral incision region contains an antibiotic or antimicrobial agent.

58. A surgical drape system for providing an extended sterile field comprising:

a first portion of a drape for providing a sterile field over a patient positioned upon an operating table;

an extension portion of the drape for extending the sterile field beyond an edge of the operating table; and

a suspension device for suspending the extension portion substantially beyond the edge of the operating table.

59. The surgical drape system according to claim 58 wherein the first portion includes

an integral incision region for at least partially coupling the drape to a patient surgical area.

60. The surgical drape system according to claim 58 wherein the extension portion includes

a drain for collecting fluids accumulated in said extension portion during surgery

61. The surgical drape system to claim 58 wherein said drape is a first component of a modular surgery gown and drape system further comprising:

a separate second component of the modular surgery gown and drape system having a surgical gown extension portion for fastening to a practitioner and for further attaching to said extension portion, thereby providing a continuous sterile field between the practitioner and the patient when the second component'"'"'s surgical gown is attached to the first component'"'"'s extended portion.

62. The surgical drape system according to claim 61 further comprising

a fastener for attaching said gown extension portion to said drape extension portion.

63. The surgical drape system according to claim 61 wherein said gown extension portion is attached to said drape extension portion using a friction coupling.

64. A surgical enclosure having a sterile interior comprising:

a vent for coupling to an air handler for providing a positive air pressure within the interior;

a first portion for providing a sterile field above a patient; and

an opening for providing surgical access to the interior.

65. The surgical enclosure according to claim 64 wherein the opening includes

first and second overlapping flaps for substantially closing said opening in the absence of surgical access and for minimizing the opening size in response to a practitioner'"'"'s hand being inserted through said opening and into the interior of the enclosure.

66. The surgical enclosure according to claim 64 further comprising

at least one transparent portion for providing visibility to the interior to a practitioner exterior to the enclosure and wherein said opening further comprises

first and second overlapping flaps for substantially closing said opening in the absence of surgical access and for minimizing the opening size in response to a practitioner'"'"'s hand being inserted through said opening and into the interior of the enclosure.

67. The surgical enclosure according to claim 64 wherein said vent provides a laminar airflow over the sterile field above the patient.

68. The surgical enclosure according to claim 64 wherein the surgical enclosure is part of a surgical system including the air wherein said handler modifies the air to facilitate a surgical procedure.

69. The surgical enclosure according to claim 68 further wherein said air handler adds ions to the air to facilitate the sterile interior for a surgical procedure.

70. The surgical enclosure according to claim 68 wherein said air handler adds a thrombin mist to the air to facilitate the sterile interior for a surgical procedure.

71. The surgical enclosure according to claim 64 wherein the first portion includes

an integral incision region at least partially covering a patient surgical area wherein a patient incision is made by simultaneously cutting through said integral incision region and at least a portion of a patient.

72. The surgical enclosure according to claim 71 further wherein said integral incision region comprises:

a transparent panel for placement of said integral incision region upon the patient surgical area; and

an adhesive attached to said transparent panel for adhesively attaching said transparent panel to the patient surgical area wherein the patient incision is made by simultaneously cutting through said transparent panel and at least a portion of a patient.

73. The surgical enclosure according to claim 72 wherein at least a portion of said integral incision region contains an antibiotic or antimicrobial agent.

74. The surgical enclosure of claim 64 further comprising

a drain for collecting fluids accumulated within the interior.

75. The surgical enclosure according to claim 74 wherein said drain is either gravity fed or has active suction.

76. The surgical enclosure according to claim 74 wherein said drain includes a filter for draining fluids while retaining tissue within the interior.

77. The surgical enclosure according to claim 64 further comprising

a second portion for extending the sterile field to a second area above a second table.

78. The surgical enclosure according to claim 77 wherein said second portion facilitates placement of surgical instruments atop the second area located above the second table.

79. A portable surgical enclosure having a sterile surgical interior environment comprising:

a first portion for providing a first interior sterile field area over a patient positioned upon a first table; and

a second portion for providing a second interior sterile field area over a second table.

80. The portable surgical enclosure according to claim 79 wherein said second portion facilitates placement of surgical instruments atop the second interior sterile field area located over the second table.

81. The portable surgical enclosure according to claim 79 further comprising:

a vent for coupling the enclosure to an air handler for providing a positive pressure to the interior of the enclosure; and

a closable opening for facilitating surgical access to the interior of the enclosure while minimizing reduction of the positive pressure.

82. The portable surgical enclosure according to claim 79 further comprising

a drain for collecting fluids accumulated within the interior

84. The portable surgical enclosure according to claim 82 wherein said drain is either gravity fed or has active suction.

83. A portable surgical enclosure having a sterile surgical interior environment comprising:

a first portion for providing a first interior sterile field over a patient positioned upon a first table; and

a drain for collecting fluids accumulated within the interior.

85. The portable surgical enclosure according to claim 83 wherein said drain includes a filter for draining fluids while retaining tissue within the interior.

86. The portable surgical enclosure according to claim 83 further comprising:

a vent for coupling the enclosure to an air handler for providing a positive pressure to the interior of the enclosure; and

a closable opening for facilitating surgical access to the interior of the enclosure while minimizing reduction of the positive pressure.

87. The portable surgical enclosure according to claim 83 further comprising

a second portion for providing a second interior sterile field over a second table.

88. An illuminating surgical glove comprising:

a surgical glove having a sterile exterior surface; and

a light integral to said surgical glove for providing illumination during surgery.

89. The glove according to claim 88 further comprising

a power source integral to the surgical glove for providing power to said light.

90. The glove according to claim 88 wherein said light comprises an organic light emitting device.

91. The glove according to claim 88 wherein said light comprises an incandescent lamp.

92. The glove according to claim 88 wherein

said surgical glove is comprised of a material that is substantially light transmissive and has a sterile outer surface;

and

said light is positioned on an inner surface of the glove and radiates light through the substantially light transmissive material of the glove.

93. The glove according to claim 92 further comprising

a power source integral to the surgical glove for providing power to said light, wherein

said power source is positioned on the inner surface of the glove, thereby providing a disposable self contained illuminating surgical glove having a sterile outer surface.

94. The glove according to claim 88 wherein said light is located upon at least one finger tip of the glove.

95. The glove according to claim 88 wherein said light is located upon a palm surface of the glove.

96. The glove according to claim 95 wherein said light is comprised of a flexible illuminating panel disposed upon the palm surface of the glove.

97. The glove according to claim 96 wherein the flexible illuminating panel includes an organic light emitting device.

98. An illuminating surgical drape comprising:

a surgical drape; and

a light integral to said surgical drape for providing illumination during surgery.

99. The surgical drape according to claim 98 further comprising

a fenestration through which surgery is performed and wherein

said light illuminates said fenestration.

100. The surgical drape according to claim 98 wherein said light is comprised within a flexible illuminating panel disposed upon said surgical drape.

101. The surgical drape according to claim 100 wherein said flexible illuminating panel includes an organic light emitting device and has a sterile surface.

103. An illuminated surgical enclosure comprising:

a mobile surgical enclosure;

a light integral to said enclosure for providing light to the interior of said enclosure during surgery.

104. The enclosure according to claim 103 further comprising

a fenestration through which surgery is performed and wherein

said light illuminates said fenestration.

105. The enclosure according to claim 103 wherein said light is comprised within a flexible illuminating panel disposed upon an inner surface of said enclosure.

106. The enclosure according to claim 105 wherein said flexible illuminating panel includes an organic light emitting device and has a sterile surface.

107. A surgical drape displaying information comprising:

a drape; and

an information display integrated into said drape for displaying information during surgery.

108. The drape according to claim 107 wherein said information display is comprised within a flexible display panel located upon a sterile surface of said drape.

109. The drape according to claim 108 wherein said flexible display panel includes an organic light emitting devices and has a sterile surface.

110. A surgical enclosure for displaying information comprising:

a mobile surgical enclosure; and

an information display integrated onto an interior surface of said enclosure for displaying information during surgery.

111. The enclosure according to claim 110 wherein said information display is comprised within a flexible display panel.
