Abstract

A system and method are provided by which a wireless network service provider is able to provide and maintain a high level of quality of service for terminals in the corresponding network, by overcoming problems that result in a diminished quality of service, including handoff delays as terminals move between cells in a network and the uncertainly as to which cell the individual terminals are moving to as they roam within the network. Providing and maintaining a high level of quality of service in a wireless network includes recording a history of movements of a terminal within the wireless network, analyzing the movements of the terminal within the wireless network to compute a probability distribution of the terminal'"'"'s target location, and allocating network resources, including bandwidth and priority scheme, to the terminal based on the probability distribution for the terminal.

Claims

1. A method of managing quality service for a terminal connected to a present cell in a network, comprising:

recording a history of movements of said terminal in said network;

predicting a target cell for said terminal in said network; and

allocating network resources from said target cell to said terminal.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein said recording is performed by a geographic location manager that receives satellite-based positioning information regarding said terminal.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein said recording further includes storing the recorded history of movements in a database in said network.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein said recording includes performing a statistical analysis of the movements of said terminal in said network.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein said statistical analysis of the movement of said terminal in said network includes computing a mobility matrix regarding the movements of said terminal among adjacent cells for each cell in said network.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein said statistical analysis is updated when said terminal moves to an adjacent cell in said network.

7. The method of claim 5, wherein said mobility matrix includes a statistical analysis of the movement of plural terminals in said network.

8. The method of claim 5, wherein said mobility matrix is computed for movements of said terminal at predetermined time intervals.

9. The method of claim 5, wherein said predicting includes performing a hypothesis analysis of cells adjacent to said present cell based on said mobility matrix.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein said target cell is the one of the adjacent cells that has the maximum value of the hypothesis analysis.

11. A system for managing quality of service for a terminal connected to a present cell in a network, comprising:

a database that records a history of usage of said terminal and predicts a target cell for said terminal in said network; and

a network entity in the present cell that informs the target cell of resources requirements of said terminal.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein said database is a global location manger that receives satellite-based positioning information regarding said terminal.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein said database computes a statistical analysis of movements of said terminal in said network.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein said database computess said statistical analysis by computing a mobility matrix regarding the movements of said terminal among adjacent cells for each cell in said network.

15. The system of claim 13, wherein the statistical analysis is updated in said database when said terminal moves to a cell that is adjacent to said present cell in said network.

16. The system of claim 14, wherein said mobility matrix includes a statistical analysis of the movement of plural terminals in said network.

17. The system of claim 14, wherein said database computes the mobility matrix for said terminal at predetermined time intervals.

18. The system of claim 14, wherein said database predicts a target cell for said terminal in said network by performing a hypothesis analysis of cells adjacent to said present cell based on said mobility matrix.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein said target cell is the one of the adjacent cells that has the maximum value of the hypothesis analysis.

20. A computer-readable medium having computer-executable instructions for managing quality service for a terminal connected to a present cell in a network, said computer-executable instructions comprising:

recording a history of movements of said terminal in said network;

predicting a target cell for said terminal in said network; and

allocating network resources from said target cell to said terminal.

21. The computer-executable instructions of claim 20, wherein said recording is performed by a geographical location manager that collects satellite-based positioning information regarding said terminal.

22. The computer-executable instructions of claim 21, wherein the recorded history of the movements of said terminal is stored in a network database.

23. The computer-executable instructions of claim 21, wherein said recording includes performing a statistical analysis of the movement of said terminal in said network.

24. The computer-executable instructions of claim 23, wherein said statistical analysis of the movement of said terminal in said network includes computing a mobility matrix regarding the mobility of said terminal among adjacent cells for each cell in said network.

25. The computer-executable instructions of claim 23, wherein said statistical analysis is updated when said terminal moves to an adjacent cell in said network.

26. The computer-executable instructions of claim 24, wherein said mobility matrix includes a statistical analysis of plural terminal in said network.

27. The computer-executable instructions of claim 24, wherein said mobility matrix is computed for movements of said terminal at predetermined time intervals.

28. The computer-executable instructions of claim 24, wherein said predicting includes performing a hypothesis analysis of cells adjacent to said present cell based on said mobility matrix.

29. The computer-executable instructions of claim 28, wherein said target cell is the one of the adjacent cells that has the maximum value of the hypothesis analysis.
