Abstract

An unambiguous romanization system is provided. A look-up table having a unique and unambiguous correspondence between individual characters of Korean language having Korean language vowels and Korean language consonants, and syllables of English language having English language vowels and English language consonants is implemented into the computerized romanization system. The table is constructed to assure phonetic fidelity between pronunciation of the individual syllables of Korean language and the syllables of English syllables of English language. The system includes a key board, a microprocessor coupled to the key board and receives syllables of English language, a first memory connected to the processor and having the look-up table storing the correspondence, and the microprocessor converting syllables of English language into syllables of Korean language or converting syllables of Korean language inot syllables of English language with the uniqueness, the unambiguity, and the phonetic fidelity.

Claims

1. A romanization system, comprising:

an input device inputting Korean consonant and vowel of Korean syllables of Korean language and English syllables of English language;

a controller coupled to said input device, said controller converting said Korean syllables into said English syllables and converting said English syllables into said Korean syllables, said controller having a lookup table showing a unique and unambiguous assignment between individual Korean consonants and vowels of Korean language and syllables of English language, with said table being constructed to assure phonetic fidelity between pronunciation of said individual syllables of Korean language and said syllables of English language;

said look-up table comprising assigned to G. assigned to N, assigned to D, assigned to R or L, assigned to M, assigned to B, assigned to S, assigned to NG, assigned to J, assigned to CH, assigned to K, assigned to T, assigned to P, assigned to H; and

said look-up table comprising assigned to a, assigned to YA, assigned to U, assigned to YU, assigned to O, assigned to YO, assigned to OO assigned to YOO,

assigned to EU, assigned to I, assigned to AE, assigned to YAE assigned to E, assigned to AE, assigned to WA, assigned to WAE, assigned to OE, assigned to WO, assigned to WE assigned to WI, and assigned to UI.

2. An input apparatus in a romanization system, comprising:

a keyboard comprised of a plurality of keys each representing a different English language character;

a memory having a look-up table showing a unique and unambiguous correspondence between individual Korean consonants and vowels of Korean language and syllables of English language, with said table being constructed to assure phonetic fidelity between pronunciation of said individual syllables of Korean language and said syllables of English language;

a microprocessor connected to said keyboard and said memory, receiving via said keyboard, a first group comprised of syllables of said English language, automatically converting said first group of said syllables of said English language into a first corresponding group comprised of said individual Korean consonants and vowels of said Korean language corresponding to said each syllables of said English language in accordance with said look-up table.

The input apparatus of claim 2, with said look-up table comprising assigned to G, assigned to N, assigned to D, assigned to R or L, assigned to M, assigned to B, assigned to S, assigned to NG, assigned to J, assigned to CH, assigned to K, assigned to T, assigned to P, assigned to H, said look-up table comprising assigned to A, assigned to YA, assigned to U, assigned to YU, assigned to O, A assigned to YO, T assigned to OO, IT assigned to YOO, assigned to EU, I assigned to I, N assigned to AE, assigned to YAE, assigned to E, assigned to YE, assigned to WA, assigned to WAE, assigned to OE, assigned to WO, assigned to WE, assigned to WI, and assigned to UI.

4. The input apparatus of claim 2, with said microprocessor converting said first group of said syllables of said English language into a corresponding group of said individual Korean consonants and vowels of Korean language in accordance with said look-up table when said first group of said syllables of said English language is followed by a space key stroke.

5. The input apparatus of claim 3, with said microprocessor storing the “

source”

passage of either said first group or said corresponding group into said memory.

6. The input apparatus of claim 3, with said microprocessor displaying said “

source”

group of said syllables of said English language on a screen of a monitor coupled to said microprocessor.

7. The input apparatus of claim 5, with said microprocessor displaying said corresponding group of said individual Korean consonants and vowels of Korean language on said screen.

8. The input apparatus of claim 6, wherein said corresponding group of said individual Korean consonants and vowels of Korean language replaces the first group of said syllables of said English language on said screen of said monitor while said displaced first group of said syllables of said English language is erased from said screen.

9. The input apparatus of claim 2, with said microprocessor receiving a second group comprised of syllables of said English language, automatically converting said second group of said syllables of said English language into a second corresponding group comprised of said individual Korean consonants and vowels of said Korean language corresponding to said each syllables of said second group of said English language in accordance with said look-up table.

10. The input apparatus of claim 8, with said microprocessor converting said second group of said syllables of said English language into a second corresponding group of said individual Korean consonants and vowels of Korean language in accordance with said look-up table when said second group of said syllables of said English language is followed by a space key stroke.

11. The input apparatus of claim 10, with said microprocessor storing any one of said first group, said first corresponding group, said second, and said second corresponding group into said memory.

12. The input apparatus of claim 10, with said microprocessor displaying said first corresponding group of said individual Korean consonants and vowels of said Korean language on a screen of a monitor coupled to said microprocessor.

13. The input apparatus of claim 12, with said microprocessor displaying said second group of said syllables of said English language adjacent to said first corresponding group of said individual Korean consonants and vowels of said Korean language on said screen.

14. The input apparatus of claim 12, with said microprocessor displaying said second corresponding group of said individual Korean consonants and vowels of Korean language on said screen.

15. The input apparatus of claim 14, wherein said second corresponding group of said individual Korean consonants and vowels of Korean language is displaced in the place of said displaced second group of said syllables of said English language on said screen of said monitor.

16. The input apparatus of claim 14, wherein said second corresponding group of said individual Korean consonants and vowels of Korean language is displaced adjacent to said displaced first corresponding group of individual Korean consonants and vowels of Korean language.

17. The input apparatus of claim 16, wherein there is a space between said second corresponding group and said first corresponding group.

18. A transliteration apparatus, comprising:

a keyboard comprised of a plurality of keys each representing a different English language character;

a memory having a lookup table showing a unique and unambiguous correspondence between individual syllables of Korean language comprised of Korean language vowels and Korean language consonants, and syllables of English language comprised of English language vowels and English language consonants, with said table being constructed to assure phonetic fidelity between pronunciation of said individual syllables of Korean language and said syllables of English language;

said memory storing a Korean passage comprised of serial group of said Korean language having Korean language consonants and Korean language vowels; and

a microprocessor connected to said keyboard and said memory, converting said Korean passage comprised of serial groups of Korean language into an English passage of said syllable of English language in accordance with said look-up table.

19. The apparatus of claim 18, with said microprocessor displaying said Korean passage on a screen of a monitor connected to said microprocessor.

20. The apparatus of claim 19, with said microprocessor selecting portions of said Korean passage and automatically converting selected said portions of said Korean passage into said syllables of said English language in correspondence with said look-up table.

21. The apparatus of claim 19, with said microprocessor displaying selected said portions of said Korean passage on said screen.

22. The apparatus of claim 18, with said microprocessor distinguishing each of said serial groups from others of said serial groups by the presency of a space key stroke inserted between each of said serial group.

23. The apparatus of claim 22, with said microprocessor converting distinguished said each of said serial group into one of said individual syllables of English language in accordance with said look-up table.

24. The apparatus of claim 23, with said microprocessor displaying said one of said individual syllables of English language on said screen.

25. The apparatus of claim 18, with said microprocessor automatically converting each of said serial groups of Korean language into said English passage of English language in accordance with said look-up table in response to a space key stroke.

26. A transliteration apparatus, comprising:

a keyboard comprised of a plurality of keys each representing a different English language character;

a memory having a lookup table showing a unique and unambiguous correspondence between individual syllables of Korean language comprised of Korean language vowels and Korean language consonants, and syllables of English language comprised of English language vowels and English language consonants, with said table being constructed to assure phonetic fidelity between pronunciation of said individual syllables of Korean language and said syllables of English language;

said memory storing an English passage comprised of serial groups of one or more keystrokes of said English language characters with each of said groups comprising selected said syllables of English language; and

a microprocessor connected to said memory and said keyboard, automatically converting each of said serial groups of English language characters into a corresponding Korean passage in Korean language having said individual syllables of Korean language in accordance with said look-up table.

27. The apparatus of claim 26, with said microprocessor selecting portions of said English passage and automatically converting selected said portions of said English passage into said syllables of Korean language in correspondence with said look-up table.

28. The apparatus of claim 26, with said microprocessor distinguishing each of said serial groups from others of said serial groups by the presency of a space key stroke inserted between each of said serial group.

29. The apparatus of claim 28, with said microprocessor converting distinguished said each of said serial group into one of said individual syllables of Korean language in accordance with said look-up table.

30. The apparatus of claim 28, with said microprocessor automatically converting each of said serial groups of English language characters into said corresponding Korean passage of Korean language having said individual Korean consonant and vowel of Korean syllables in accordance with said look-up table in response to a space key stroke.

31. A transliteration apparatus in a romanization system, comprising:

a keyboard comprised of a plurality of keys each representing a different English language character;

a memory having a lookup table showing a unique and unambiguous correspondence between individual syllables of Korean language comprised of Korean language vowels and Korean language consonants, and syllables of English language comprised of English language vowels and English language consonants, with said table being constructed to assure phonetic fidelity between pronunciation of said individual syllables of Korean language and said syllables of English language;

a microprocessor connected to said keyboard and said memory, receiving via said keyboard, an Korean passage comprised of serial groups of one or more keystrokes of said English language characters with each of said groups comprising selected said syllables of English language; and

said microprocessor automatically converting each of said serial groups of English language characters into a corresponding English passage in Korean language having said individual syllables of Korean language in accordance with said look-up table.

32. A romanization method, comprising the steps of:

providing a microprocessor and a memory storing a lookup table showing a unique and unambiguous correspondence between individual syllables of Korean with said syllables of Korean language comprised of Korean language vowels and Korean language consonants, and syllables of English language comprised of English language vowels and English language consonants, with said table being constructed to assure phonetic fidelity between pronunciation of said individual syllables of Korean language and said syllables of English syllables of English language;

entering via said keyboard, a group of English language characters; and

forming a second group of said individual syllables of said Korean language by instructing said microprocessor to automatically convert said group of English language characters into said individual syllables of Korean language in accordance with said look-up table.

33. The method of claim 32, wherein said group of English language characters is converted into said individual syllables of Korean language when said group of English language characters is followed by a space key input.

The method of claim 32, further comprising the step of providing a keyboard comprised of a plurality of keys each representing a different English language character, a microprocessor connected to said keyboard, and a memory that is addressable by said microprocessor, and a video display device driven by said microprocessor to display variable image.

35. The method of claim 34, further comprising the step of providing a visual display on said video display device of either said first group of said English language characters or said second group of said individual syllables of Korean language.

36. A romanization method, comprising the steps of:

providing a microprocessor and a memory storing a lookup table showing a unique and unambiguous correspondence between individual syllables of Korean with said syllables of Korean language comprised of Korean language vowels and Korean language consonants, and syllables of English language comprised of English language vowels and English language consonants, with said table being constructed to assure phonetic fidelity between pronunciation of said individual syllables of Korean language and said syllables of English syllables of English language;

providing a first passage comprised of serial groups of said syllables of said Korean language vowels and said Korean language consonants;

selecting a portion of said first passage; and

forming a second passage of said syllables of said English language by instructing said microprocessor to automatically convert said first passage of said serial groups of said Korean language into said syllables of said English language in accordance with said look-up table.

37. The method of claim 36, comprising the step of providing a visual display on said video display device of either said portion of said first passage or said second passage comprised of said individual syllables of Korean language.

38. The method of claim 36, comprising the step of distinguishing each of said serial groups from others of said serial groups of said syllables of by a presence of a space key stroke inserted between each of said serial groups.
