Abstract

The table saw disclosed herein includes a table, a saw assembly pivotally attached to the table, the saw assembly comprising an arbor movable relative to the table, a bevel shaft operatively connected to the saw assembly for pivoting the saw assembly, and a height shaft operatively connected to the saw assembly for moving the arbor relative to the table, wherein distance between the height shaft and the table is larger than distance between the bevel shaft and the table. Also disclosed is a saw includes a table having a first miter gauge slot, a base supporting the table, a saw assembly pivotably connected to at least one of the table and the base for carrying a rotatable cutting tool so that the tool protrudes through and above the table, at least part of the saw assembly being underneath the table, the saw assembly comprising a cradle, and a sector gear connected to the cradle, and a first bevel stop disposed underneath the first miter gauge slot, wherein the first bevel stop can contact the sector gear when the saw assembly is pivoted in one direction.

Claims

1. A table saw comprising:

a table;

a saw assembly pivotally attached to the table, the saw assembly comprising an arbor movable relative to the table;

a bevel shaft operatively connected to the saw assembly for pivoting the saw assembly; and

a height shaft operatively connected to the saw assembly for moving the arbor relative to the table;

wherein distance between the height shaft and the table is larger than distance between the bevel shaft and the table.

2. The table saw of claim 1, further comprising a rotatable cutting tool supported by the arbor.

3. A saw comprising:

a table;

a base supporting the table;

a saw assembly pivotably connected to at least one of the table and the base for carrying a rotatable cutting tool so that the tool protrudes through and above the table, at least part of the saw assembly being underneath the table, the saw assembly comprising a cradle, an arbor bracket pivotally connected to the cradle, an arbor rotatably supported by the arbor bracket, and a sector gear connected to the cradle;

a height adjustment shaft supported by the cradle and contacting the arbor bracket; and

a bevel adjustment shaft supported by the cradle and contacting the sector gear.

4. The saw of claim 3, further comprising a cover attached to the cradle.

5. The saw of claim 3, wherein the height adjustment shaft has a gear meshing with the arbor bracket.

6. The saw of claim 3, wherein the height adjustment shaft has a worm drive, and the arbor bracket has a rack meshing with the worm drive.

7. The saw of claim 3, wherein the bevel adjustment shaft has a gear meshing with the sector gear.

8. The saw of claim 3, wherein the bevel adjustment shaft has a worm drive, and the sector gear has a rack meshing with the worm drive.

9. The saw of claim 3, wherein distance between the height adjustment shaft and the table is larger than distance between the bevel adjustment shaft and the table.

10. The saw of claim 3, further comprising a motor bracket connected to the cradle for supporting a motor.

11. The saw of claim 10, wherein the motor bracket is pivotally connected to the cradle.

12. The saw of claim 10, further comprising a spring disposed between the cradle and the motor bracket for biasing the motor bracket away from the cradle.

13. The saw of claim 10, further comprising a spring connected to the motor bracket for biasing the motor bracket away from the cradle.

14. The saw of claim 3, wherein the saw assembly further comprises a motor supported by the cradle.

15. The saw of claim 14, wherein the motor is operatively connected to the arbor.

16. The saw of claim 14, wherein the motor has a drive shaft connected to the arbor via a belt.

17. The saw of claim 3, further comprising a pulley connected to the arbor.

18. The saw of claim 17, wherein the pulley is constructed of two halves.

19. The saw of claim 17, wherein the pulley is made of powdered metal.

20. The saw of claim 3, further comprising a first bevel stop disposed underneath the table, wherein the first bevel stop can contact the sector gear when the saw assembly is pivoted in one direction.

21. The saw of claim 20, wherein the first bevel stop is adjustable.

22. The saw of claim 20, wherein the first bevel stop is adjustable from above the table.

23. The saw of claim 20, wherein the first bevel stop is movable between first and second positions, where, in the first position, the first bevel stop contacts the sector gear and, in the second position, the first bevel stop bypasses the sector gear.

24. A saw comprising:

a table having a first miter gauge slot;

a base supporting the table;

a saw assembly pivotably connected to at least one of the table and the base for carrying a rotatable cutting tool so that the tool protrudes through and above the table, at least part of the saw assembly being underneath the table, the saw assembly comprising a cradle, and a sector gear connected to the cradle; and

a first bevel stop disposed underneath the first miter gauge slot, wherein the first bevel stop can contact the sector gear when the saw assembly is pivoted in one direction.

25. The saw of claim 24, wherein the table comprises a second miter gauge slot.

26. The saw of claim 25, further comprising a second bevel stop disposed underneath the second miter gauge slot, wherein the second bevel stop can contact the sector gear when the saw assembly is pivoted in the other direction.

27. The saw of claim 24, wherein the first bevel stop is adjustable.

28. The saw of claim 24, wherein the first bevel stop is adjustable from above the table.

29. The saw of claim 24, wherein the first bevel stop is movable between first and second positions, where, in the first position, the first bevel stop contacts the sector gear and, in the second position, the first bevel stop bypasses the sector gear.

30. A saw comprising:

a table;

a base supporting the table, the base comprising a front panel with a slot;

a saw assembly pivotably connected to at least one of the table and the base for carrying a rotatable cutting tool so that the tool protrudes through and above the table, at least part of the saw assembly being underneath the table;

a height adjustment shaft connected to the saw assembly for changing height of the cutting tool, the shaft extending through the slot; and

a first piece surrounding at least part of the shaft and partly covering the the slot.

31. The saw of claim 30, wherein the slot has top and bottom parts, the first piece is a resilient piece disposed to cover the top part of the slot, and further comprising a second resilient piece disposed to cover the bottom part of the slot.

32. The saw of claim 30, wherein the first piece complete surrounds the shaft and complete covers the slot.

34. The saw of claim 30, wherein the first piece has a first slot that engages a first boss disposed on the panel, so as to cause movement of the first piece when the shaft is moved.

35. The saw of claim 34, further comprising a second piece having a second slot that engages a second boss disposed on the panel, so as to cause movement of the second piece when the shaft is moved, wherein the first and second pieces move in conjunction to cover the slot.

36. The saw of claim 30, wherein the first piece to a plurality of linked plates.

37. The saw of claim 30, wherein the first piece is spring loaded.

38. The saw of claim 30, wherein the first piece slides along a track.

33. The saw of claim 33, wherein the first piece is a resilient piece slidably disposed in a channel.

39. A saw comprising:

a table;

a base supporting the table, the base comprising a front panel with a slot;

a saw assembly pivotably connected to at least one of the table and the base for carrying a rotatable cutting tool so that the tool protrudes through and above the table, at least part of the saw assembly being underneath the table;

one of the panel and the saw assembly supporting a fixed stop and the other of the panel and the saw assembly supporting a movable stop movable between a first position bypassing the fixed stop and a second position contacting the second stop.

40. The saw of claim 39, wherein the movable stop is biased towards the second position.

41. The saw of claim 39, wherein the movable stop moves along an axis substantially parallel to the table.

42. The saw of claim 39, wherein the movable stop rotates about an axis substantially parallel to the panel.

43. The saw of claim 39, wherein the movable stop is a detent.

44. A saw comprising:

a table;

a base supporting the table, the base comprising a front panel with a slot;

a saw assembly pivotably connected to at least one of the table and the base for carrying a rotatable cutting tool so that the tool protrudes through and above the table, at least part of the saw assembly being underneath the table;

a trunnion bracket disposed on the at least one of the table and the bracket slidably receiving a track disposed on the saw assembly;

one of the trunnion bracket and the track having at least one detent recess, and the other of the trunnion bracket and track supporting a detent.

45. The saw of claim 44, wherein the detent is spring-biased towards the detent recess.

46. A method of manufacturing a saw:

providing a table and a base for supporting the table;

providing a trunnion bracket on at least one of the table and the base;

providing a saw assembly pivotably attached to the trunnion bracket; and

disposing a shim between the trunnion bracket and the at least one of the table and the base.

47. A saw comprising:

a table;

a base supporting the table, comprising a panel;

a saw assembly pivotably connected to at least one of the table and the base for carrying a rotatable cutting tool so that the tool protrudes through and above the table, at least part of the saw assembly being underneath the table,

an adjustment shaft supported by the saw assembly and protruding from the panel, the shaft having a worm gear at one end and threads near the other other end;

a locking knob threadingly engaged to the shaft; and

a crank connected to the shaft and disposed between the locking knob and the saw assembly.

48. The saw of claim 47, wherein the crank is connected to the shaft via a pin.

49. The saw of claim 47, further comprising a bevel pointer assembly connected to the saw assembly and extending through the panel.

50. The saw of claim 49, wherein the bevel pointer assembly comprises a shaft connected to the saw assembly, the shaft having a longitudinal axis, and a pointer disposed on the shaft, the pointer being rotatable about the longitudinal axis of the shaft and movable relative to the panel along the longitudinal axis of the shaft.
