Abstract

A signal processor which acquires a first signal, including a first desired signal portion and a first undesired signal portion, and a second signal, including a second desired signal portion and a second undesired signal portion, wherein the first and second desired signal portions are correlated. The signals may be acquired by propagating energy through a medium and measuring an attenuated signal after transmission or reflection. Alternatively, the signals may be acquired by measuring energy generated by the medium. A processor of the present invention generates a noise reference signal that is a combination of the undesired signal portions and is correlated to both the first and second undesired signal portions. The noise reference signal is then used to remove the undesired portion of each of the first and second measured signals. The processor of the present invention may be employed in physiological monitors wherein the known properties of energy attenuation through a medium are used to determine physiological characteristics of the medium. Many physiological conditions, such as the pulse of a patient or the concentration of a constituent in a medium, can be determined from the desired portion of the signal after undesired signal portions, such as those caused by erratic motion, are removed.

Claims

1. A method for physiological monitoring, comprising:

acquiring a first signal comprising a first desired signal component and a first noise component and a second signal comprising a second desired signal component and a second noise component;

transforming said first and second signals to produce transformed signals wherein at least the first desired signal components and the first noise components are combined by addition; and

removing at least a substantial portion of motion-induced noise from the transformed signals.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein said removing comprises an additive relationship.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein said removing further comprises an adaptive algorithm.

4. A pulse oximeter comprising:

at least first and second light emitting devices;

at least one light detector configured to receive light attenuated by transmission through body tissue with pulsing blood, the at least one light detector generating a first signal based on light transmitted from the first light emitting device, and a second signal based on light transmitted from the second light emitting device;

a signal transformer for transforming at least said first signal to produce a first transformed signal wherein a first desired signal component and a first noise component of said first transformed signal are combined by addition; and

at least one processor that processes at least the first transformed desired signal component and first noise component to produce an output signal that approximates the first desired signal component and the second desired signal component, and which computes oxygen saturation.

5. The pulse oximeter of claim 4, wherein the at least one processor comprises a least squares algorithm.

6. The pulse oximeter of claim 5, wherein the at least one processor comprises an adaptive noise canceller.

7. The pulse oximeter of claim 6, wherein the at least one processor comprises a least squares lattice.

8. The pulse oximeter of claim 7, further comprising a display to display the oxygen saturation.

9. A method of calculating blood oxygen saturation comprising:

transmitting light of at least first and second wavelengths through body tissue carrying pulsing blood to a light-sensitive detector to generate first and second intensity signals;

digitizing the first and second intensity signals;

transforming said digitized first and second intensity signals such that a first plurality of components of said digitized first intensity signal are combined by addition and a second plurality of components of said digitized second intensity signal are combined by addition;

processing said first and second plurality of components to provide first and second processed output signals, wherein the processing comprises improving at least one of said first or second processed output signals to reduce undesired components; and

calculating oxygen saturation based upon said first and second processed output signals.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein said processing comprises executing a least squares algorithm to convergence.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein said processing comprises executing an error reducing algorithm to convergence.

12. The method of claim 9, wherein said processing comprises executing a least squares lattice.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the least squares lattice is a component of an adaptive noise canceller.

14. The method of claim 9, further comprising displaying the oxygen saturation.

15. A method of determining blood oxygen saturation comprising:

transmitting light of at least first and second wavelengths through body tissue carrying pulsing blood to a light-sensitive detector to generate at least one intensity signal; and

calculating oxygen saturation based upon a principle that the oxygen saturation changes relatively slowly over short periods of time.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein the calculation occurs during the presence of motion-induced noise in the intensity signal.1
