Abstract
In consumer electronics appliances, such as, in particular, television receivers and video recorders, it is known practice to simplify operation using a so-called menu which is displayed on the screen and sets up a dialogue between the appliance and the user. The scope and level of difficulty for utilizing such menus can differ very greatly. A particular menu may be far too complicated for the inexperienced user, and yet may be too simple for the experienced user. It is therefore known practice to provide the appliance with means which the user can use to modify the menu and match it to the respective requirements of the user. Such a change to a menu by removing or adding menu items again requires a certain level of competence, however.
