Abstract

The invention relates to a method and system of displaying stereoscopic images. The method comprises displaying at least one stereoscopic image on a set of display device, the stereoscopic image comprising a pair of two-dimensional plane images. The method also comprises providing the distance (W_a) between the center points of a viewer'"'"'s eyes. The method also comprises moving the two-dimensional images displayed on each of the display device such that the W_a value is substantially the same as the distance (W_d) between the center points of the displayed images.

Claims

1. A method of displaying stereoscopic images, comprising:

displaying at least one stereoscopic image on a set of display device, the stereoscopic image comprising a pair of two-dimensional plane images;

providing the distance (W_a) between the center points of a viewer'"'"'s eyes; and

moving the two-dimensional images displayed on each of the display device such that the W_a value is substantially the same as the distance (W_d) between the center points of the displayed images.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising initializing and storing the W_d value of the displayed images.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the providing of the distance (W_a) comprises detecting the W_a value of a viewer.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the detecting is performed using an eye motion detection device.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising providing a viewing point structure defining two openings for a viewer'"'"'s eyes to be placed, each opening being substantially orthogonal to the screen of each of the display devices, respectively:

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising producing the stereoscopic image from three-dimensional structural data.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the set of display device comprises a unitary display device adapted to sequentially the two-dimensional plane images.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the set of display device comprises a pair of display devices configured to display simultaneously the two-dimensional plane images, respectively.

12. The system of claim 8, further comprising:

a receiver configured to receive three-dimensional structural data; and

a set of projection portions configured to produce at least one stereoscopic image from the three-dimensional structural data and provide the image to the set of display portions, respectively.

9. A system for displaying stereoscopic images, comprising:

a set of display portions configured to display at least one stereoscopic image, the stereoscopic image comprising a pair of two-dimensional plane images;

an input device configured to provide the distance (W_a) between the center points of a viewer'"'"'s eyes;

a computing device configured to determine an amount of movement for the two-dimensional plane images displayed on each of the display devices based on the W_a value such that the W_a value is substantially the same as the distance (W_d) between the center points of the displayed images; and

a display driver configured to move the displayed images based on the determined amount of movement.

10. The system of claim 9, wherein the computing device is configured to initialize and store the W_d value between the center points of the displayed images.

The system of claim 9, further comprising a V shaped mirror located between the display portions, wherein each of the display portions is opposing each other and comprises a set of inverting portions configured to invert the left and right sides of the two-dimensional plane images so as to output inverted images, and wherein the V shaped mirror is configured to reflect the inverted images to the viewer.

13. A method of displaying stereoscopic images, comprising:

displaying at least one stereoscopic image on a set of display devices, the stereoscopic image comprising a pair of two-dimensional plane images;

determining the distance (W_d) between the center points of the displayed two-dimensional plane images;

providing the distance (W_a) between the center points of a viewer'"'"'s eyes; and

moving the display devices such that the W_d value is substantially the same as the W_a value.

14. The method of claim 13, further comprising providing a viewing point structure defining two openings for a viewer'"'"'s eyes to be placed, each opening being substantially orthogonal to a screen of each of the display devices, respectively.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein the providing of the distance (W_a) comprises detecting the W_a value of a viewer.

16. The method of claim 13, further comprising producing the stereoscopic image from three-dimensional structural data.

17. A system for displaying stereoscopic images, comprising:

a set of display devices configured to display at least one stereoscopic image, the stereoscopic image comprising a pair of two-dimensional plane images;

a computing device configured to receive the distance (W_a) between the center points of a viewer'"'"'s eyes and determine an amount of movement for the two-dimensional plane images displayed on each of the display devices based on the W_a value such that the W_a value is substantially the same as the distance between the center points of the displayed images; and

a servo mechanism configured to move the display devices based on the determined amount of movement.

18. The system of claim 17, further comprising an input device configured to provide the W_a value of a viewer to the computing device.

19. The system of claim 17, further comprising an eye motion detector configured to detect the distance (W_a) of a viewer and provide the W_a value to the computing device.

20. The system of claim 17, wherein the display devices are selected from one of the following:

a head mount display and a set of projection display devices, a set of LCD devices, a set of CRT devices, and a set of plasma display panel devices.

21. The system of claim 17, further comprising:

a receiver configured to receive three-dimensional structural data; and

a set of projection portions configured to produce at least one stereoscopic image from the three-dimensional structural data and provide the image to the set of display portions, respectively.

22. A system for displaying stereoscopic images, comprising:

means for displaying at least one stereoscopic image on a set of display device, the stereoscopic image comprising a pair of two-dimensional plane images;

means for providing the distance (W_a) between the center points of a viewer'"'"'s eyes; and

means for moving the two-dimensional images displayed on each of the display device such that the W_a value is substantially the same as the distance (W_d) between the center points of the displayed images.
