1. An isolated nucleic acid encoding a functional MC5R, or the complement thereof, said nucleic acid comprising a nucleotide sequence selected from the group consisting of:

  • (a) a nucleotide sequence which hybridizes under conditions of moderate stringency to the coding region of SEQ ID NO;

    1;

    (b) a nucleotide sequence which hybridizes under conditions of moderate stringency to a polynucleotide which is complementary to the coding region of SEQ ID NO;

    1;

    (c) a nucleotide sequence which hybridizes under conditions of moderate stringency to the coding region of the canine MC5R as deposited with the ATCC and having ATCC Accession No. PTA-3455; and

    (d) a nucleotide sequence which hybridizes under conditions of moderate stringency to a polynucleotide which is complementary to the coding region of the canine MC5R as deposited with the ATCC and having ATCC Accession No. PTA-3455, with the proviso that said functional MC5R is not human, bovine, chimpanzee, murine, rat, chicken or swine.
