Abstract

A protective drainage wrap comprises a first portion and a second portion. The first portion comprises cross-woven or cross-laminate material in the machine direction and in the transverse direction. The material in the machine direction comprises a polyolefin, polyester, nylon or combinations thereof and has a first thickness. The material in the transverse direction comprises a polyolefin, polyester, nylon or combinations thereof and has a second thickness. The second thickness is at least about 2 times greater than the first thickness so as to assist in providing drainage for moisture build-up. The second portion is a coating comprising a polyolefin, polyester, nylon or combinations thereof. The first and second portions are located adjacent to each other. According to one embodiment, the material in the transverse direction is yarn.

Claims

1. A protective drainage wrap comprising:

a first portion comprising cross-woven or cross-laminate material in the machine direction and in the transverse direction, the material in the machine direction comprising a polyolefin, polyester, nylon or combinations thereof, the machine direction material having a first thickness, the material in the transverse direction comprising a polyolefin, polyester, nylon or combinations thereof, the transverse direction material having a second thickness, the second thickness being at least about 2 times greater than the first thickness so as to assist in providing drainage for moisture build-up; and

a second portion being a coating, the coating comprising a polyolefin, polyester, nylon or combinations thereof, the first and second portions being located adjacent to each other.

2. The protective wrap of claim 1, wherein the protective wrap is perforated.

3. The protective wrap of claim 1, wherein the first portion is cross-woven.

4. The protective wrap of claim 1, wherein the first portion is cross-laminated.

5. The protective wrap of claim 1, wherein the machine direction material and the transverse direction material comprise a plurality of tapes.

6. The protective wrap of claim 1, wherein the machine direction material has a machine direction count of from about 6 to about 24 per inch and the transverse direction material has a transverse direction count of from about 3 to about 6 per inch.

7. The protective wrap of claim 1, wherein the machine direction material and the transverse direction material independently comprise a polypropylene, polyethylene or combinations thereof.

8. The protective wrap of claim 7, wherein the machine direction material and the transverse direction material comprise a polypropylene.

9. The protective wrap of claim 1, wherein the coating comprises a polypropylene, polyethylene or combinations thereof.

10. The protective wrap of claim 1, wherein the machine direction material, the transverse direction material and the coating comprise a polypropylene, polyethylene or combinations thereof.

11. The protective wrap of claim 1 further including a third portion, the third portion being a coating comprising a polyolefin, polyester, nylon or combinations thereof, the first portion being located between the second and third portions.

12. The protective wrap of claim 1, wherein the transverse direction material is yarn.

13. The protective wrap of claim 12, wherein the yarn is spun yarn, bulk continuous process yarn or natural yarn

14. The protective wrap of claim 12, wherein the yarn comprises a polypropylene, polyethylene or combinations thereof.

15. The protective wrap of claim 1, wherein the machine direction material comprises a rectangular tape and the transverse direction material comprises generally oval or circular filaments.

16. The protective wrap of claim 1, wherein the second thickness is at least about 4 times greater than the first thickness.

18. The protective wrap of claim 1, wherein the protective wrap is perforated.

19. The protective wrap of claim 1, wherein the first portion is cross-woven.

20. The protective wrap of claim 1, wherein the first portion is cross-laminated.

62. The method of claim 16 further including providing a sheathing, the sheathing being located between the protective wrap and at least one framing member.

17. A protective drainage wrap comprising:

a first portion comprising cross-woven or cross-laminate material in the machine direction and in the transverse direction, the material in the machine direction comprising a polyolefin, polyester, nylon or combinations thereof, the machine direction material having a first thickness, the material in the transverse direction comprising a polyolefin, polyester, nylon or combinations thereof and having a second thickness, the transverse machine direction material being yarn, the second thickness being at least about 2 times greater than the first thickness so as to assist in providing drainage for moisture build-up; and

a second portion being a coating, the coating comprising a polyolefin, polyester, nylon or combinations thereof, the first and second portions being located adjacent to each other.

21. A method of using a protective wrap in a building, the method comprising:

providing a protective wrap comprising a first portion and a second portion, the first portion comprising cross-woven or cross-laminate material in the machine direction and in the transverse direction, the material in the machine direction comprising a polyolefin, polyester, nylon or combinations thereof, the machine direction material having a first thickness, the material in the transverse direction comprising a polyolefin, polyester, nylon or combinations thereof, the transverse machine direction material having a second thickness, the second thickness being at least about 2 times greater than the first thickness so as to assist in providing drainage for moisture build-up, the second portion being a coating, the coating comprising a polyolefin, polyester, nylon or combinations thereof, the first and second portions being located adjacent to each other;

providing at least one framing member; and

installing the protective wrap over at least one of the framing members.

22. The method of claim 21 further comprising providing an exterior covering selected from siding, brick, masonry, stucco or concrete veneer and installing the exterior covering over the protective wrap.

23. The method of claim 21, wherein the framing member is plywood or oriented-strand board.

24. The method of claim 21 further including providing a sheathing, the sheathing being located between the protective wrap and the framing members.

25. The method of claim 21, wherein the protective wrap is perforated.

26. The method of claim 21, wherein the first portion is cross-woven.

27. The method of claim 21, wherein the first portion is cross-laminated.

28. The method of claim 21, wherein the machine direction material and the transverse direction material comprise a plurality of tapes.

29. The method of claim 21, wherein the machine direction material has a machine direction count of from about 6 to about 24 per inch and the transverse direction material has a transverse direction count of from about 3 to about 6 per inch.

30. The method of claim 21, wherein the machine direction material, the transverse direction material and the coating comprise a polypropylene, polyethylene or combinations thereof.

31. The method of claim 21, wherein the transverse direction material is yarn.

32. The method of claim 31, wherein the yarn is spun yarn, bulk continuous process yarn or natural yarn.

33. The method of claim 31, wherein the first portion is cross-woven.

34. The method of claim 31, wherein the first portion is cross-laminated.

35. The method of claim 21, wherein the second thickness is at least about 4 times greater than the first thickness.

36. A method of using a protective wrap in a building, the method comprising:

providing a protective wrap comprising a first portion and a second portion, the first portion comprising cross-woven or cross-laminate material in the machine direction and in the transverse direction, the material in the machine direction comprising a polyolefin, polyester, nylon or combinations thereof, the machine direction material having a first thickness, the material in the transverse direction comprising a polyolefin, polyester, nylon or combinations thereof, the transverse machine direction material having a second thickness, the second thickness being at least about 2 times greater than the first thickness so as to assist in providing drainage for moisture build-up, the second portion being a coating, the coating comprising a polyolefin, polyester, nylon or combinations thereof, the first and second portions being located adjacent to each other;

providing a sheathing; and

installing the protective wrap over the sheathing.

37. The method of claim 36 further comprising providing an exterior covering selected from siding, brick, masonry, stucco or concrete veneer and installing the exterior covering over the protective wrap.

38. The method of claim 36 further including providing at least one framing member, the sheathing being located between the protective wrap and the framing member.

39. The method of claim 36, wherein the protective wrap is perforated.

40. The method of claim 36, wherein the first portion is cross-woven.

41. The method of claim 36, wherein the first portion is cross-laminated.

42. The method of claim 36, wherein the machine direction material and the transverse direction material comprise a plurality of tapes.

43. The method of claim 36, wherein the machine direction material has a machine direction count of from about 6 to about 24 per inch and the transverse direction material has a transverse direction count of from about 3 to about 6 per inch.

44. The method of claim 36, wherein the machine direction material, the transverse direction material and the coating comprise polypropylene, polyethylene or combinations thereof.

45. The method of claim 36, wherein the transverse direction material is yarn.

46. The method of claim 45, wherein the yarn is spun yarn, bulk continuous process yarn or natural yarn.

47. The method of claim 45, wherein the first portion is cross-woven.

48. The method of claim 45, wherein the first portion is cross-laminated.

49. The method of claim 36, wherein the second thickness is at least about 4 times greater than the first thickness.

50. A method of using a protective wrap in a building, the method comprising:

providing a protective wrap comprising a solid sheet portion and a plurality of tapes in the transverse direction, the solid sheet portion comprising a polyolefin, polyester, nylon or combinations thereof, the plurality of tapes in the transverse direction comprising a polyolefin, polyester, nylon or combinations thereof, the plurality of tapes being installed so as to assist in providing drainage for moisture build-up;

providing at least one framing member; and

installing the protective wrap over at least one of the framing members.

51. The method of claim 50, wherein the solid sheet portion and the plurality of tapes are cross-laminated.

52. The method of claim 50, wherein the solid sheet portion has a plurality of holes formed therein and the wherein the solid sheet portion and the plurality of tapes are cross-woven via the plurality of holes.

53. The method of claim 50, wherein the solid sheet portion has a first thickness and the plurality of tapes has a second thickness, the second thickness being at least about 2 times greater than the first thickness so as to assist in providing drainage for moisture build-up.

54. The method of claim 50, wherein the plurality of tapes are installed in a generally vertical position so as to assist in providing drainage for moisture build-up.

55. The method of claim 50, wherein the solid sheet is perforated.

56. A method of using a protective wrap in a building, the method comprising:

providing a protective wrap comprising a solid sheet portion and a yarn portion, the solid sheet portion comprising polyolefin, polyester, nylon or combinations thereof, the yarn portion comprising polyolefin, polyester, nylon or combinations thereof, the yarn portion comprising a plurality of yarn strands being installed so as to assist in providing drainage for moisture build-up;

providing at least one framing member; and

installing the protective wrap over the at least one framing member.

57. The method of claim 56, wherein the solid sheet portion and the yarn portion are cross-laminated.

58. The method of claim 56, wherein the solid sheet portion has a plurality of holes formed therein and the wherein the solid sheet portion and the yarn portion are cross-woven via the plurality of holes.

59. The method of claim 56, wherein the solid sheet portion has a first thickness and the yarn portion has a second thickness, the second thickness being at least about 2 times greater than the first thickness so as to assist in providing drainage for moisture build-up.

60. The method of claim 56, wherein the plurality of yarn strands are installed in a generally vertical position so as to assist in providing drainage for moisture build-up.

61. The method of claim 56, wherein the solid sheet is perforated.
