Abstract

An absorbent article such as infant training pants is provided with a mechanical hook-and-loop type fastening system utilizing multi-directional stretchable nonwoven materials that function well with low shear strength.

Claims

1. A garment for personal wear, comprising:

a body having first and second end regions;

a mechanical fastening system disposed on the body, the mechanical fastening system comprising;

a multi-directional stretchable landing member disposed in the first end region and comprising a multi-directional stretchable loop material, the multi-directional stretchable loop material being extensible during use in first and second substantially perpendicular directions and being elastomeric during use in at least one of the first and second directions, and

a closure member disposed in the second end region and comprising a hook material adapted to refastenably engage the multi-directional stretchable loop material;

wherein the multi-directional stretchable landing member and closure member provide shear strength values of less than 3900 grams in each of the first and second directions.

2. The garment of claim 1, wherein the multi-directional stretchable loop material is elastomeric during use in both the first and second directions.

3. The garment of claim 1, wherein the multi-directional stretchable loop material comprises a nonwoven web stretch bonded to an elastomeric film.

4. The garment of claim 1, wherein the multi-directional stretchable loop material comprises a mechanically prestrained composite.

5. The garment of claim 1, wherein the multi-directional stretchable landing member and closure member provide shear strength values of about 3500 grams or less in each of the first and second directions.

6. The garment of claim 1, wherein the multi-directional stretchable landing member and closure member provide shear strength values of about 3000 grams or less in each of the first and second directions.

7. The garment of claim 1, wherein the multi-directional stretchable landing member and closure member provide shear strength values of about 2500 grams or less in each of the first and second directions.

8. The garment of claim 1, wherein the hook material is stretchable.

9. A disposable absorbent article for personal wear, comprising:

a body having first and second end regions and comprising a liquid permeable inner layer, an outer layer in opposed relation with the inner layer, and an absorbent layer disposed between the inner layer and the outer layer;

a mechanical fastening system disposed on the body, the mechanical fastening system comprising;

a multi-directional stretchable landing member disposed in the first end region and comprising a multi-directional stretchable loop material, the multi-directional stretchable loop material being extensible during use in first and second substantially perpendicular directions and being elastomeric during use in at least one of the first and second directions, and

a closure member disposed in the second end region and comprising a hook material adapted to refastenably engage the multi-directional stretchable loop material;

wherein the multi-directional stretchable landing member and closure member provide shear strength values of about 1500 to about 3500 grams in each of the first and second directions.

10. The disposable absorbent article of claim 9, wherein the multi-directional stretchable landing member and closure member provide shear strength values of about 1500 to about 3500 grams in each of the first and second directions.

11. The disposable absorbent article of claim 9, wherein the multi-directional stretchable landing member and closure member provide shear strength values of about 1500 to about 3000 grams in each of the first and second directions.

12. The disposable absorbent article of claim 9, wherein the multi-directional stretchable landing member and closure member provide shear strength values of about 1500 to about 2500 grams in each of the first and second directions.

13. The disposable absorbent article of claim 9, wherein the multi-directional stretchable landing member comprises a neck-stretched elastic laminate.

14. The disposable absorbent article of claim 9, wherein the multi-directional stretchable landing member comprises a creped-stretched elastic laminate.

15. The disposable absorbent article of claim 9, wherein the multi-directional stretchable landing member forms part of the outer layer.

16. The disposable absorbent article of claim 9, wherein the multi-directional stretchable landing member comprises side panels of the body.

17. The disposable absorbent article of claim 9, wherein the multi-directional stretchable loop material comprises a nonwoven web stretch bonded to an elastomeric film.

18. The disposable absorbent article of claim 9, wherein the multi-directional stretchable loop material comprises a mechanically prestrained composite.

19. A disposable absorbent article for personal wear, comprising:

a body having first and second end regions and comprising a liquid permeable inner layer, an outer layer in opposed relation with the inner layer, and an absorbent layer disposed between the inner layer and the outer layer;

a mechanical fastening system disposed on the body, the mechanical fastening system comprising;

a multi-directional stretchable landing member disposed in the first end region and comprising a multi-directional stretchable loop material, the multi-directional stretchable loop material being extensible and elastomeric during use in first and second substantially perpendicular directions, and

a closure member disposed in the second end region and comprising a hook material adapted to refastenably engage the multi-directional stretchable loop material;

wherein the multi-directional stretchable landing member and closure member provide shear strength values of about 1500 to about 3500 grams in each of the first and second directions.

20. The disposable absorbent article of claim 19, wherein the multi-directional stretchable loop material comprises a nonwoven web stretch bonded to an elastomeric film.

21. The disposable absorbent article of claim 19, wherein the multi-directional stretchable loop material comprises a mechanically prestrained composite.

22. The disposable absorbent article of claim 19, wherein the multi-directional stretchable landing member and closure member provide shear strength values of about 1500 to about 3000 grams in each of the first and second directions.

23. The disposable absorbent article of claim 19, wherein the multi-directional stretchable landing member and closure member provide shear strength values of about 1500 to about 2500 grams in each of the first and second directions.

24. The disposable absorbent article of claim 19, wherein the multi-directional stretchable landing member forms part of the outer layer.

25. The disposable absorbent article of claim 19, wherein the multi-directional stretchable landing member comprises side panels of the body.

26. The disposable absorbent article of claim 19, wherein the hook material is stretchable.
