Abstract

A system and method for delivering electronic mail to the user at a previously defined remote location which also allows the user to reply to the email from such remote location is disclosed. An application program operates at the user'"'"'s home electronic mail communication system, typically a desktop PC, forwarding electronic mail messages through the internet to a central system, which contains user profile information and acts as a forwarding server. The system can also be applied to the user'"'"'s mail server instead of the user'"'"'s desktop PC. Preferred user profiles stored in the forwarding server determine how the server directs notification of new email to the user in accordance with the user'"'"'s preferred profile. Information regarding the pending emails are directed to the user'"'"'s mobile telephone or PDA device, allowing the user to determine whether to respond to the electronic mail presently or defer response, in accordance with the user'"'"'s preference at the time of receipt. The system provides for translation of email messages from text to speech for delivery to the user and also provides for speech to text transcription in the message response mode at the user'"'"'s selection.

Claims

1. A method of notifying of the arrival of and selectively forwarding E-mail messages sent to a user'"'"'s computer system to the user at a remote location, comprising the steps of:

configuring the user'"'"'s computer system to forward E-mail messages received to a forwarding server;

detecting that an E-mail message has arrived at the user'"'"'s computer system and forwarding said message to said forwarding server;

receiving an E-mail message directed to user'"'"'s computer system from a message sender;

in response to the receipt of said received E-mail message, forwarding the said message from the user'"'"'s computer system to said forwarding server;

selecting said E-mail message in said forwarding server;

forwarding the selected E-mail message to said user at a remote location;

generating reply messages at the said remote user location to be sent to the E-mail message sender;

transmitting the reply message to the forwarding server;

receiving the reply message at the forwarding server;

processing the reply message at the forwarding server; and

transmitting the reply message from the forwarding server to identified recipients of said reply message.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein said forwarding server is configured with the user'"'"'s selected forwarding profile.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein further said E-mail message is forwarded to a remote user location in accordance with the said user selected forwarding profile.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein further said user selected forwarding profile is comprised of the option of text to speech conversion.

5. A method of notifying of the arrival of and selectively forwarding E-mail messages sent to a user'"'"'s computer system to the user at a remote location, comprising the steps of:

configuring the user'"'"'s computer system to forward E-mail messages received to a forwarding server configured with the user'"'"'s selected handling profile;

detecting that an E-mail message has arrived at the user'"'"'s computer system and forwarding said message to said forwarding server;

receiving E-mail message directed to user'"'"'s computer system from a plurality of message senders;

in response to the receipt of said received E-mail messages, forwarding the said messages from the user'"'"'s computer system to said forwarding server;

selecting E-mail messages in said forwarding server to a user location in accordance with the said user profile;

forwarding the selected E-mail messages in a format defined in said user profile;

generating reply messages at the remote user location to be sent to the plurality of E-mail message senders;

transmitting the reply messages to the forwarding server;

receiving the reply messages at the forwarding server;

processing the reply messages at the forwarding server; and

transmitting the reply messages from the forwarding server to identified recipients of said reply message.

6. A method of notifying of the arrival of and selectively forwarding E-mail messages sent to a user'"'"'s computer system to the user at a remote location, comprising the steps of:

configuring the user'"'"'s computer system to forward E-mail messages received by said system to a forwarding server;

detecting that an E-mail message has arrived at the user'"'"'s computer system and forwarding said message to said forwarding server;

configuring said forwarding server with the user'"'"'s selected message handling profile which includes a user preferred message forwarding format;

receiving E-mail messages directed to user'"'"'s computer system from a plurality of message senders;

in response to the receipt of said received E-mail messages, forwarding the said messages from the user'"'"'s computer system to said forwarding server;

selecting portions of said E-mail messages in said forwarding server to be forwarded to a remote user location in accordance with the said user handling profile;

converting the said selected portions of said E-mail messages from a text format to a speech format;

forwarding the said converted E-mail messages to a remote telephonic device as defined in said user profile;

generating speech based reply messages at the remote user location to be sent to the plurality of E-mail message senders;

transmitting the reply messages to the forwarding server;

receiving the reply messages at the forwarding server;

processing the reply messages at the forwarding server, said processing including converting said reply messages from speech to text; and

transmitting the reply messages from the forwarding server to identified recipients of said reply message.
