Abstract

A power modulator includes a plurality of magnetic cores, at least one secondary that surrounds all of the magnetic cores, and at least one pulse generating module made up of an energy storage capacitor, switching means electronically controllable at turn-on and turn-off, a diode or an assembly of series-connected diodes connected in parallel with output conductors, and a set of single-turn or multi-turn primary windings, each set of primary windings surrounding a respective one of the plurality of magnetic cores, the sets of primary windings being connected in parallel to thereby provide a power modulator where each of the pulse generating modules drives all of the plurality of magnetic cores.

Claims

1. A power modulator comprising:

at least one pulse generating module; and

at least one secondary winding that surrounds all of a plurality of magnetic cores,

wherein each said pulse generating module includes;

an energy storage capacitor;

switching means electronically controllable at turn-on and turn-off;

at least one diode connected in parallel with output conductors of said pulse generating module; and

a set of primary windings, and

wherein each primary winding in said set of primary windings surrounds a respective one of said plurality of magnetic cores, said set of primary windings being connected in parallel to thereby provide a power modulator where each of said at least one pulse generating modules drives all of said plurality of magnetic cores.

2. A power modulator as in claim 1, wherein said at least one diode is part of an assembly of series-connected diodes.

3. A power modulator as in claim 1, wherein said primary windings are single-turn primary windings.

4. A power modulator as in claim 1, wherein said primary windings are multi-turn primary windings.

5. A power modulator as in claim 1, having at least two pulse generating modules, each of said at least two pulse generating modules including a set of primary windings, each primary winding surrounding a respective one of the plurality of magnetic cores, said set of primary windings being connected in parallel and to said pulse generating module to thereby obtain equal currents in all of said at least two pulse generating modules and eliminate a destructive over-voltage condition in said at least two pulse generating modules.

6. A power modulator as in claim 5, wherein the number of pulse generating modules is equal to the number of magnetic cores.

7. A power modulator as in claim 5, wherein the number of pulse generating modules is different from the number of cores.

8. A power modulator as in claim 5, wherein each pulse generating module can be turned-on or turned-off, by hand or by automatic means, at different times.

9. A power modulator as in claim 5, wherein all pulse generating modules are connected in parallel.

10. A power modulator as in claims 5, wherein said switching means is an IGBT solid-state switch.

11. A power modulator as in claim 1, wherein the number of pulse generating modules is equal to the number of magnetic cores.

12. A power modulator as in claim 1, wherein the number of pulse generating modules is different from the number of cores.

13. A power modulator as in claim 1, wherein each pulse generating module can be turned-on or turned-off, by hand or by automatic means, at different times.

14. A power modulator as in claims 1, wherein said switching means is an IGBT solid-state switch.
