Abstract

Apparatus, systems and methods are disclosed for treating a biological fluid with light. A disposable fluid processing set including integrally connected containers and tubing and a holder or organizer for receiving at least some of the containers and tubing are disclosed.

Claims

1. A packaged fluid processing set comprising:

a fluid processing set including at least two flexible containers integrally connected by a flexible plastic tube;

a support having at least one substantially rounded surface over which at least one of said containers is folded.

2. The packaged fluid processing set of claim 1 wherein said support comprises a folded sheet of flexible material.

3. The packaged fluid processing set of claim 2 wherein said sheet comprises at least one pair of upstanding knobs abutted one against the other.

4. The packaged fluid processing set of claim 2 further comprising at least one peg at one end of said sheet and inserted into a corresponding slot at the opposite end of said sheet.

5. The packaged fluid processing set of claim 2 wherein said sheet comprises at least one pair of an interlocking tab and slot.

6. The packaged fluid processing set of claim 1 wherein said support comprises a tab for receiving a slit of a container folded over said support.

7. The packaged fluid processing set of claim 1 further comprising a band for holding said container against said support.

8. A disposable fluid processing set comprising:

a first portion comprising at least one container;

a second portion comprising at least one container;

wherein said first and second portions are integrally connected by a plastic tube;

an organizer for receiving said second portion, said organizer comprising a folded sheet of a flexible material, wherein the facing sheet portions are secured to each other.

9. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 8 wherein said container of said second portion is folded over said sheet.

10. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 8 wherein said sheet comprises a cut-out for holding the edge of said container of said second portion.

11. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 8 wherein said facing sheet portions are secured together by interlocking tabs and slots.

12. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 8 wherein said sheet is made of a substantially opaque material.

13. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 8 wherein the container of said second portion is substantially within said folded sheet.

14. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 8 wherein said sheet comprises one more apertures for receiving tubing of the disposable processing set.

15. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 8 wherein said sheet comprises a central region comprising a cut-out for receiving said container of said second portion.

16. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 15 wherein said central region is perforated.

17. The disposable processing set of claim 8 wherein said organizer includes a tab for attachment to a container holding compartment of an illumination device.

18. A disposable fluid processing set comprising:

a first container including an inlet and an outlet and a treating agent within said container;

a tube with one end communicating with said inlet and defining an openable flow path;

a second container;

a tube with one end communicating with said first container outlet and the other end communicating with said second container and defining an openable flow path between said first and second containers.

19. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 18 wherein said container is made of a material suitable for holding said treating agent.

20. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 18 wherein said first container comprises a light impermeable overwrap over said container.

21. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 20 wherein said container is made from two sealed-together sheets of said material.

22. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 21 wherein said overwrap is sealed to said sealed-together sheets.

23. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 22 wherein said overwrap comprises two sheets of light impermeable material wherein one sheet of said light impermeable material is sealed to one of said sealed-together sheets and said other of said light impermeable sheets is sealed to said other of said sealed-together sheets.

24. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 19 wherein said material comprises a blend of ethylene, propylene, polyamide and a block copolymer of ethylene and butylenes with terminal blocks of polystyrene.

25. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 20 wherein said light impermeable overwrap is made of at least pigmented polypropylene.

26. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 20 further comprising a second light impermeable overwrap over at least said container.

27. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 26 wherein said second light impermeable overwrap comprises a sleeve enclosing said first container.

28. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 27 wherein said sleeve covers at least portions of said inlet and outlet.

29. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 18 comprising a barrier within said tube communicating with said first container and a barrier within said tube defining said flow path between said first and second containers.

30. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 29 wherein said barriers comprise frangible members.

31. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 29 further comprising a third container;

an adsorbent material within said third container;

a tube defining an openable flow path between said second and third containers; and

a barrier within said tube.

32. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 31 wherein said barrier comprises a frangible member.

33. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 31 comprising a fourth container;

a tube defining an openable flow path between said third and fourth containers.

34. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 33 wherein said tube defining said openable flow path between said third and fourth containers is in flow communication with a particle capturing device.

35. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 34 wherein said particle capturing device comprises a filter.

36. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 35 wherein said filter comprises a mesh material.

37. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 34 wherein said capturing device comprises a pouch in flow communication with said tube defining said openable flow path between said third and fourth containers.

38. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 37 wherein said pouch includes an inlet port on one side of said pouch and an outlet port on the opposite side of said pouch.

39. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 38 wherein said capturing device comprises a sheet of a mesh material sealed between the walls of said pouch.

40. The disposable fluid processing set of claim 39 wherein the interior surface of at least one of said walls comprises one or more inwardly extending ribs.

41. A disposable fluid processing set for treating a biological fluid comprising:

a first portion comprising a container for containing a biological fluid during treatment;

a second portion comprising a container for receiving said biological fluid after treatment;

a tube connecting said containers and defining an openable flow path between said containers, and

a holder for temporarily holding said second portion separate from said first portion during a processing step.
