Abstract

An adjustable booster-type seat having a base 10 for supporting the seat on a flat surface, a riser 12 mounted for height adjustment on the base, a body support 14 having a seat and back mounted for arcuate motion on the riser 12 for changing the angular position of the body support 14 and being adjustable in height by virtue of the adjustability of the riser on the base. A restraint bar 16 is detachably connected to the body support and in turn adjustably carries a tray 18 enabling the tray to be moved toward and away form the back and to be mounted at different angles with respect to the body support 14.

Claims

1. A booster seat comprising,

a base and a riser on the base,

a track carried by the riser and a body support mounted on the track enabling said body support to move between an upright and reclined position,

a restraint including a post mounted on the body support for retaining a child in the body support,

and a tray adjustably mounted on the restraint for enabling the tray to be moved toward and away from the body support and for changing the angular relationship of the tray with the body support.

2. A booster seat as defined in claim 1 wherein the body support includes a seat and backrest.

3. A booster seat as defined in claim 2 wherein the body support is a unitized structure that moves as a unit on the riser.

4. A booster seat as defined in claim 2 wherein the backrest is collapsible for reducing the size of the booster for travel and storage.

5. A booster seat as defined in claim 1 wherein the riser may be raised and lowered on the base for raising and lowering the body support with respect to the base.

6. A booster seat comprising,

a base assembly and a seat and a back mounted on the base assembly,

an arcuate support on the base assembly enabling the seat and back to move as a unit between upright, immediate, and fully reclined positions and to be raised and lowered with respect to the base,

and a tray carried by the seat movable toward and away from the back.

7. A booster seat as defined in claim 6 wherein the angular relationship between the tray and seat may be varied.

8. A booster seat as defined in claim 6 wherein the backrest is collapsible for reducing the size of the booster for travel and storage.

9. A booster seat as defined in claim 6 wherein the seat and back have a fixed angular relationship with one another.

10. A booster seat comprising,

a base and a riser attached to the base,

an adjustment mechanism operatively connecting the riser to the base for raising and lowering the riser on the base,

an arcuate track carried by the riser,

and a body support movable back and forth on the track for changing the angular orientation of the body support between upright and reclining positions.

11. A booster seat as described in claim 10 wherein the body support has an arcuate surface mating with the track.

19. A booster seat as defined in claim 10 wherein a latching mechanism is operatively connected to the body support and riser for selectively locking the body support in the upright positions and in at least one intermediate position between the upright and reclining positions.

12. A booster seat comprising,

a base and a body support having a pair of arcuate tracks running fore and aft, one on each side of the base,

a seat and back assembly having a fixed angular relationship mounted on the tracks for fore and aft and tilting motion to selectively move the assembly between an upright, reclined and intermediate orientations,

and adjusting mechanism operatively connected to the base and support for raising and lowering the seat and back assembly with respect to the base,

a restraining member attached to the assembly,

a tray adjustably supported on the member for back and forth and tilting adjustment enabling the tray to be placed in a substantially horizontal orientation when the seat and the backrest assembly is in both upright and tilted positions,

said back assembly having upper and lower portions enabling the upper portion to collapse down on the lower portion to reduce the volume of the booster seat for storage and travel.

13. A booster seat as described in claim 12 wherein the restraining member is detachable from the base.

14. A booster seat comprising,

a base and a support adjustably mounted on the base for varying the height of the support with respect to the base,

a seat and back assembly mounted for tilting motion on the support enabling the assembly to move between upright and reclined positions,

and a tray movably mounted on the assembly enabling the tray to be horizontally oriented independent of the position of the assembly.

15. A booster seat comprising,

a base and a seat and backrest assembly movably supported by the base for tilting motion thereon between upright and reclined positions,

and a tray mounted on the seat and backrest assembly for movement to a horizontal orientation when the assembly is in a reclined position.

16. A booster seat as defined in claim 15 wherein a restraint attached to the seat and backrest assembly supports the tray.

17. A booster seat as defined in claim 16 wherein the tray is adjustably mounted on the restraint for changing the plane of the tray.

18. A booster seat as defined in claim 16 wherein the tray is movable toward and away from the backrest.

20. A booster seat comprising,

a base,

a seat,

a curved platform defining an arc on the base supporting a complementary curved portion on a surface of the seat to permit relative movement along the arc,

at least one slot in the curved platform, and

at least one tab carried on the seat extending through a slot and engaging a surface of the platform on an opposite side of the platform from the seat and backrest to guide the seat with respect to the base during relative movement along the arc.

21. The booster seat of claim 20 wherein the tab is formed as a monolithic portion of the seat.

22. The booster seat of claim 20 wherein the at least one slot comprises two slots and the at least one tab comprises two tabs each carried on the seat and each extending through a slot and engaging a surface of the platform on an opposite side of the platform from the seat and backrest to guide the seat with respect to the base during relative movement along the arc.

23. The booster seat of claim 20 wherein the at least one slot comprises three slots and the at least one tab comprises three tabs each carried on the seat and each extending through a slot and engaging a surface of the platform on an opposite side of the platform from the seat and backrest to guide the seat with respect to the base during relative movement along the arc.

24. The booster seat of claim 23 wherein one of the tabs and slots is located generally intermediate the other two tabs and slots.

25. The booster seat of claim 22 comprising two rails on the platform, each rail being adjacent one of the slots.

26. The booster seat of claim 20 wherein the seat is monolithically formed and has hollow armrests.

27. The booster seat of claim 20 wherein the curved platform is monolithically formed and has hollow side portions that fit within hollow armrests on the seat.

28. The booster seat of claim 20 wherein the seat has hollow armrests, the curved platform has hollow side portions that fit within hollow armrests on the seat and the base has side portions adapted to fit within the hollow side portions of the curved platform.

29. The booster seat of claim 20 wherein a latch is coupled to at least one of the curved platform and curved portion on a surface of the seat and a complimentary holding surface is coupled to the other of the curved platform and curved portion on a surface of the seat.

30. The booster seat of claim 29 wherein the latch complimentary holding surface comprise a rack and a tab in complimentary selective engagement whereby the seat and curved platform are locked to arrest arcuate movement and unlocked to permit arcuate movement.

31. The booster seat of claim 20 further comprising a height adjustment means for adjusting the height of the curved platform with respect to the base.

32. The booster seat of claim 20 further comprising a stop on the platform adapted to engage a projection on the bottom of the seat and an abutment at the other end of the platform adapted to engage a tab.

33. The booster seat of claim 20 wherein the platform is monolithic.

34. The booster seat of claim 28 wherein,

the seat has a seating surface between the hollow armrests and on the opposite side of the seating surface there is provided guides adapted to contact side portions of the curved platform.

35. The booster seat of claim 20 comprising

legs adapted to be removably attached to the base to raise and lower the level of the seat.

36. A booster seat comprising,

a base,

a seat,

means for supporting the seat and backrest with respect to the base to permit relative movement along an arc,

means for locking and releasing the seat and backrest with respect to the base in a position from upright to reclined, and

means for raising and lowering the seat and backrest on the base.

37. A booster seat comprising,

a base,

a seat,

a riser on the base supporting the seat and adapted to raise and lower the seat, and

at least two telescoping members between the base and riser and adapted to limit movement in the telescoping direction.

38. The booster seat of claim 37 wherein the telescoping members have an antirotational fit.

39. The booster seat of claim 38 wherein the antirotational fit comprises fluting.

40. The booster seat of claim 37 wherein the at least two telescoping members comprise three telescoping members.

41. The booster seat of claim 40 wherein the base has antiskid material coupled to the bottom.

42. A booster seat comprising,

a base,

a seat including a seat with a seating surface between spaced hollow arms,

a monolithic riser having a curved platform portion defining an arc and supporting the seat on the base to permit movement of the seat along the arc from an upright position to a reclined position,

the curved platform portion being between spaced hollow walls of the riser,

arcuate tracks on a surface of the curved platform portion of the riser facing the seat,

slots in the riser adjacent the arcuate tracks receiving arms extending from the seat and backrest with at least one tab on each arm, each tab engaging a guide surface of the riser facing away from the seat and backrest, the guide surface being shaped to guide the riser and seat and backrest during relative arcuate movement,

at least one stop member on a surface of the riser adjacent the seat and backrest engaging the seat and backrest to arrest arcuate movement in one direction,

at least one abutment member on an opposite side of the riser from the seat and backrest engaging a tab to arrest arcuate movement in a second direction,

abutment surfaces on the seat and backrest adapted to engage the arcuate tracks for guiding movement of the seat and backrest along the arc,

guides supported on the seat on a side opposite the seating surface and facing the riser, the guides adapted to contact the riser,

a rack in a recess in the seat and a lever in a recess on the riser, the lever being adapted to selectively engage the rack at intervals along the arc whereby the riser is locked to arrest arcuate movement and unlocked to permit arcuate movement.
