1. A method for sorting and bundling mail pieces for delivery comprising:

  • a) sorting a batch of mail pieces, each mail piece having a destination code thereon which corresponds to one of a predetermined number of delivery destinations for a carrier delivery route, in a sorting pass using an automated sorting machine which scans and stores each delivery code in a computer memory, the computer further storing the number of mail pieces having the same destination code;

    b) outputting the batch of mail pieces from the automated sorting machine in order such that the mail pieces are ordered by delivery destination;

    c) transferring the batch of sorted mail pieces to at least one bundling machine; and

    d) bundling the mail pieces into bundles for delivery to destinations based upon the number of mail pieces stored by the computer for delivery to each destination.
