Abstract

An important objective for third generation mobile communications systems is to provide IP services, and a very important part of these services will be the conversational voice. The conversational voice service includes three distinct information flows: session control, the voice media, and the media control messages. In a preferred embodiment, based on the specific characteristics for each information flow, each information flow is allocated its own bearer with a Quality of Service (QoS) tailored to its particular characteristics. In a second embodiment, the session control and media control messages are supported with a single bearer with a QoS that suits both types of control messages. Both embodiments provide an IP conversational voice service with increased radio resource efficiency and QoS.

Claims

1. A method for establishing a session involving a mobile radio terminal configured to access a packet-based access network via a radio access network comprising:

establishing a first bearer extending between the mobile terminal and the packet-based access network;

using the first bearer to initiate a session that includes a packet-based voice communication;

the first bearer carrying one or more session messages for implementing a packet-based voice service;

establishing a second bearer for the session extending between the mobile terminal and the packet-based access network to carry voice packets associated with the packet-based voice service; and

establishing a third bearer for the session extending between the mobile terminal and the packet-based access network to carry control messages associated with the packet-based voice service.

2. The method in claim 1, wherein each of the first, second, and third bearers is established with a quality of service tailored to characteristics of the information being carried over that bearer.

3. The method in claim 1, wherein the first bearer is established with an interactive quality of service, the second bearer is established with a conversational quality of service, and the third bearer is established with an interactive quality of service.

4. The method in claim 1, further comprising:

establishing a priority for the first bearer.

5. The method in claim 1, wherein the first, second, and third bearers correspond to first, second, and third packet data contexts, respectively.

6. The method in claim 1, wherein the first, second, and third bearers are radio access bearers (RABs).

7. The method in claim 6, further comprising:

establishing a first Packet Data Protocol (PDP) context for session messages relating to the packet-based voice service and mapping the first PDP context onto the first RAB;

establishing a second PDP context for voice packets and mapping the second PDP context onto the second RAB; and

establishing a third PDP context for control messages associated with the voice packets and mapping the third PDP context onto the third RAB.

8. The method in claim 7, wherein the session messages are Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) messages carrying Session Description Protocol (SDP) information over a User Datagram Protocol (UDP), the voice packets are carried by the Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP) protocol over UDP, and the control messages associated with the voice packets are Real-Time Control Protocol (RTCP) messages over UDP.

9. The method in claim 7, further comprising:

mapping each of the first, second, and third RABs to one or more radio bearers between the mobile terminal and the radio access networks.

10. The method in claim 7, further comprising:

using the first PDP context to transfer signaling that triggers establishment of the second and third PDP contexts.

11. The method in claim 7, further comprising:

releasing the second and third RABs if there is no active transmission for a period of time, and

maintaining the first RAB in order to keep the first PDP context active for a duration of the session.

12. The method in claim 7, further comprising:

establishing the second and third PDP contexts using a single request.

13. The method in claim 1, wherein the second and third bearers may be established in any order relative to each other.

14. The method in claim 1, wherein the session is a multimedia session, further comprising:

establishing an additional bearer for a session media flow other than the packet-based voice communication in any order relative to the second and third bearers.

15. A method for establishing a session that includes a packet-based voice communication involving a mobile radio terminal that is configured to access a General Packet Radio Services (GPRS) network via a radio access network, comprising:

establishing for the session a first Packet Data Protocol (PDP) context for session messages relating to a packet-based voice service and supporting a first quality of service selected for session messages;

establishing for the session a second PDP context for voice packets and supporting a second quality of service selected for voice packets; and

establishing for the session a third PDP context for control messages associated with the voice packets and supporting a third quality of service selected for control messages.

16. The method in claim 15, wherein each of the first, second, and third PDP contexts extends from the mobile terminal to a Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) in the GPRS network.

17. The method in claim 15, further comprising:

mapping the first PDP context onto a first radio access bearer (RAB) extending between the mobile terminal and a Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN) in the GPRS network;

mapping the second PDP context onto a second RAB extending between the mobile terminal and the SGSN; and

mapping the third PDP context onto a third RAB extending between the mobile terminal and the SGSN.

18. The method in claim 15, wherein each of the first, second, and third PDP contexts is established with a quality of service tailored to characteristics of the information associated with that PDP context.

19. The method in claim 15, wherein the first PDP context is established with an interactive quality of service, the second PDP context is established with a conversational quality of service, and the third PDP context is established with an interactive quality of service.

20. The method in claim 15, further comprising:

establishing a priority for the first PDP context.

21. The method in claim 15, wherein the session messages are Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) messages carrying Session Description Protocol (SDP) information over a User Datagram Protocol (UDP), the voice packets are carried by the Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP) protocol over UDP, and the control messages associated with the voice packets are Real-Time Control Protocol (RTCP) messages over UDP.

22. The method in claim 15, further comprising:

using the first PDP context to transfer signaling that triggers establishment of the second and third PDP contexts.

23. The method in claim 15, further comprising:

establishing the second and third PDP contexts using a single request.

24. The method in claim 15, wherein the second and third PDP contexts may be established in any order relative to each other.

25. The method in claim 15, wherein the session is a multimedia session, further comprising:

establishing an additional PDP context for a session media flow other than the packet-based voice communication in any order relative to the second and third PDP contexts.

26. A mobile terminal for use in a mobile communications system that includes a packet-based access network, comprising electronic circuitry configured to perform the following tasks related to establishing an IP session:

coordinate with a node in the packet-based access network to establish a first bearer extending between the mobile terminal and the packet-based access network;

use the first bearer to initiate an IP session including a conversational IP service, the first bearer for carrying one or more session messages for implementing the conversational IP service;

coordinate with the packet-based access network node to establish a second bearer for the IP session extending between the mobile terminal and the packet-based access network to carry voice packets associated with the conversational IP service; and

coordinate with the packet-based access network node to establish a third bearer for the IP session extending between the mobile terminal and the packet-based access network to carry control messages associated with the conversational IP service.

27. The mobile terminal in claim 26, wherein each of the first, second, and third bearers is established with a quality of service tailored to characteristics of the information being carried over that bearer.

28. The mobile terminal in claim 26, wherein the first bearer is established with an interactive quality of service, the second bearer is established with a conversational quality of service, and the third bearer is established with a interactive quality of service.

29. The mobile terminal in claim 26, wherein the first bearer is prioritized.

30. The mobile terminal in claim 26, wherein the session messages are Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) messages carrying Session Description Protocol (SDP) information over a User Datagram Protocol (UDP), the voice packets are carried by the Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP) protocol over UDP, and the control messages associated with the voice packets are Real-Time Control Protocol (RTCP) messages over UDP.

31. The mobile terminal in claim 26, wherein each of the bearers is a packet data context.

32. The mobile terminal in claim 26, wherein each of the bearers is a radio access bearer (RAB).

33. The mobile terminal in claim 32, wherein the electronic circuitry is further configured to:

coordinate with another packet-based access network node to establish a first Packet Data Protocol (PDP) context for session messages relating to the conversational IP multimedia service and map the first PDP context onto the first RAB;

coordinate with the other packet-based access network node to establish a second PDP context for voice packets and map the second PDP context onto the second RAB; and

coordinate with the other packet-based access network node to establish a third PDP context for control messages associated with the voice packets and map the third PDP context onto the third RAB.

34. The mobile terminal in claim 33, wherein the electronic circuitry is further configured to establish the second and third PDP contexts using a single request.

35. The mobile terminal in claim 26, wherein the session is a multimedia session, wherein the electronic circuitry is further configured to establish an additional bearer for a session media flow other than the voice packets in any order relative to the second and third bearers.

36. The mobile terminal in claim 26, wherein the second and third bearers may be established in any order relative to each other.

37. A mobile terminal for use in a mobile communications system that includes a radio access network coupled to a General Packet Radio Services (GPRS) network, comprising electronic circuitry configured to perform the following tasks related to establishing an IP session:

coordinate with a GGSN node in the GPRS network to establish a first Packet Data Protocol (PDP) context for session messages relating to a conversational IP service that supports a first quality of service selected for session messages;

coordinate with a Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN node in the GPRS network to establish a second PDP context for voice packets that supports a second quality of service selected for voice packets; and

coordinate with the GGSN node to establish a third PDP context for control messages associated with the voice packets that supports a third quality of service selected for control messages.

38. The mobile terminal in claim 37, wherein the electronic circuitry is further configured to:

map the first PDP context onto a first radio access bearer (RAB) extending between the mobile terminal and a Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN) in the GPRS network;

map the second PDP context onto a second RAB extending between the mobile terminal and the SGSN; and

map the third PDP context onto a third RAB extending between the mobile terminal and the SGSN.

39. The mobile terminal in claim 37, wherein each of the first, second, and third PDP contexts has a quality of service tailored to characteristics of the information associated with that PDP context.

40. The mobile terminal in claim 37, wherein the first PDP context has an interactive quality of service, the second PDP context has a conversational quality of service, and the third PDP context has an interactive quality of service.

41. The mobile terminal in claim 37, wherein the session messages are Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) messages carrying Session Description Protocol (SDP) information over a User Datagram Protocol (UDP), the voice packets are carried by the Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP) protocol over UDP, and the control messages associated with the voice packets are Real-Time Control Protocol (RTCP) messages over UDP.

42. A node for use with a packet-based access network, comprising electronic circuitry configured to perform the following tasks related to establishing an IP session:

coordinate with a mobile radio terminal to establish a first bearer extending between the mobile radio terminal and the packet-based access network, wherein the first bearer is useable to establish the IP session including a conversational IP service and to carry one or more session messages for implementing the conversational IP service;

coordinate with the mobile radio terminal to establish a second bearer for the IP multimedia session extending between the mobile radio terminal and the packet-based access network to carry voice packets associated with the conversational IP service; and

coordinate with the packet-based access network node to establish a third bearer for the IP session extending between the mobile radio terminal and the packet-based access network to carry control messages associated with the conversational IP service.

43. The node in claim 42, wherein the bearers are packet data contexts.

44. The node in claim 42, wherein the bearers are radio access bearers (RABs).

45. The node in claim 44, wherein the node is a Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN) in a General Packet Radio Services (GPRS) network, and wherein the SGSN electronic circuitry is configured to:

map a first PDP context onto the first RAB;

map a second PDP context onto the second RAB; and

map a third PDP context onto the third RAB.

46. The node in claim 45, wherein each of the first, second, and third PDP contexts has a quality of service tailored to characteristics of the information associated with that PDP context.

47. The node in claim 46, wherein the first PDP context has an interactive quality of slice (QoS), the second PDP context has a conversational quality of service (QoS), and the third PDP context has an interactive quality of service (QoS).

48. The node in claim 42, wherein each of the first, second, and third bearers is established with a quality of service tailored to characteristics of the information being carried over that bearer.

49. The node in claim 42, wherein the first bearer is established with an interactive quality of service, the second bearer is established with a conversational quality of service, and the third bearer is established with a interactive quality of service.

50. The node in claim 42, wherein the session messages are application control Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) messages carrying Session Description Protocol (SDP) information over User Datagram Protocol (UDP), the voice packets are carried by the Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTh) protocol over UDP, and the control messages associated with the voice packets are media control Real-Time Control Protocol (RTCP) messages over UDP.

51. The node in claim 45, wherein the electronic circuitry is further configured to establish the second and third PDP contexts using a single request.

52. The node in claim 42, wherein the session is a multimedia session and the electronic circuitry is further configured to establish an additional bearer for a session media flow other than the voice packets in any order relative to the second and third bearers.

53. The node in claim 42, wherein the second and third bearers may be established in any order relative to each other.

54. A method for establishing a session involving a mobile radio terminal configured to access a packet-based access network via a radio access network comprising:

establishing a first bearer extending between the mobile terminal and the packet-based access network;

using the first bearer to initiate a session that includes a packet-based voice communication and to carry one or more session messages for implementing a packet-based voice service;

establishing a second bearer for the session extending between the mobile terminal and the packet-based access network and carrying voice packets associated with the packet-based voice service; and

using the first bearer to carry control messages associated with the packet-based voice service.

55. The method in claim 54, wherein each of the first and second bearers is established with a quality of service tailored to characteristics of the information being carried over that bearer.

56. The method in claim 54, wherein the first bearer is established with an interactive quality of service and the second bearer is established with a conversational quality of service.

57. The method in claim 54, further comprising:

establishing a priority for the first bearer.

58. The method in claim 54, wherein the first and second bearers correspond to first, second, and third packet data contexts, respectively.

59. The method in claim 54, wherein the first and second bearers are radio access bearers (RABs).

60. The method in claim 59, further comprising:

establishing a first Packet Data Protocol (PDP) context for session messages relating to the packet-based voice service and for control messages associated with the voice packets;

mapping the first PDP context onto the first RAB;

establishing a second PDP context for voice packets; and

mapping the second PDP context onto the second RAB.

61. The method in claim 60, wherein the session messages are Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) messages carrying Session Description Protocol (SDP) information over a User Datagram Protocol (UDP), the voice packets are carried by the Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP) protocol over UDP, and the control messages associated with the voice packets are Real-Time Control Protocol (RTCP) messages over UDP.

62. A node for use a mobile communications system that includes in a packet-based access network, comprising electronic circuitry configured to perform the following tasks related to establishing an IP session:

coordinate with a mobile radio terminal to establish a first bearer extending between the mobile radio terminal and the packet-based access network configured to establish the IP session including a conversational IP service and to carry one or more session messages for implementing the conversational IP service;

coordinate with the mobile radio terminal to establish a second bearer for the IP multimedia session extending between the mobile radio terminal and the packet-based access network to carry voice packets associated with the conversational IP service; and

coordinate with the packet-based access network node to configure the first bearer to carry control messages associated with the conversational IP service.

63. The node in claim 62, wherein the bearers are packet data contexts.

64. The node in claim 62, wherein the bearers are radio access bearers (RABs).

65. The node in claim 64, wherein the node is a Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN) in a General Packet Radio Services (GPRS) network, and wherein the SGSN electronic circuitry is configured to:

map a first PDP context onto the first RAB;

map a second PDP context onto the second RAB; and

map a third PDP context onto the first RAB.

66. The node in claim 62, wherein the node is a mobile radio terminal or a fixed network node.

67. The node in claim 62, wherein the first bearer is established with an interactive quality of service and the second bearer is established with a conversational quality of service.

68. The node in claim 62, wherein the session messages are application control Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) messages carrying Session Description Protocol (SDP) information over User Datagram Protocol (UDP), the voice packets are carried by the Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP) protocol over UDP, and the control messages associated with the voice packets are media control Real-Time Control Protocol (RTCP) messages over UDP.

69. The node in claim 62, wherein the session is a multimedia session and the electronic circuitry is further configured to establish an additional bearer for a session media flow other than the voice packets.
