Neurotherapeutically pharmaceutical effective compositions are prepared using carboxypeptidase E inhibitors. One class of carboxypeptidase E inhibitors found to exhibit significant neurotropic activity are β-lactam compounds, particularly penam and cephem β-lactam antibiotics and non-antibiotic derivatives thereof.
