Abstract

A system and method for routing information includes a resource manager. The resource manager includes a configuration table. The configuration table includes at least one group of physical gateway addresses, each of the at least one group of physical gateway addresses has a single and unique logical identifier. The resource manager is coupled to a plurality of gateways. A proxy coupled to the resource manager. The resource manager receives a register request message from a selected one of the plurality of gateways.

Claims

1. A system for routing information comprising:

a resource manager, the resource manager including a configuration table, the configuration table including at least one group of physical gateway addresses, each of the at least one group of physical gateway addresses having a single and unique logical identifier, the resource manager being coupled to a plurality of gateways;

a proxy coupled to the resource manager;

wherein the resource manager receives a register request message from a selected one of the plurality of gateways, the register request message including a physical address of a selected one of the plurality of gateways, the resource manager responsively determining the logical identifier of the selected one of the plurality of gateways using the physical address, the resource manager sending a register request message including the logical identifier to the proxy; and

wherein subsequent register request messages received from any of the plurality of gateways having the same logical identifier as the selected one of the plurality of gateways are not forwarded to the proxy by the resource manager.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the resource manager receives an INVITE message from the proxy, the INVITE message include a logical address, the proxy determining a physical address of the gateway.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein each logical gateway includes more than one physical gateway.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the plurality of gateways are coupled to the PSTN.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein the proxy is coupled to the Internet.

6. A method for routing information comprising:

establishing a configuration table, the configuration table including at least one group of physical gateway addresses, each of the at least one group of physical gateway addresses having a single and unique logical identifier;

receiving a register request message from a selected one of the plurality of gateways, the register request message including a physical address of a selected one of the plurality of gateways;

responsively determining the logical identifier of the selected one of the plurality of gateways using the physical address

sending a register request message including the logical identifier to a proxy; and

receiving from any of the plurality of gateways having the same logical identifier as the selected one of the plurality of gateways; and

withholding the register request message received from any of the plurality of gateways having the same logical address to the proxy.

7. The method of claim 6 further comprising receiving an INVITE message from the proxy, the INVITE message include a logical address, the proxy determining a physical address of the gateway.

8. The method of claim 6 wherein each logical gateway includes more than one physical gateway.

9. The method of claim 6 further comprising communicating with the PSTN.

10. The method of claim 6 further comprising communicating with the Internet.

16. The method of claim 6 further comprising receiving an INVITE message from the proxy, the INVITE message include a logical address, the proxy determining a physical address of the gateway.

17. The method of claim 6 wherein each logical gateway includes more than one physical gateway.

18. The method of claim 6 further comprising communicating with the PSTN.

11. A system for routing information comprising:

a resource manager including a configuration table, the configuration table including at least one group of physical SIP gateway addresses, each of the at least one group of physical SIP gateway addresses having a single and unique logical identifier; and

a proxy coupled to the resource manager.

12. The system of claim 11 wherein the resource manager receives a register request message from a selected one of the plurality of gateways, the register request message including a physical address of a selected one of the plurality of gateways, the resource manager responsively determining the logical identifier of the selected one of the plurality of gateways using the physical address, the resource manager sending a register request message including the logical identifier to the proxy;

and

wherein subsequent register request messages received from any of the plurality of gateways having the same logical identifier as the selected one of the plurality of gateways are not forwarded to the proxy by the resource manager.

13. A method for routing information comprising:

establishing a configuration table, the configuration table including at least one group of physical gateway addresses, each of the at least one group of physical gateway addresses having a single and unique logical identifier;

receiving a register request message from a selected one of the plurality of gateways, the register request message including a physical address of a selected one of the plurality of gateways; and

responsively determining the logical identifier of the selected one of the plurality of gateways using the physical address.

14. The method of claim 13 further comprising:

sending a register request message including the logical identifier to a proxy; and

receiving from any of the plurality of gateways having the same logical identifier as the selected one of the plurality of gateways; and

withholding the register request message received from any of the plurality of gateways having the same logical address to the proxy.

20. The method of claim 13 further comprising:

sending a register request message including the logical identifier to a proxy; and

receiving from any of the plurality of gateways having the same logical identifier as the selected one of the plurality of gateways; and

withholding the register request message received from any of the plurality of gateways having the same logical address to the proxy.

15. A method for routing information comprising:

establishing a configuration table, the configuration table including at least one group of physical gateway addresses, each of the at least one group of physical gateway addresses having a single and unique logical identifier;

receiving a register request message from a selected one of the plurality of gateways, the register request message including a physical address of a selected one of the plurality of gateways;

responsively determining the logical identifier of the selected one of the plurality of gateways using the physical address

sending a register request message including the logical identifier to a proxy; and

receiving from any of the plurality of gateways having the same logical identifier as the selected one of the plurality of gateways; and

withholding the register request message received from any of the plurality of gateways having the same logical address to the proxy.

19. A method for routing information comprising:

establishing a configuration table, the configuration table including at least one group of physical gateway addresses, each of the at least one group of physical gateway addresses having a single and unique logical identifier;

receiving a register request message from a selected one of the plurality of gateways, the register request message including a physical address of a selected one of the plurality of gateways; and

responsively determining the logical identifier of the selected one of the plurality of gateways using the physical address.

21. A system for routing information comprising:

means for establishing a configuration table, the configuration table including at least one group of physical gateway addresses, each of the at least one group of physical gateway addresses having a single and unique logical identifier;

means for receiving a register request message from a selected one of the plurality of gateways, the register request message including a physical address of a selected one of the plurality of gateways;

means for responsively determining the logical identifier of the selected one of the plurality of gateways using the physical address;

means for sending a register request message including the logical identifier to a proxy;

means for receiving from any of the plurality of gateways having the same logical identifier as the selected one of the plurality of gateways; and

means for withholding the register request message received from any of the plurality of gateways having the same logical address to the proxy.

22. The system of claim 21 further comprising means for receiving an INVITE message from the proxy, the INVITE message include a logical address, the proxy determining a physical address of the gateway.

23. The system of claim 21 wherein each logical gateway includes more than one physical gateway.

24. The system of claim 21 further comprising means for communicating with the PSTN.

25. A computer readable medium having stored therein instructions for causing a processing unit to execute the following method:

establishing a configuration table, the configuration table including at least one group of physical gateway addresses, each of the at least one group of physical gateway addresses having a single and unique logical identifier;

receiving a register request message from a selected one of the plurality of gateways, the register request message including a physical address of a selected one of the plurality of gateways; and

responsively determining the logical identifier of the selected one of the plurality of gateways using the physical address.

26. A computer readable medium having stored therein instructions for causing a processing unit to execute the following method:

establishing a configuration table, the configuration table including at least one group of physical gateway addresses, each of the at least one group of physical gateway addresses having a single and unique logical identifier;

receiving a register request message from a selected one of the plurality of gateways, the register request message including a physical address of a selected one of the plurality of gateways;

responsively determining the logical identifier of the selected one of the plurality of gateways using the physical address;

sending a register request message including the logical identifier to a proxy; and

receiving from any of the plurality of gateways having the same logical identifier as the selected one of the plurality of gateways; and

withholding the register request message received from any of the plurality of gateways having the same logical address to the proxy.

27. A system for routing information comprising:

means for establishing a configuration table, the configuration table including at least one group of physical gateway addresses, each of the at least one group of physical gateway addresses having a single and unique logical identifier;

means for receiving a register request message from a selected one of the plurality of gateways, the register request message including a physical address of a selected one of the plurality of gateways; and

means for responsively determining the logical identifier of the selected one of the plurality of gateways using the physical address.

28. The system of claim 27 further comprising:

means for sending a register request message including the logical identifier to a proxy; and

means for receiving from any of the plurality of gateways having the same logical identifier as the selected one of the plurality of gateways; and

means for withholding the register request message received from any of the plurality of gateways having the same logical address to the proxy.
