Abstract

A reflective display having a plurality of approximately hemispherical high refractive index (η₁) transparent hemi-beads substantially covering and protruding inwardly from a transparent sheet'"'"'s inward surface. The transparent sheet, which has an outward viewing surface, has a refractive index (η₂) which can be low (i.e. η₁≈1.92 and η₂≈1.59). A member is selectably moved into an intense evanescent wave region at the hemi-beads'"'"' inward side to selectably frustrate substantial total internal reflection of light rays. The member can be a plurality of light scattering particles suspended in a low refractive index (η₃≈1.27) electrophoresis medium and electrophoretically moved into or out of the intense evanescent wave region.

Claims

1. A reflective display, comprising:

(a) a plurality of approximately hemispherical transparent hemi- beads having a refractive index η

₁ substantially covering and protruding inwardly from an inward surface of a transparent sheet having a refractive index η

₂, said transparent sheet having an outward viewing surface; and

,

(b) means for selectably moving a member into an intense evanescent wave region at an inward side of said hemi-beads to selectably frustrate substantial total internal reflection of light rays at said inward side of said hemi-beads.

2. A display as defined in claim 1, wherein a first surface normal at substantially any selected point on substantially any selected one of said hemi-beads differs in direction by an angle ε

from a second surface normal at a notional point on a notional perfect hemisphere superimposed on said selected one of said hemi-beads, said notional perfect hemisphere and said selected one of said hemi-beads having a substantially equal size, said notional point being the point on said notional perfect hemisphere which is closest to said selected point, and wherein ε

is less than a predefined value.

3. A display as defined in claim 1, wherein said hemi-beads are approximately hemispherical portions of approximately spherical members partially embedded in said transparent sheet.

4. A display as defmed in claim 2, wherein said hemi-beads are approximately hemispherical portions of approximately spherical members partially embedded in said transparent sheet.

5. A display as defined in claim 1, wherein said hemi-beads are approximately hemispherical members affixed to said inward surface of said transparent sheet.

6. A display as defined in claim 2, wherein said hemi-beads are approximately hemispherical members affixed to said inward surface of said transparent sheet.

9. A display as defined in any one of claims 1-8, wherein said transparent sheet further comprises a nano-composite structure of high refractive index particles suspended in a polymer.

10. A display as defined in any one of claims 1-8, wherein said hemi-beads are shaped to minimize gaps between outwardmost portions of adjacent ones of said hemi-beads.

11. A display as defined in any one of claims 1-8, wherein:

(i) said transparent sheet further comprises a nano-composite structure of high refractive index particles suspended in a polymer; and

,

(ii) said hemi-beads are shaped to minimize gaps between outwardmost portions of adjacent ones of said hemi-beads.

12. A display as defined in any one of claims 1-8, wherein:

(a) outwardmost regions of said hemi-beads are substantially hexagonal;

(b) inwardmost regions of said hemi-beads are approximately spherical;

(c) first intermediate regions of said hemi-beads close to said outwardmost region are more approximately hexagonal than second intermediate regions of said hemi-beads which are farther from said outwardmost region than said first intermediate regions; and

,

(d) third intermediate regions of said hemi-beads close to said inwardmost region are more approximately spherical than fourth intermediate regions of said hemi-beads which are farther from said inwardmost region than said third intermediate regions.

13. A display as defined in any one of claims 1-8, wherein:

(a) said transparent sheet further comprises a nano-composite structure of high refractive index particles suspended in a polymer;

(b) outwardmost regions of said hemi-beads are substantially hexagonal;

(c) inwardmost regions of said hemi-beads are approximately spherical;

(d) first intermediate regions of said hemi-beads close to said outwardmost region are more approximately hexagonal than second intermediate regions of said hemi-beads which are farther from said outwardmost region than said first intermediate regions; and

,

(e) third intermediate regions of said hemi-beads close to said inwardmost region are more approximately spherical than fourth intermediate regions of said hemi-beads which are farther from said inwardmost region than said third intermediate regions.

14. A display as defined in claim 1, further comprising:

(a) a second sheet spaced inwardly from said transparent sheet to define a reservoir between said transparent sheet and said second sheet;

(b) an electrophoresis medium within said reservoir, said medium having a refractive index η

₃;

(c) a first electrode on said inward side of said hemi-beads;

(d) a second electrode on an outward side of said second sheet;

wherein;

(i) said means for selectably moving said member further comprises a voltage source coupled between said electrodes to apply a voltage across said medium to selectably, electrophoretically move said member into or out of said intense evanescent wave region; and

,

(ii) η

₃ is sufficiently smaller than η

₁ and η

₂ that a substantial fraction of light rays passing through said transparent sheet and said hemi-beads are totally internally reflected at said inward side of said hemi-beads in the absence of said applied voltage.

15. A display as defined in claim 14, said member further comprising a plurality of light absorptive particles suspended in said medium.

16. A display as defined in claim 14, wherein said medium is a perfluorinated hydrocarbon liquid.

17. A display as defined in claim 14, wherein a first surface normal at substantially any selected point on substantially any selected one of said hemi-beads differs in direction by an angle ε

from a second surface normal at a notional point on a notional perfect hemisphere superimposed on said selected one of said hemi-beads, said notional perfect hemisphere and said selected one of said hemi-beads having a substantially equal size, said notional point being the point on said notional perfect hemisphere which is closest to said selected point, and wherein ε

is less than a predefined value.

18. A display as defined in claim 14, wherein said hemi-beads are approximately hemispherical portions of approximately spherical members partially embedded in said transparent sheet.

19. A display as defined in claim 14, wherein said hemi-beads are approximately hemispherical members affixed to said inward surface of said transparent sheet.

24. A display as defined in any one of claims 14-19, wherein:

(i) said transparent sheet further comprises a nano-composite structure of high refractive index particles suspended in a polymer; and

,

(ii) said hemi-beads are shaped to minimize gaps between outwardmost portions of adjacent ones of said hemi-beads.

25. A display as defined in claim 1, said member further comprising an elastomer controllably positionable between a first position in which said elastomer is within said intense evanescent wave region and a second position in which said elastomer is not within said intense evanescent wave region.

26. A display as defined in claim 1, said member further comprising an elastomer controllably deformable between a first position in which said elastomer is within said intense evanescent wave region and a second position in which said elastomer is not within said intense evanescent wave region.

27. A reflective display, comprising:

(a) a first transparent sheet having;

(i) an inwardly protruding structure on an inward side of said first sheet, said structure having a refractive index greater than about 1.75;

(ii) an outward viewing surface;

(iii) an intense evanescent wave region at an inward side of said structure;

(b) a second sheet spaced inwardly from said first sheet to define a reservoir between said first and second sheets;

(c) an electrophoresis medium within said reservoir, said medium having a refractive index less than about 1.35;

(d) a member within said medium;

(e) a first electrode on said inward side of said structure;

(f) a second electrode on an outward side of said second sheet; and

,

(i) a voltage source coupled between said electrodes to apply a voltage across said medium to selectably, electrophoretically move said member into or out of said intense evanescent wave region.

28. A display as defined in claim 27, said first sheet further comprising a nano-composite structure of high refractive index particles suspended in a polymer.

29. A display as defined in claim 27, said member further comprising a plurality of light absorptive particles suspended in said medium.

30. A display as defined in claim 27, wherein said medium is a perfluorinated hydrocarbon liquid.

31. A method of making a reflective display, said method comprising:

(a) partially embedding a plurality of approximately spherical high refractive index beads in one side of an elastomeric substrate;

(b) removing portions of said beads which are not embedded in said substrate to produce a plurality of approximately hemispherical high refractive index hemi-beads embedded in said substrate, said hemi-beads having substantially flat, substantially coplanar faces;

(c) transparently adhering said hemi-bead coplanar faces to a transparent substrate; and

,

(d) removing said elastomeric substrate.

A method as defined in claim 31, wherein said partially embedding further comprises distributing said plurality of approximately spherical beads over said side of said elastomeric substrate and applying a predetermined uniform pressure to said approximately spherical beads to embed approximately one-half of substantially each one of said approximately spherical beads in said side of said elastomeric substrate.

33. A method as defined in claim 31, wherein said removing portions of said beads further comprises abrading said portions of said beads which are not embedded in said substrate by reciprocation against a flat optical polishing surface.

34. A method as defined in claim 31, wherein said adhering further comprises transparent adhesive bonding.

35. A method as defined in claim 31, wherein said adhering further comprises transparent adhesive bonding with a transparent spin-coated ultra-violet cured epoxy.

36. A method as defined in claim 31, wherein said removing said elastomeric substrate further comprises peeling said elastomeric substrate away from said hemi-beads.

37. A method as defined in claim 31, wherein said removing said elastomeric substrate further comprises dissolving said elastomeric substrate in a solvent.

38. An image display method, comprising:

(a) forming an approximately hemispherical transparent hemi-bead having a refractive index η

₁; and

,

(b) selectably moving a member into an intense evanescent wave region at an inwardly convex side of said hemi-bead to selectably frustrate substantial total internal reflection of light rays at said inwardly convex side of said hemi-bead.

39. An image display method as defined in claim 38, wherein said forming further comprises reducing below a predefined value an angle ε

between;

(i) a first surface normal at substantially any selected point on said hemi-bead;

(ii) a second surface normal at a notional point on a notional perfect hemisphere superimposed on said hemi-bead;

said notional perfect hemisphere and said hemi-bead having a substantially equal size, said notional point being the point on said notional perfect hemisphere which is closest to said selected point.

40. An image display method as defined in claim 38, wherein said forming further comprises embedding an approximately hemispherical portion of an approximately spherical member in a transparent sheet.

41. An image display method as defined in claim 38, further comprising applying an outward side of said hemi-bead to an inward surface of a transparent sheet having a refractive index η

43. An image display method as defined in claim 40, further comprising forming said transparent sheet as a nano-composite structure of high refractive index particles suspended in a polymer.

44. An image display method as defined in claim 38, further comprising forming a substantially coplanar plurality of said hemi-beads and minimizing gaps between outwardmost portions of adjacent ones of said hemi-beads.

45. An image display method as defined in claim 38, further comprising:

(a) forming outwardmost regions of said hemi-beads in a substantially hexagonal shape;

(b) forming inwardmost regions of said hemi-beads in an approximately spherical shape;

(c) forming first intermediate regions of said hemi-beads close to said outwardmost region in a more approximately hexagonal shape than second intermediate regions of said hemi-beads which are farther from said outwardmost region than said first intermediate regions; and

,

(d) forming third intermediate regions of said hemi-beads close to said inwardmost region in a more approximately spherical shape than fourth intermediate regions of said hemi-beads which are farther from said inwardmost region than said third intermediate regions.

46. An image display method as defined in claim 44, further comprising:

(a) spacing a sheet inwardly from said hemi-beads to define a reservoir between said hemi-beads and said sheet;

(b) providing an electrophoresis medium within said reservoir, said medium having a refractive index η

₃;

(c) providing said member within said medium;

wherein;

(i) said selectably moving further comprises applying a voltage across said medium to selectably, electrophoretically move said member into or out of said intense evanescent wave region; and

,

(ii) η

₃ is sufficiently smaller than η

₁ and η

₂ that most light rays passing through said hemi-beads are totally internally reflected at said inwardly convex side of said hemi-beads in the absence of said applied voltage.

47. An image display method as defined in claim 46, further comprising:

(a) forming a first electrode on said inwardly convex side of said hemi-beads;

(b) forming a second electrode on an outward side of said sheet; and

,

(c) applying said voltage between said electrodes.

48. An image display method as defined in claim 46, further comprising providing said member as a plurality of light absorptive particles suspended in said medium.

49. An image display method as defined in claim 46, further comprising providing said medium as a perfluorinated hydrocarbon liquid.
