Abstract

A method and system for creating a new digital work from one or more existing digital works having parts. A first part of a digital work has first usage rights associated therewith, the first usage rights specifying a particular manner of use for the first part. A second part of a digital work has second usage rights associated therewith, the second usage rights specifying a particular manner of use for the second part. A new digital work is created by combining the first part and the second part as new content and associating new usage rights with the new content. The new usage rights specify a particular manner of use for the new digital work.

Claims

1. A method for creating a new digital work from one or more existing digital works having parts, said method comprising:

indicating a first part of a digital work, the first part having first usage rights associated therewith, the first usage rights specifying a particular manner of use for the first part;

indicating a second part of a digital work, the second part having second usage rights associated therewith, the second usage rights specifying a particular manner of use for the second part;

creating a new digital work by combining the first part and the second part as new content and associating new usage rights with the new content, wherein the new usage rights specify a particular manner of use for the new digital work.

2. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein said step of indicating a first part comprises transmitting a request to copy the first part and wherein said step of indicating a second part comprises transmitting a request to copy the second part.

3. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the first part and the second part are parts of the same digital work.

4. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the first part and the second part are parts of different digital works.

5. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein said creating step comprises using a first set of next usage rights associated with the first part and a second set of next usage rights associated with the second part to obtain the new usage rights.

6. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein said creating step comprises using the first usage rights associated with the first part and using the second set of usage rights associated with the second part to obtain the new usage rights.

7. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein said creating step comprises extracting the first part from the digital work.

8. The method as recited in claim 2, wherein the first part, the second part, and the new digital work are each stored in a repository.

9. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the usage rights are constructed with a usage rights language.

10. The method as recited in claim 8, wherein said requesting steps comprise transactions between the repositories.

11. The method as recited in claim 10, wherein said requesting steps comprise an extract transaction.

12. The method as recited in claim 10, wherein said creating step comprises an embed transaction.

13. The method as recited in claim 1, further comprising accomplishing financial transactions relating to the indicating steps and the creating step.

14. The method as recited in claim 13, wherein said accomplishing step comprises accomplishing the financial transactions with at least one of a credit server and clearinghouse.

15. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the first part comprises sub parts having usage rights associated therewith.

16. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the first part comprises a security authorization part.

17. The method as recited in claim 8, further comprising the step of enforcing security of communications between the repositories.

18. The method as recited in claim 8, wherein said enforcing step comprises passing identification certificates between the repositories.

19. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein said usage rights are created using a grammar to express information relating to at least one of conditions, rights, and parameters.

20. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the new digital work comprises educational material.

21. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the new digital work comprises research material.

22. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the manner of use specified by the first usage rights is reuse of at least a portion of the first part.

23. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the first usage rights are stored on the same device as the first part.

24. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the first usage rights are stored on a different device than the first part.

25. The method as recited in claim 10, wherein the transactions comprise session initiation transactions.

26. The method as recited in claim 10, wherein the transactions comprise billing transactions.

27. The method as recited in claim 1, further comprising accomplishing a billing transaction based on use of the first part.

28. The method as recited in claim 1, further comprising distributing the new digital work.

29. The method as recited in claim 1, further comprising accessing the new digital work.

30. The method as recited in claim 1, further comprising editing the parts prior to said creating step.

31. The method as recited in claim 29, wherein said accessing step comprises rendering the new digital work.

32. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the new content comprises music.

33. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the new content comprises video.

34. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the new content comprises audio.

35. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the new content comprises a computer program.

36. A system for creating a new digital work from one or more existing digital works having parts, said system comprising:

first means for indicating a first part of a digital work, the first part having first usage rights associated therewith, the first usage rights specifying a particular manner of use for the first part;

second means for indicating a second part of a digital work, the second part having second usage rights associated therewith, the second usage rights specifying a particular manner of use for the second part;

means for creating a new digital work by combining the first part and the second part as new content and associating new usage rights with the new content, wherein the new usage rights specify a particular manner of use for the new digital work.

37. The system as recited in claim 36, wherein said first means for indicating comprises means for transmitting a request to copy the first part and wherein said second means for indicating comprises means for transmitting a request to copy the second part.

38. The system as recited in claim 36, wherein the first part and the second part are parts of the same digital work.

39. The system as recited in claim 36, wherein the first part and the second part are parts of different digital works.

40. The system as recited in claim 36, wherein said means for creating comprises means for using a first set of next usage rights associated with the first part and a second set of next usage rights associated with the second part to obtain the new usage rights.

41. The system as recited in claim 36, wherein said means for creating comprises means for using the first usage rights associated with the first part and using the second set of usage rights associated with the second part to obtain the new usage rights.

42. The system as recited in claim 36, wherein said means for creating comprises means for extracting the first part from the digital work.

43. The system as recited in claim 37, wherein the first part, the second part, and the new digital work are each stored in a repository.

44. The system as recited in claim 36, wherein the usage rights are constructed with a usage rights language.

45. The system as recited in claim 43, wherein said means for transmitting request comprise means for requesting transactions between the repositories.

46. The system as recited in claim 45, wherein said means for requesting comprise means for requesting an extract transaction.

47. The system as recited in claim 45, wherein said means for creating comprises means for accomplishing an embed transaction.

48. The system as recited in claim 36, further comprising means for accomplishing financial transactions relating to the operation of the means for indicating and the means for creating.

49. The system as recited in claim 48, wherein said means for accomplishing comprises means for accomplishing the financial transactions with at least one of a credit server and clearinghouse.

50. The system as recited in claim 36, wherein the first part comprises sub parts having usage rights associated therewith.

51. The system as recited in claim 36, wherein the first part comprises a security authorization part.

52. The system as recited in claim 43, further comprising means for enforcing security of communications between the repositories.
