Abstract

A method of achieving tissue changes in bone or bone-derived organic tissue, in which method bone or bone-derived organic tissue is provided, an interfacing agent is applied to the bone or bone-derived organic tissue, and electromagnetic energy is applied to the interfacing agent. The interfacing agent can include collagen, preferably bone-derived collagen, and a therapeutic agent. In a related embodiment, a method of treating bone tissue is provided wherein a bioactive interfacing agent is placed between the bone segments of the bone tissue to be treated.

Claims

1. A method of achieving tissue changes in bone or bone-derived organic tissue comprising the steps of providing bone or bone-derived organic tissue and applying electromagnetic energy to the bone or bone-derived organic tissue.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the applying step comprises applying radio-frequency energy.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the providing step comprises providing bone or bone-derived organic tissue in an electrically conductive medium.

4. A method of achieving tissue changes in bone or bone-derived organic tissue comprising the steps of:

providing bone or bone-derived organic tissue;

applying an interfacing agent to the bone or bone-derived organic tissue; and

applying electromagnetic energy to the interfacing agent.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the applying step comprises applying radio frequency energy.

6. The method of claim 4 wherein the providing step comprises providing bone or bone-derived organic tissue in an electrically conductive medium.

7. The method of claim 4 wherein the interfacing agent comprises collagen and a therapeutic agent.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the collagen is bone-derived collagen.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the source of bone-derived collagen is acid treated bone-derived graft material.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the acid treated bone-derived graft material is derived from autologous bone of the patient to be treated.

11. The method of claim 7, wherein the collagen is made by synthetic or recombinant means.

12. The method of claim 7, wherein the therapeutic agent comprises hydroxyapetite.

13. The method of claim 7, wherein the therapeutic agent comprises an osteogenic protein.

14. The method of claim 7, wherein the therapeutic agent comprises a growth factor.

15. A method of treating bone tissue comprising the steps of providing bone segments and placing a bioactive interfacing agent between the bone segments.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein the placing step comprises placing a bioactive interfacing agent comprising one or more members from the group consisting of osteoconductive, osteoinductive, and osteogenic substances or agents.

17. The method of claim 15 wherein the placing step comprises placing a bioactive interfacing agent comprising a hydrophobic, lipophilic carrier paste-gel-like material.

18. The method of claim 15 additionally comprising the step of activating the bioactive interfacing agent by electromagnetic energy.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein the activating step comprises activating the bioactive interfacing agent by heat releasing microspheres.

20. The method of claim 18 wherein the activating step comprises activating the bioactive interfacing agent by radio frequency energy.
